Packers 29 @ Saints 51: Making the Grade
Quarterback A+
This is the worst part of my job. Right here, right now. Trying to come up with enough superlatives to express the sheer transcendant awesomeness that is our quarterback is damn near impossible. Every week I struggle to come up with a fresh, new way to say I love Drew Brees more than Mcrib's. I hope and pray that football fans all over the country know what is going on down here with our boy Brees. And how is Kurt Warner even a slight consideration in the Year of Brees?
Running Back B+
I am trying so hard to not write an entire post on how Pierre needs to be made more a part of this offense but he is making it so dang hard. Has anything about Pierre Thomas' numbers ever said anything but "give him the ball." I won't give this unit an A until they get a 100 yard rushing effort.
Receiving A-
As usual, with Brees spreading the ball around, seven different receivers had touches. Lance Moore continues to surprise America with his play and he only seems to be getting better. Shockey finally made himself valuable and Colston is on his was back. Finally. The receivers don't get the full A though because of Colston's quick flip.
Offensive Line B
I'm not sure whether it was a poor effort from Green Bay's defensive line or a great effort on the offensive line's part but the end result was good. Brees had all day and thats because of these guys. Even more of a pleasant surprise was this units run blocking. Pierre had some nice holes to get through.
Defensive Line B+
The official notes in my itouch, which I use to remember things during the games, say "Bobby McCray=beast." I think thats a good summation. I really thought Bobby had about 3 sacks while I sat there in my Dome seat but the stat sheet reads 0. Regardless, McCray had a great game and was in Rodgers face a lot. Sedrick Ellis also had himself a big game as well. Extra points for Man Child's Pee-Wee Herman dance.
Linebackers B
Vilma is back! After not showing up at the top of the stats sheet for a couple of weeks, he is back at number one this week. Interestingly enough, Fujita now had a quiet day with only 3 tackles. Maybe one of these games both of them can step up and have big days but its interesting that they seem to alternate when they turn in big performances. Scott Shanle was also very active out there.
Secondary A-
Jason David really changed this game. His interceptions allowed for a 21 point 3rd quarter and the insurmountable lead. Everyone in the secondary appeared to play at their highest level. Randall Gay made a couple of great pass breakups, Roman Harper had a diving deflection and Usama Young had some nice hits. It was like everything finally came together on one night. We need more of this for the rest of the season. Kaesviharn's needless and stupid interception in the endzone doesn't earn them the full A.
Special Teams B+
Fortunately we didn't have to see too much of Garrett Hartley but he nevertheless remains perfect as a Saint. Pakulak's punting didn't seem to be as sharp as usual. I am really liking Courtney Roby on the kick returns. He's gonna get one, I can feel it!

Overall performance gets a B+
Payton gets a B, only because of that Lance Moore pass play and the 4th quarter 2-pt conversion attempt.
Go Saints!!!!

I agree
The Lance Moore pass play was too “cutesy” but I can kind of understand going for the 2 in the 4th, it would have forced GB to convert 2 pts every score if they could have managed to score 3 times. Going for 2 wasn’t really necessary but I see the logic behind the thinking, especially with the track record of the D.

I’d give them an A-.
I don’t want to be a downer, but they still have a lot of areas to improve on, especially against our division rivals.
I love Payton’s aggressive plays, but I’m not fond of his unnecessary play calling.
I just hope with R.Bush back in the line up, they use him correctly. If I can see a game where Bush is used properly while PT gets >15 touches, I don’t see how the offense can be stopped.
Defensively, Monday’s speed and aggressive play is a must.
We can TOTALLY run the table… I’m praying we do.

Give'em a Break
Don’t be so down on K Kaesviharn. Sure it was stupid, but it was an interception and it was late in the game. I think we’d be getting too greedy if we start complaining about interceptions from our secondary, which are very few and far between.

That is not the first 4th down ball that the secondary has picked off.
I believe Usama had one last game.
4th down picks = 4th down punts most of the time.
Why does a DB not bat it down? and get the ball back at the line?
Is it stat padding? Greed? Nonawareness?

Probably just the adrenaline behind that game…and proving to himself or to couches…“hey look…i am actually capable of making a pick”…

What's wrong with
proving to the coach, “hey look, I know how to make proper game decisions in real time?”

Couches…jeebus my spelling skills suck today…
As for the pick…i don’t know…i have been in a similar situation playing also hockey where i have done something that made my coach at the time almost pull his hair out…so i am also guilty of letting adrenaline get the better of me…so i wont critique KK for doing it…

stujo grades on the curve
Offensive Line= B+
zone blocking = B+
pass protection = A
Secondary= B- They got beat a lot. If A-Rodg had been on his game, it would’ve been a REAL shootout.

Re: Pierre Thomas
Just to deflect the conversation off the main topic and make things more difficult for Dave to manage…
Pierre had great stats for the Green Bay game—5.8 per carry and 11.3 per reception—but how has he done over the season? Especially: how has he done compared to Reggie?
I just looked up the stats on NFL.com. Pierre so far has averaged a very respectable 4.9 yards per carry, as opposed to Reggie’s 3.4. No surprise there. But he’s also averaging 9.1 yards per reception, beating Reggie’s 8.7. Holy crow! What’s going on here? Could it be…Pierre is better?

oh jeez...
This is approaching Lito Sheppard proportions. Payton had better get PT some carries, even if PT should get stuffed a few times. The run must NOT be abandoned.

HA! I was watching the tape last night, Saints’ pass failed to get a first down. Payton comes ON to the field to meet Brees coming off so Drew can tell him exactly what went wrong; you know, two QB’s just talking. He doesn’t do that when a running play doesn’t work.

also
Lance’s first touchdown, he’s checking the big monitor above his head as he’s cruising in for the score! Missed that, live. I was yelling “He’s checking himself out on the Jumbotron!” My wife says “He’s using that to see if anyone’s close to tackling him.” Oh. He can’t turn his head a little? I think he’s watching himself run. Lance!
