Most Memorable Saints Games Ever???
Hey Guys,
I'm new to the site but love what I see so far and can't wait to get more involved.
A question for you though- If you were to think back over the past 30 years or so of Saints football, which individual games stick out most in your minds? Things like huge comebacks, miraculous wins, crazy things that happened in the stands, blunder type games (Leon Lett type things)?
Thanks guys!! Just trying to get some insight into what makes the Saints so special to so many of us!!

Eagles game...
I gotta say when Reggie took that shot and more than less walked it off… that was a “man-up” moment for him. I remember watching that game in my parent-in-laws FEMA trailor and at that hit, we all jumped up and I thought the trailor wouldn’t make it.
Yoo many to choose from
if you include all of the games with blunders and soul-crushing moments, so I’ll focus on the good stuff.
3 Stand out in my head, all from the 1987 season, back when I was in high school and I went to every game with my dad:
- vs 49ers in the dome – we lost on a missed FG at the buzzer, but a classic Jim Mora post-game tirade turned the entire franchise around – “woulda, coulda, shoulda.” Showed Mora wouldn’t stand for the same old crap
- at 49ers – great game. Reggie Sutton blocked a FG for a TD (I think it was Johnnie Poe running it in). Montana threw a TD to put the niners ahead, but Morten just barely made a FG to retake the lead and then, as Montana was driving again, Tony Elliot knocked the ball out of the center’s hand before he could set it. Refs didn’t see it and time ran out – very sweet to screw them after they’d ripped out our hearts so many times.
- at Steelers – Game that clinched our first winning season ever. Defense had an epic goal-line stand to seal victory. Can still hear Jim Henderson with the call on 4th down.
vs Rams
I remember a game vs Rams when Warner and Faulk played for Rams and they usually had their way with us. This game was an important one- we won it – maybe we clinched the division that time, but we beat the Rams when they were a very good team (so were we) – I don’t think it was a playoff game – I am a little hazy on this one but I was on the road in Md. and watched it at a dive bar and I believe it was a December game. Maybe someone else remembers. I think it was late 80’s or early 90’s.
2000?
Must have been the game in 2000, Aaron Brooks’ first game as a starter. Jeff Blake had just been knocked out for the year the week before and Brooks had to go to St. Louis and play Rams (defending champs I think). If memory serves, we had a bunch of scrubs at RB too because Ricky Willimas was injured as well. Great game – back before Haslett went insane and lost ability to coach.
We did lose to the Rams on the last game of the season that year, but beat them the very next week for our first playoff win.
Blocked Punt..
ranks right behind it but for me but the emtions were so different.
Hakim drops the ball I was giddy dancing and yelling and cheering.
Opening the dome, the punt is blocked i was on my feet with tears streaming down my face.
Hell, im crying just remembering it.

You said "memorable" and "blunder"
Welcome, mjy. I’ve been waiting on Satch to post his, but I’ll put this one out for starters. I watched this on TV since I’m in the Cowboys’ TV market. I remember I grabbed a Puffs box and jumped up off the sofa, then in a rage tore that box in half with one hand. I looked down and went “whoa”. And then I wiped my tears with those Puffs. At age 27. Totally serious. Check this out, no wonder I hate the Cowboys so much:

Saints @ Cowboys
……………………… 1 ..2 …3 ..4 ..OT . T
New Orleans Saints 0 17 .10 ..0 .. 0 …. 27
Dallas Cowboys ….. 3 .3 …0 21 .. 3 …..30
“prevent defense”= 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to tie, lost it by a field goal in over time. Classic example of Saints’ (and Saints fans’) bad heads, being good enough to beat Dallas but not thinking they are good enough, and choking. We need sports psychologists!!!!!!
Too young to remember much about 1984
I didn’t see that one Stujo. I didn’t really start paying attention to the Saints until 1987. From your description of that game, I’m glad I didn’t see it. Certainly, the 2006 blow out of the Cowboys was a memorable game I enjoyed immensely. All the other games listed (against the Eagles in 2006 and Jan. 2007, Rams in 2000) were awesome too. The only other one that jumps out at me, and not for good reasons, is the “River City Relay” game against Jacksonville in 2002 or 2003 I believe. I still haven’t gotten over that missed extra point by Carney. Still, despite that miss, I wish we still had Carney on the team today.
Go Saints!!!!

Saints 24, Pittsburgh 14, Dec. 15 1968
The first Saints game I ever attended. We sat in the end zone in Tulane Stadium with the wind blowing right in our faces, and it was the coldest I’ve ever been in my life. My feet were gone by halftime, and about the middle of the fourth quarter I was wondering if I was going to survive. But we won!

Good one, wish I’d been there. Some people may say “How cold could it possibly get in NOLA in December??” I stood outside St. Louis Cathedral on Christmas Eve for about 90 minutes a few years ago, it was very very cold, too cold to be outside that long with a light jacket.
I went to LSU with a girl from NY, and she said
that winter down there was the coldest she’d ever known. When it’s in the 30s, drizzling, and the humidity is 99%, you can’t believe how hard you shiver and how much your bones ache, unless you’ve been there. With a light jacket.
River City Relay
I’m not sure I have ever gone from one extreme to the other so damn quickly.
My favorite game is 06 in Dallas because I went to that one. 42-17 and chanting WHO DAT in Texas Stadium. That was a great time.
Also went to the playoff win vs. the Eagles and I have never heard the Dome rockin’ like that. It was awesome.
Saints vs Bears
1983 – Saints vs Bears in the Superdome. Walter Peyton throws two TD passes to rookie WR Willie Gault. Rookie QB Jim McMahon sits on bench. Saints win in OT, 38 to 35!
Saints vs Cardinals
Saints playing Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St Louis. Both Billy Kilmer and Charlie Johnson toss 6 TD’s each! Saints win with 50 plus points!
