Saints Sign New Cornerback!?
Ran across this on the Saints website:
Taking his place on the roster will be cornerback Leigh Torrence, whom the Saints claimed off waivers from the Washington Redskins.
Also:
Torrence is a third-year pro who has played in 35 career regular season games with one start, making 43 tackles on defense and 29 more on special teams. The 5-11, 179-pound product of Stanford University played in Washington’s first nine games this season before being waived on Saturday. So far in ’08, Torrence has recorded nine tackles as a reserve defensive back along with 11 on special teams.

Well...
…all I can say is: Tyler Thigpen, 135.2.
Fire Gary Gibbs!

rotoworld.com:
Tyler Thigpen should have no trouble lighting up this secondary in Week 11.

rotoworld.com:
Tyler Thigpen completed 27-of-41 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed twice for 26 yards.
First-year starting QBs are supposed to be “game managers,” but the Chiefs have given Thigpen free reign. He is playing highly aggressive and doesn’t lack any of the required physical tools. However, Thigpen has yet to put together two straight strong halves in a game. His accuracy took a sudden tumble in the second half Sunday and the Chiefs dropped to 1-7.

No brag, just fact: I already posted this
Do the Saints need Leigh Torrance?
rotoworld.com:
Redskins waived CB Leigh Torrence.
Torrence loses his roster spot to DeAngelo Hall, who was officially signed Saturday. It’s a pretty surprising cut since Torrence had impressed most observers with his play this year and was ahead of some disappointing Washington draft picks.

more missed opportunities; is PayLoo even looking???
rotoworld.com:
Jets agreed to terms with DB Ty Law, according to NFL Network’s Adam Schefter.
Eric Mangini timed the move to maximize the annoyance factor for New England. Law will be used at cornerback and safety, which makes sense considering his excellent tackling ability and poor speed. Don’t expect him to make a major impact on the Jets defense. Law struggled badly in Kansas City.

Let's see....
how he fares in the Gary Gibbs defense. My money is on not so good. Jason David was considered a pretty decent CB until he came here too. Now look at him.
Go Saints!!!!

Apparently
The Saints weren’t the only team interested in him. From the Washington Post:
Recently released cornerback Leigh Torrence was claimed off waivers by the Saints and Vikings, according to sources. He was awarded to New Orleans based on fact that they have a worse record.
Among the teams that expressed interest in having him visit had he become a free agent were the Patriots, Bears, Eagles and Ravens.

If he's good enough for those teams
he’s good for me.

Good player
too bad he’ll end up looking like a scrub in this defense of the damned. Still, he’s probably the best DB on the roster right now. Hopefully the next DC can do something with him

This is a great pickup
Guys, it’s time to look to next season. This is like picking up a good draft pick! We got him for nothing.

Hmmmm
Tracy Porter and Leigh Torrence at corner; Roman Harper and Mike McKenzie at safety. Sean McDermott as the new defensive coordinator. Draft a top-notch pass rusher, and see what Dunbar can do at linebacker.
Could it work? Can you feel the hope creeping back in, like the flu?

Absolutely. I'm already hopeful for next year.
We just need a few pieces. I think the defense is playing pretty well this year and any upgrade on the line or at corner will solidify us. Changing the coordinator will fix the rest of the problems.
I don’t know what the offense needs? New playcalling, 2 runningbacks, an Arrington, and maybe some more linemen.

Let's hope you're right
And while we’re at it, let’s hope two more things: one, we get a new defensive coordinator; and two, he’s a Jim Johnson/Steve Spagnuolo type who believes in being aggressive and knows how to teach his personnel how to blitz!
Fire Gary Gibbs!

Another CB?
From the NOLA Saints blog:
The Saints signed cornerback David Pittman, a Gramercy native who went to Northwestern State and last played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2007. They also put fullback David Kirtman, who played with Reggie Bush at USC and was last with the San Francisco 49ers, on the practice squad.
To free up spots, the Saints released defensive tackle Remi Ayodele from the active roster and linebacker Ben Moffitt from the practice squad.
