Good morning Saints fans,
My name is Chris and along with many others run Arrowhead Pride, the local Kansas City Chiefs blog. I'm posting here to answer any questions about the Chiefs you may have.
It seems like both defenses are pretty banged up; we're both hoping our starting running back can come back and play well; and our quarterback made a deal with the devil to become the #1 fantasy football player the last three weeks.
I'll link back to this post on AP to send our readers over here to help answer too.

Do i need to ensure that my health insurance is up to snuff since i am coming down to Arrowhead to cheer for the Saints? Is there any peace offering that Chiefs fans prefer?

Most don't make it back to the parking lot
In terms of peace offerings though, Gates BBQ is never a bad thing.

Arrowhead or Bust
The experience in KC is one of the best you will ever find. If you wear your Saints jersey you will get some good-hearted ribbing, but the same guys cracking jokes will probably offer you some BBQ and a couple drinks. The stadium can get loud (if we’re playing well) and is a great environment for getting into a game.
I’d say you have nothing to worry about, but if you want to make friends bring some meat and drinks and I guarantee someone will share their grill with you.

I am kidding…i have been to enough hockey games rooting for the opposing teams and know that good natured ribbing goes both ways…and jackasses usually get whats coming to them…you dont go into someone elses house and start being a prick…
One of the reasons why i chose to head to see this game was i have heard nothing but awesome things about the Arrowhead experience (both the game itself and the awesome tail gating)…cant wait to hit the road…12 hour drive from Winnipeg and i am there…any recommendations for places to go are more than welcome…i have heard rumors about awesome BBQ…any truth to that…

Want to know where to get the best BBQ?
Louisiana. No kidding…with all the talk about gumbo and jambalaya and crawfish and such, Cajun barbecue has been pretty much overlooked. But southern Louisiana is where Texas barbecue got its doctorate. I’ve been all over the South; now I live in North Carolina, which prides itself on its barbecue (God knows why), and there is none that can stand up to Louisiana’s. (If you’ve eaten anything down there, this won’t surprise you.)
Never been to KC, though, so there’s a chance, a teeninecy chance, that it might be as good as Louisiana’s. But I doubt it.

Want to know where to freeze your ass off?
Well i am a Canadian…we don’t get BBQ other than Tony Roma’s…which cant compare to anything…i lived a few years in the Caribbean…but that’s different altogether…
I will be getting my frozen ass down to Louisiana one day…have to see a Saints game in the Dome…
I’ll trade you…you come up here with some good BBQ and i will get you hammer drunk on potent Canadian beer, slap you with a fish, and show you some gorgeous women…something the good folks in North Dakota have been making the trip over to see for years…if i had a dollar for every time i saw Americans coming to Winnipeg to take advantage of a younger legal drinking age and stronger booze…i would be a very rich man…

An intriguing offer
I must admit: I have never thought of vacationing in Winnipeg. But you know, we actually get better beer down here now. And as far as freezing your ass off, Louisiana does a good job with that one, too. We don’t get blizzards, but we do get freezing temperatures with 100% humidity, and that can snap your bones, you’ll be shivering so hard. I’ve heard plenty of yankees complaining about it.
(We also have gorgeous women. I married one of them myself.)

No mention of getting slapped with a fish though…one up on ya…
We get both extremes summer is balls hot with very high humidity…although we rarely get over the 100 degrees Fahrenheit…as for the winters…good lord…usually around the -25 Celsius…but we go down to -35 for quite a stretch…add the wind chill factor and you get down to -50 or -58 Fahrenheit…
Come to KC and we will have a drinking competition…as long as i can hit the pisser i guarantee i win…heh

winterpeg
My folks live just outside the Peg.
Winters there are the reason i quit smoking 3 pack a day cold turkey
You go outside at -40 ( went to convert this to F and found -40 = -40 ) to have a smoke and then find out that doesnt include the windchill.
Well that was my last cigerette in the Peg.
But Gramps is not lying. They do have the best looking women there, you just have to be there in summer to see them.

A couple of places
Most people will plug Gates for good BBQ, and they wouldn’t be wrong. Gates makes a mean BBQ. But I personally like Fiorella’s Jack Stack. The wait isn’t usually as long and the BBQ is freakin’ delicious. A smaller (and cheaper) place to get some good BBQ is RC’s. Places I haven’t personally been to but have heard good things about include BB’s Lawnside and Arthur Bryant’s. Still, I’d go with Fiorella’s.

You better get to Arthur Bryants soon
I live in California, but try to fly to KC every other season for a game (which I was supposed to do this year, but opted to wait until after the Arrowhead rebuilding season). But I order all of my BBQ sauce online, the only place I can get AB’s and have it shipped out here. Trust me, every person that has tried the tri-tip I make with arthur bryants sauce falls in love.

What part of California?
My stepmom lives in Ventura and makes tri-tip all the time. It’s a cut we don’t get back east, but it seems to be all the rage there.

RC's
Are you talking about the RC’s off 135th or LC’s down by the stadium?

What's the coaching situation there?
Here in New Orleans (actually, I’m typing in North Carolina, but it’s not my fault) the muttering is growing into a growl regarding the coaching tenure of both Sean Payton and (especially) defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs. [see signature] What’s the situation there with Herman Edwards and Gunther Cunningham?

