SB Nation's NFL Mid-Season Studs and Duds for 2008

It is now time for SB Nation's Studs and Duds for the first half of the season as voted by all of the SB Nation writers. I will say that I cannot believe Drew Brees didn't get chosen as MVP thus far. I'm also not that impressed with Clinton Portis. Maybe I'm biased but, hey, can you blame me? Check out the rest of the winners and losers and let everyone know what you think!

Clinton Portis is playing like an MVP right now.

The Studs

NFL Mid-Season MVP: Clinton Portis, Redskins

Comment from David the Falconer at The Falcoholic:

The homer in me wants to say Michael Turner, but he's done the majority of his damage against the league's weakest defenses. Portis has put the Redskins on his back and carried them 100 yards or more down the field most games, and for that he deserves my vote.

Best Player on Offense: Clinton Portis, Redskins

Comment from Skins Patrol at Hogs Haven:

He also has 150 yards receiving and has had his role increase with the injury to Ladell Betts Not everyone knows this, but Portis is the best pass protecting RB blocker in the league and is a big reason why Jason Campbell is playing well this season.

Best Players on Defense: Joey Porter, Dolphins

Comment from BigBlueShoe at Stampede Blue:

I thought this guy was DEAD. How the hell does he have 11.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles? I mean Jeezus, it is only Week Nine and he has 11.5 friggin' sacks! The hell are they feeding them down there in Miami?

Best Rookie: Chris Johnson, Titans

Comment from cgolden at Revenge of the Birds:

No explanation needed. Just watch this kid play and it's obvious why he's truly special. Were we really questioning his status as a first round pick six months ago?

Best Coach: Jim Zorn, Redskins

Comment from WCG at Windy City Gridiron:

I hate doing this, but in that division the Redskins should have easily been the worst team.

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio has seen better days.

The Duds

Mid-Season Worst Player: JaMarcus Russell, Raiders

Comment from Dave the Falconer at The Falcoholic:

Consider that this guy was the first overall pick in the draft. Then consider that he can't throw a pass without collapsing into a heap.

Mid-Season Worst Rookie: Vernon Gholston, Jets

Comment from cgolden at Revenge of the Birds:

He's learning a new position so this probably isn't fair but seven tackles in eight games for a top six pick is simply unacceptable. You'd think he could at least be a situational pass rusher.

Mid-Season Worst Coach: Jack Del Rio, Jaguars

Comment from Chris at Big Cat Country:

Can I vote for Del Rio and the Jaguars for every possible spot?

I'm shocked

I’d have said Mike Smith was doing a FAR better job in ATL than Zorn in DC, and that Brees (homer alert, I know) was the Offensive Player of the Half-Season.

Damn right on JaMarcus Russell though. Who’s the worst front office in football, the Lions or the Raiders?

hmm

MVP .

My take on it is… The most valuable person to their team, pretend he gets hurt steping out the shower this morning. . Portis MVP? Dont think so. Great season yes but hes ONE of the pieces clicking.

Brees – We are doomed without him.

MVP = Brees

MVP isn't just great performance, but great results

Portis is having a great season, stat-wise. So does Washington have the best rushing offense? Nope…they’re 5th. Portis is what’s making Campbell click? Washington is 19th in passing. What about total offense, then? 10th place.

Drew Brees is having such a phenomenal season that not only is New Orleans #1 in passing, they’re #1 overall despite being 29th in rushing! We’re still in the playoff hunt despite having a terrible defense (without Brees, I don’t think we would have beaten anyone but Oakland). That is an MVP, friends. Portis is just a good running back.

Jack Del Rio- the end is near

Coach sent MLB and captain Mike Peterson home Wednesday. He reassigned at least 6 players to new lockers (?) and told the team he didn’t want any distractions such as music, televisions, Xbox in the locker room.

He also said he is bringing the giant tree trunk back in so they can get back to chopping wood. OK I made that one up.

Maybe we can get Del Rio to be the Saints’ defensive coordinator after he gets fired.

That would be appropriate

He’s a former Saint. We drafted him in 1985. We gave him his first coaching job in 1997. He might be a very good fit…especially since he has experience as a strength coach, too.

he don't take any sass neither

rotoword.com:

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Mike Peterson was dismissed by the Jaguars this week because he challenged coach Jack Del Rio in a team meeting.
Del Rio “called out” several players in a Monday meeting and Peterson tried to defend himself. Del Rio wasn’t pleased that Peterson flexed his biceps after a sack with Jacksonville down 21-3 to the Bengals in Week 9. Del Rio also targeted Reggie Williams, Matt Jones, and Jerry Porter for erupting in laughter in the locker room after the loss. The Jags’ record stands at 3-5.

Jack's still a badass

rotoworld.com:

Jaguars MLB and team captain Mike Peterson is not expected to be active in Week 10 after he was sent home from the team facility again Thursday.
