Ready for a new cornerback controversy: Do the Saints need Nnamdi Asomugha ((pronounced /NAM-Dee Aso-MU-Wah/)??

Forget Champ Bailey.  Too old.

Forget DeAngelo Hall.  Washed up.

Forget Lito Sheppard.  Too old and going to Dallas, according to Peter King.

Nnamdi Asomugha is the man.  I'd never heard of him until I read Saintsational's fanshot.

Oct 12, Saints quarterback Drew Brees completed 26 of 30 passes for 320 yards, but only one of those throws went toward Asomugha.  Asomugha had 8 picks in 2006.  He had 1 in 2007.  BECAUSE NOBODY DARED TO THROW TO HIS SIDE OF THE FIELD!!

4. I think the trading deadline day will be quiet, judging by the GMs I spoke with over the weekend. "There's no buzz out there,'' one told me Sunday. "There's a bunch of trades that should happen but won't.'' Like what? "The Raiders should trade [cornerback] Nnamdi Asomugha. What's Al Davis going to do with him again next year when they can't reach a contract deal? Franchise him again? Corners are so valuable, and he's a good one. He ought to see what he can get for him.''

I don't know that the Saints can trade for him now since the Shockey deal took all the picks.  But jeez, is $10 or 12 million for 1 year for a top notch corner too much to pay for a Superbowl?  We need to start a letter writing campaign to PayLoo.  Wait, do the Raiders play Cover 2?  Oh hell, never mind.

(Raiders Defensive Coordinator Rob) Ryan plans to blitz selectively. He said his defensive scheme is about winning individual matchups. In that way it is similar to a Tony Dungy-style defense, the famed Tampa 2.
Asomugha will be back next season because the Raiders will either franchise him again or agree to a long-term deal.

Asomugha likes playing for the Raiders, being that he is from Southern California and played college football at Cal. But he also wants to win.

I’m sure if the Raiders don’t show signs of improvement, he’d be open to looking elsewhere for a chance to win. But that won’t happen until 2010.

wonder how that would go?

Forcing Spagnuolo or Schwartz on Payton? I doubt that they are acquainted. Reminds me of Ditka and Buddy Ryan, sort of. Hated each other, did not speak. But they won a superbowl so who cares??

Hill earned the starting job for the 2009 season by beating out Alex Smith, who missed last season after re-injuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. Head coach Mike Singletary largely chose Hill based on his play down the stretch last year: he went 5-3 over the final eight games and he also owns a 5-0 record at home in Candlestick Park.