Since the Chiefs have started to turn things around the last few games
I think the consensus is that if we can show signs of major improvement for the rest of the season, Herm will be back again next year as well as Gunther. Gun is a pretty well liked guy around here… and although our defense has not been as strong this year, a lot of that can be attributed to our ridiculous level of injuries and the large number of new young starters on defense this year (3 on the DL, 1 LB, and both CBs). I think Gun will stick around no matter what, but Herm needs to hope for some major improvement over the next few games or else he’ll be gone.

although our defense has not been as strong this year
Oh, Vince. Wait until you see our guys. You’ll think you’ve got the 1985 Bears D.
The coach makes all the difference. I’d love to have Gunther Cunningham in New Orleans. Even a Gunther wannabe. SOMEBODY to chew ass and instill some discipline and aggression, using a scheme that is down to earth and in a language that everyone here can easily understand. When’s the last time we saw somebody REALLY hit someone?

Your right about......
down to earth and in a language that everyone here can easily understand.
Gun only speaks in superlatives. He’s the only person that I’ve heard talk that can make your ears hurt from all the adjectives and color that’s in his language. He also likes to tickle the noses of his LB’s when he get in their faces, and starts chewing their asses off for blowing an assignment. Only problem I can see that the LB’s don’t like is all that saliva which comes out when gently explains what he expects from his Defense.
What’s not to love? Great guy!

That is a really cool pic, the Saints look fat and in awe of... Who is that? Bobby Sippio?; I'm guessing it's the 2007 preseason game
1) Is Tyler Thigpen the Chiefs’ QB of the future, or just another Steve Fuller? (#4, get it?)
2) What is the balance of the fund being collected to hire an assassin to take care of King Carl Peterson?
3) When is Larry Johnson’s contract up and what is the plan to replace him?
"Coach Payton REALLY needs to string together some wins."
by stujo4 on Nov 13, 2008 9:20 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I believe the pic is Samie Parker... I'm pretty sure he was #18. We've all pretty much forgotten about him by now.
1) I think the consensus over at AP is that if Thigpen finishes the year strong, we should still look into drafting a QB in one of the mid to late rounds for competition and depth. We are all starting to jump on the Thigpen bandwagon though, which is great because we’ve had very little to be excited about the first five weeks of the season.
2) By now, I think that fund is in the millions. There are still some of us that would like to keep him on board as our president/CEO, but I’d say just about all of us are aching for a new GM. He plans not to reseek the position of GM when his contract expires next year though, so that is good news for everyone.
3) Larry Johnson still has 4 years left on his contract. He has shown that he’s still capable of playing at a high level as long as the offensive line is doing their job, but there’s no doubt that he can be a major distraction for our team. He says he’s trying to turn his life around, but we’ll see. RB is actually our deepest position, which is good because we were on our 4th string RB last week. We drafted a fifth round back in 07 named Kolby Smith, and he is built like LJ… the kind of back that we like to give the ball to 25 times a game. This year we drafted Jamaal Charles in the 3rd round, and we’ve used him mostly as a third down back since he is lightning fast and is proficient in pass blocking. We also have RB Dantrell Savage who was overlooked in the draft for his size, but turned out to be a major steal as a UDFA. We’ve been using him for kick returns just to get him involved and he took some snaps last week when our other 3 backs were hurt. We also have a guy on the practice squad named Jackie Battle that showed us a lot of flashes of brilliance in the preseason, and he is a well built guy as well. So we are pretty set at RB for a while.

To piggy-back on VinceD
Yeah, that’s definitely Sammie Parker – and if were video and we could go forward 15 seconds you would see either:
a. He ended up dropping that pass
or
b. He made the catch and then spiked the ball and did an end-zone type dance for what turned out to be a 5 yard gain.
Now for my serious adds:
1. We are slowly but surely (and still very cautiously) falling in like with Thigpen. It’s a little too early to call him the QBotF, but I think we all believe that if he keeps progressing at the same pace that he has so far he just might be. In any case, most of us believe that he will at least be the front-runner for the starting spot next year unless he totally poops the bed sometime soon, or we draft an absolute monster in next year’s draft that unseats him in the preseason (which seems a bit far fetched).
2. The end of Carl’s reign is nigh. The fund has slowed due to current economic conditions. Plus we’re stoked about the Mark Bradley acquisition, and this year’s draft class has been pretty good. I’d like him to leave on a high note… but the emphasis there should be that I would like him to leave.
3. Vince summed that up pretty well. I think Battle is even more in the mold of LJ than Kolby Smith – but Kolby seems like a serviceable back too. Battle is a big lug of a back with great speed for his size. Like VInce said, I think we’re actually ok at RB for a while. Considering the injuries we’ve sustained this year, I’m glad we kept 4 on the active roster going in to the season. We’ve needed every one of them so far.

Regarding Thigpen
He’s got a (rental, for now) place in my heart, because for the first time in my memory, Peterson’s rolled in a /young/ QB with real possibilities. Even if he did steal him of the Vikings’ practice squad, so to speak.
Compared to Huard, Thiggy walks on water, and compaed to Croyle, Tyler’s tough enough to chew nails and spit thumbtacks. All of which makes him – average? Maybe a little better than that? Then again, he’s thrown for TDs in the last few games, and thrown no INTs, so make of it what you will.
I wish all you Saints’ fans the best of luck – AFTER your boys lose at Arrowhead! ;-)
by Bleedingredandgold on Nov 13, 2008 12:36 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Thigpen is no Drew Brees
But having a competent guy back there that isn’t afraid to move the ball down the field is the difference between the Chiefs getting blown out of game the first half of the season and nearly winning the last three. We’re still a first year rebuilding team that is very young with lots of rookies (and undrafted rookies) starting and tons of guys out hurt, but finally getting some consistent play at QB has made a ton of difference between this team looking embarrassing to looking like they have as much a shot to win as the team they’re playing.
by ChiefDJ on Nov 13, 2008 10:15 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
I think the Chiefs’ first 6 games and their last 3 games are testimony to the never underestimated importance of a competent QB.
