A league source told Scout Rumor Central that the New Orleans Saints are expected to work out free agent RB Mike Bell on Tuesday.

The former Denver Bronco spent time briefly with the Houston Texans in the preseason.

The Saints might have lost backup RB Aaron Stecker (hamstring), who was injured during Sunday's win over the Kansas City Chiefs, for an extended period of time.

The team also expressed recent interest in free agent RB Najeh Davenport.

Najeh Davenport

might be an interesting pickup. He had a 4.7 average last year. I have no idea why the Steelers cut him…did he do something wrong?

But Mike Bell? The Saints don’t run a zone blocking scheme like they use in Denver. What do they see in him that makes them believe he would be a fit here?

here's an excellent opportunity to pull up my old Fanpost about Dookie

Click on his name in the Read Related section above, and… Damn!! I didn’t put his name in my original fanpost. See how that’s supposed to work? And it was funny too. I think.

Yeah, Mike Bell? Jeez, what about Shaun Alexander?

rotoworld.com:

Oct. 8, 2008 – 11:42 p.m. ET
Beat reporter Ed Bouchette believes that Najeh Davenport will stay with the Steelers’ roster for the rest of the season.
Dookie saw only one carry with Willie Parker out in Week 5 and Gary Russell figures to be higher on the depth chart going forward, but Davenport can pass block and play special teams. He’s too situationally valuable to cut.

Nov. 8, 2008 – 10:51 a.m. ET
Steelers released RB Najeh Davenport.
Dookie was expected to take on a pass blocking and special teams role after he was signed last month, but Mewelde Moore’s emergence has left him without a role on offense. With Davenport nursing a hamstring injury, rookie linebacker Donovan Woods was promoted to take over special teams duties.

Mike Bell clues

rotoworld.com:

Jul. 26, 2008 – 9:41 a.m. ET
Free agent RB Mike Bell, released by Denver on Monday, may work out this weekend with the Patriots.
With his ability to play tailback or fullback, Bell does have the versatility the Pats like. The team also kicked the tires on Kevin Jones awhile back, so they appear to be in the market for backfield depth.
Source: ESPN.com

Jul. 31, 2008 – 2:32 p.m. ET
Texans signed RB Mike Bell, formerly of the Broncos.
Bell may only be insurance behind injured Chris Brown for now, but it’s an ideal landing spot. The Texans’ backfield is wide open and supposed starter Ahman Green has not stood out early in camp. We’ve got a ways to go and Bell isn’t at all locked into a roster spot, but he can’t be ruled out for a role. Bell can make one cut and go and excels in short-yardage situations. If Ron Dayne can be effective in Houston, Bell has a shot too.

Aug. 8, 2008 – 9:28 a.m. ET
Texans placed RB Mike Bell on waivers.
Bell was brought in for depth while Chris Brown was injured. But he didn’t do himself any favors by arriving to camp out of football shape and injuring his hamstring in the first practice.

So...

Especially with Karney out, Davenport might be valuable. But who gets cut if someone is added? Doesn’t the merry-go-round ever stop?
