I would like to know what his philosophy is and what makes it so sound.

Gibbs played linebacker; he coached linebackers at a high level; Fujita, who defends him staunchly, is a linebacker. Apparently, playing/coaching the linebacker position is what Gibbs was made to do. Defensive coordinator is his own personal demonstration of the validity of the principle that people tend to rise to their level of incompetence.
