Defensive Coordinator
Well guys I was very hurt after the Carolina game and didn’t watch football any more this past weekend, but I want to still be very optimistic about this season. I still think we have a chance. Look at a few facts that we all should agree. (Not going to get into numbers, that’s for stujo4 to do)
1. IT'S STILL BREEZY IN THE BIG EASY!!! No matter what’s been said about Brees this week or how that the "BLUEPRINT" to stop our off is to follow what Carolina did - it aint gonna happen! Brees will correct that and he'll be fine. Our off can still and will run with the best of 'em.....
2. BANGED UP!!! I cant remember one game this year where we have been 100% (all our players) and when they do come back it seems like the chemistry is just not there. Seems that Quiet Storm (12) and J Shock (88) just couldn’t get in a sink with #9....
3.26!!!! No matter if SP wants to run 26 or not, he has no choice now. Him and his “GET REGGIE THE BALL ATITUDE” is dead for 3-4 weeks……
4. DEF HAS IMPROVED!!!! We have got a solid front 7, a good rotation, and not to mention a stub MLB!! Yes we could use a little betta pass rush at times, but we ARE going to put it together!!!! Madd Max and Harper are playing well. Poor Porter was improving. I hate that for him. Hell I hate that for us!! Gay is so playing ok but yea he does need to pick it up a bit and YES J. David does has an INT this year and if giving the chance, I think he will make more plays. He needs to just realize where his help is coming from and when. Some times seems as he gets caught looking in the backfield and that’s when he gets torched. Even being a good part of special teams. Get free safety in the draft. We are there!!!!! I really think the pieces are there....
Maybe, just maybe, we are looking over the defensive coordinator. Maybe we are giving him to much slack. Yea we are all over Payton and his playing calling, cutting and signing and cutting and signing of players, but maybe he being conservative because of the def coor and his lack of ability to get it right. The ’06 season he was running and gunning! Maybe he’s really trying to make this work. The way its looking Marvin Lewis will be outta a job this year and he was the def coor for that lights out Raven's team that won the super bowl. I’m not sure about any others that maybe available but the Saints need to check on that……..

Top Choices
I, for one, haven’t been taking it easy on Gibbs. Coaching is the most overlooked factor in the NFL and I think scheme is the main reason our D has stunk.
Here are my top choices in no particular order:
- Ron Rivera, ex-bears DC – by all accounts he is kind of an asshole, but that may be what we need right now
- Marvin Lewis – Oh, he’ll be available. Some of the bloom may be off that rose after the disastrous Bengals D the last few years, but he may just be above his pay grade
- Mike Nolan – another former Baltimore DC who had a rough time as a HC
- Jim Johnson disciple to be named- The Philly DC is great, always aggressive and his defense always play well and create havoc. Steve Spagnuolo, the current Gaints DC is a disciple of Johnson and look how well he’s done. Sean McDermott is their current secondary coach and seems like the best bet to move up. Would be a cheaper and probably less threatening hire to Payton.

Ron Rivera is the current linebackers coach on the Chargers
and he’s all ours! You don’t have to suffer Ted Cotrell!
Fire Ted Cottrell! Promote Ron Rivera!

When did you play?
If the ’Horns run the table of these next 4 or so games, they need to just stop the season and give them the trophy…

Marvin Lewis
Been saying this pretty much since Day 1 on this blog. SaintBevo is right about the possibility of a former head coach being threatening to Payton, and the McDermott suggestion is fascinating. One thing is virtually certain, though: Gibbs needs to elevate the defense in the second half of the season, or he needs to go.

this is how you do it, Sean Payton
rotoworld.com:
Chargers announced that Ted Cottrell has been relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator and will be replaced by linebackers coach Ron Rivera.
Rivera, who was previously defensive coordinator for the Bears, will take over play-calling for a unit that has allowed 25 points per game after giving up just 18 per game last season. Once again, Contrell is dogged by criticism that he’s not aggressive enough. They have had zero pass rush this year, which has exposed their secondary.

yeah that's great but....
we don’t have Ron Rivera as our LB coach. It’d be cool if we did

Switch kicker to DC
Hey, how about this- instead of cutting the next kicker or punter , just make them defensive coordinator? They must be able to see how our defense needs some additional complexity- just sitting there on the sidelines so much of the game. Let them do it. It just totally baffles me how we have like 2 defenses and every opposing QB knows that all they have to do when they come to the line is pick A or B, not try to figure out what they are looking at.
