Q & A with Bolts from the Blue

Below is a Fan Post from DaBolts, SB Nation's Chargers blogger. This is open for any and all of you to ask him questions about the Chargers and this weeks upcoming matchup. I think this is one of the coolest aspects of CSC and SB Nation as a whole, so I deifinitely encourage you guys to utilize this feature. Be sure to check out my FanPost on Bolts from the Blue and help me answer questions from Chargers fans.  And be sure to rec this post!

I do the blogging at Bolts from the Blue, the Chargers SBN site.  I thought I would go over a little on the state of the Chargers and and try and answer any questions you folks might have.  Most folks are curious about LT and his lack of production this year.  There are two groups of thought, one is that all the yards and hits have finally caught up with him and he is in rapid decline, not unlike Shaun Alexander.  Watching him week to week I think that isn't the case, to me he seems hampered by the toe injury which seems to be getting better very slowly; time will tell.  The other issue is that the San Diego offensive line has not opened holes for him the way it has in the past.  This is likely the result of both Hardwick and McNeil being out for the first 3-4 games with injuries.

The other thing that has not gone well this season is the secondary.  Ted Cottrell, our defensive coordinator, has a strong tendency to be conservative and goes with soft zone coverage.  With Merriman out we are seeing much less pressure on the quarterback; and even a mediocre passing attack can just chew up yards on this unit.  We are lucky to have Jyles Tucker coming back this weekend, along with Philips, these two outside linebackers usually do better at bringing heat on the QB.  San Diego also seems to have real trouble covering the Tight Ends, they have been ripping us for big gains.  This team has been very inconsistent; bringing good defense one week, but totally breaking down the next; I'm anticipating a great game on Sunday with a lot of scoring.  The brightest spot this season has been the continued development of Rivers at quarterback; despite turning the ball over three times last week he has had a very good year and the offense is mostly clicking along despite injuries to LT, Gates and Chambers.

This game is going to be like watching ourselves in the mirror

I say the victory goes to whichever team doesn’t wear their ugly uniforms: the Saints’ black pajama look (otherwise known as Viet Cong chic), or the Bolt’s baby blanket jerseys (how can you guys wax nostalgic about the most effeminate uniforms in all of professional sports?). Saints are the home team…anyone hear what they’re wearing?

by MtnExile on Oct 23, 2008 1:53 PM CDT reply actions

The Chargers

will be wearing their standard road whites. Heh, their record in the powder blues is great, they seem to play better in them; I think 4-0 over the last two years. The Chargers wore them two weeks ago when they took down the Pats. They wear them twice a year; I like them because it reminds me of Lance Alworth and the old school bolts.

"the most effeminate uniforms in all of professional sports"

I always thought the old Houston Oiler uniforms were pretty gay.

Saints’ black on black monochrome uniforms were shocking at first, I thought they looked badass. Not so much now. But better than Buffalo’s monochromes, those things are ugly. As are the Cardinals’.

The powder blues

Berman always goes on tangents about the powder blue uniforms.

How is it....

that you have Antonio Cromartie back there, and you guys are stinking it up in the secondar? Is there anyone in particular who gets victimized like Jason David does for us?

by asaint on Oct 23, 2008 3:06 PM CDT reply actions

Our Safety, Clinton Hart

Has probably been the worst offender. The final TD in the last second against the Panthers went through his hands; also a blown assignment against TE Zach Miller at Oakland. Weddle is the Free Safety, but this is his first year starting and there have been some growing pains there; though he has been improved lately. Part of it is that the defensive scheme really requires some pressure on the quarterback and the Chargers miss Merriman badly.

Cromartie has had flashes this year, but even he completely melted down against Denver giving up numerous catches and four personal fouls against Brandon Marshall. Lastly the tackling has been spotty in places, against the Bills several drives that should have been stopped at third down were allowed to continue. It is odd to have three number one draft choices (Cromartie, Jammer and Cason) playing in the secondary and have it be so porous. The tight end coverage is almost non existent. Ultimately we’re a bend don’t break defense; but we just haven’t been getting the pressure or turnovers that we did last year.

You sound like you're talking about the Saints defense

It’s really amazing how similar these two teams are. They seem to have the exact same strengths and weaknesses. What’s the news on LT’s toe? Is it still holding him back this week? I feel for him with that injury. I hope it fully heals soon….only after the Saints game though.

Go Saints!!!!

True

The parallels are striking. LT didn’t practice on Wednesday, so I think it’s safe to say he is about the same. Several times last week he seemed close to breaking one; but I hate to say that the Saints probably have relatively little to fear from the running game this weekend. Sproles can be a threat but also has been battling an ankle sprain; and our rookie, Hester has two carries for three yards with one fumble.

Speaking of Hester

Here at CSC, I probably speak for a few homers, and really like Jacob Hester. Do you know how many fumbles he had his entire career at LSU? I think he really has some promise. He will be a good case to see if just being a good football player is enough to be productive in the league. I saw him blowing it up in some preseason games. What’s your take on him?

by asaint on Oct 24, 2008 6:41 AM CDT up reply actions

In the preseason

He looked great in spots, but average in others. Actually when he fumbled they ran the story of how he fumbled his second run at LSU and then never fumbled again. He has made some big tackles on special teams, you have to like his fire; I’d really like to see them give him some more carries. I don’t have a good take on Hester yet.

A question about Brees

When San Diego drafted Rivers, it was because Brees had looked like a disappointment up until that time. He responded with a Pro Bowl year, and began his climb into greatness. My question is: what was the dominant fan sentiment at the time of the draft of 2004, and how did it change between then and Brees’ injury and free agency?

by MtnExile on Oct 23, 2008 4:35 PM CDT reply actions

Everyone wanted

Rivers to start that first year, fans had given up on Brees; he looked to be too short and not progressing. Brees comeback that year with the blindfold practicing and all is one of the great stories of San Diego sports. When the team started winning regularly Brees was the man; everyone loved him. Fans didn’t want him to go; and for a bit it looked like AJ might keep him. There was a looming problem with paying him and Rivers; fans wanted to keep Brees. AJ made an offer he must have known would be refused, I think it was just too much risk for him with the injury. Fans were unhappy Brees was let go; and I don’t know anyone that doesn’t like seeing him excel on the Saints. It sounds like he has some hard feelings towards the Chargers, but fans here still root for him (except this Sunday of course).

I never heard that blindfold story

I’m not by any stretch an AFC West guy, so until Brees became a Saint he was pretty much off my radar. I knew he was good, but that story about the blindfold practicing was new to me.

For any other Saints fan who isn’t familiar with it, I found a good account of the story from the International Herald Tribune.

LT

could be the loss of Lorenzo Neal was a big effect on LT and the Chargers running game. He was one of the best blocking backs ever in his prime, which was back about 3-5 years ago and earlier. LT and the Chargers ground success may have been effected more by Neal getting older and a little more difficult to sacrafice his body and his being traded this year.

Great point

The Chargers found a talented fullback in Mike Tolbert, he catches and runs well; but he has missed a few blocks along the way. Lo’ Neal paved the way for a lot of big runs.

Charger questions

-Do you miss Donnie Edwards, or was he played out?

-Philip Rivers is a fine QB, but tell the truth: Don’t you find him to be annoying?

-Speaking of Rivers, I am convinced that he caused Antonio Gates’ turf toe last year and I can’t get it out of my head. Remember? He soft tossed the ball to him in the backfield and Gates had to go after it, which allowed the defender time to come in and hit him in that awkward position? I’m just sayin’, he’s no Stan Humphries.

-Darren Sproles (Kansas State!) is fast as hell. What do you see his role on the team in the future? He’s too small to be featured back, but what about putting him in on 3rd down along with LT?

by stujo4 on Oct 23, 2008 10:22 PM CDT reply actions

Well

We miss Donnie Edwards, but he was at least close to being played out. No question that Wilhelm is not to be confused with Donnie Edwards; but I believe Edwards production was down for KC. He always seemed like a class act to me; the story was he spent too much time complaining about his contract.

I don’t find Rivers annoying, but I sure understand where other folks might. For most Charger fans watching him go out on two bad knees and play the AFC game was enough. This season he has been letting his play talk, but I liked what Chambers said to Champ Bailey when Champ was telling him how everyone in the league hated Rivers. He said “That’s y’all’s prerogative. But we love him.”

On Gates, that’s the first I’ve heard that Rivers was to blame, I guess you could argue it but QBs underthrow and overthrow targets all the time. Most Chargers fans aren’t too happy with the hit by Brown and Thornton seeing as he was already down. Merriman’s knee, Gates toe and LT’s knee were all from the Titans; can’t say I’m a fan.

Sproles is just too much fun to watch. He has had more carries this year and is LTs primary backup, but is already a little dinged up. You’re right I don’t think he is a feature back at his size. This is his last contract year, the rumor is that the Chargers are going to let him test the waters and he is likely to find a team that will give him more touches than San Diego will. It’s really too bad because when he gets in space he breaks some great runs. I’d love to see him stay and get more plays, but everything I hear says he is likely in his final year.

Absolutely

The best regular season game of the year for the Bolts.
