Saints 20 @ Falcons 34: Immediate Reaction
I'm obviously disappointed with this game and the Saints performance but I am going to wait a little while and gather my emotions before I fly off the handle. Things look pretty bleak right now. I'll just go through some initial observations and reactions.
Drew Brees
Drew put up some big numbers in the yardage department. Unfortunately he put up some big numbers in the interception department too. His passer rating was pretty pathetic too. But you gotta admire his tenacity; he kept going until the bitter end throwing a Hail Mary to Lance Moore in the end zone with no time left.
Pressure
Or lack thereof. These guys got absolutely no pressure on the Falcons. Matt Ryan had all day to carve up the Saints awful secondary. Will Smith has been pathetic and today he had only one solo tackle. This unit has not come anywhere near their pre-season goal of copying the Giants pass rush of 2007.
Marques Colston
It's nice to have him back. I miss seeing those extremely long arms pluck balls out of mid-air like a frog eating a fly. Colston put up some pretty impressive numbers and made at least one clutch third down catch but he still missed a couple of other catches that normally I think he would have made.
Lance Moore
The announcers said that Drew Brees compared Lance to Marvin Harrison. That is pretty impressive. Moore made that great catch along the sidelines for the crucial first down. Is he the now the number 2 guy behind Colston?
Pierre Thomas
Pierre quietly put together a pretty decent game. I will spare all of you from my usual "Let Pierre touch it more" rant but for only being utilized sporadically he still manages to put together some pretty big gains. Let Pierre touch it more. Let any running back touch it more. Just run the ball more!
Mike McKenzie
You thought it couldn't get worse but believe me...it could. Payton said he had a fractured patella. We will have to wait and see what that means but it doesn't sound good.
Offensive Line
These guys struggled all day particularly Jammal Brown. He had a tough time handling John Abraham on the left side and even a double team wasn't getting it done. Nicks and Lehr were responsible for a few penalties. Also, Payton said Stinchcomb injured his calf.
Secondary
These guys are all regressing. Every game they seem to get worse and worse. Obviously the continuous injuries aren't helping but this unit is starting to look eerily similar to last years. Randall Gay is becoming this years Jason David.
Jonathan Vilma
Pretty quiet game from the defensive leader. He only notched 3 tackles. However, Scott Fujita stepped up in his place and had a great game with 12 tackles.
Garrett Hartley
It wasn't all bad today. I think the performance of new kicker Garrett Hartley is pretty promising. He nailed everything and kicked at least one and maybe two into the end zone. This guy just might stick around (choir sings Hallelujah). I think he could have been trusted to make that 45-yarder before the end of the first half.
Glenn Pakulak
Pakulak didn't look so bad either. He had one bad kick but his first one was a boomer. I won't even attempt to pretend to know whether Payton is going to stick with him or not.
Deuce McAllister
Deuce started the game and appeared to be doing fine. Then he just disappeared entirely for the middle the of the game. No worries thought because he came back and caught a pass for a touchdown. He gingerly walked into the endzone. He looked pretty sad and upset on the sideline after the game.
Domonique Foxworth
It's bad enough having to watch the Saints secondary play like crap but having to watch a really good cornerback like Foxworth is just pouring salt in an open wound. Foxworth played very well today and was in on a lot of key pass breakups.
Jeremy Shockey
I am honestly worried about what we might possibly hear from Shockey in the next day or two regarding what happened on the sidelines. Brees gave him an earful and he appeared to be sulking on the bench in the second half and it didn't look like he was happy. He also limped off the field with an ankle injury so fire and brimstone is sure to rain down.
Billy Miller
Speaking of Jeremy Shockey. I still like Billy Miller better. He's just a blue collar guy. He had a pretty good game albeit a quiet one. I think Miller demands more respect.

Here is the roll call. This was a fun open thread. Thanks to everyone who was involved, especially new member fruly he came out from under a rock.

His team is uncoached, they’re all out of shape and getting hurt, and they can’t win 2 in a row.

Drew
can he win in the 4th quarter? Not in the past 2 seasons. I wish his big numbers would add up to wins. Big numbers without winning reminds me of a former Saints qb…
Colston had a good game today but he sure had a lot of drops, too.
And I think that one INT in the end zone is Lance Moore’s fault. He had to at least get his hand on that ball enough to stop it (and probably could have caught it.) He just made a terrible play on the ball.
On defense, our inability to stop the pass is so obvious. Giving Roddy a 10-15 foot cushion is probably not necessary.

The rest of this season is practice
we might as well retool the coaching staff, retool the players as much as possible, and start looking at next year. Maybe we can throw the rest of our games and get a top pick in the draft?

glad I had to work today
I had to work for the carolina game, too.
Maybe I need to just quit.

I'm so over the coaching staff I could spit
I’ve always been a Payton fan, but after this year if you told me he resigned i wouldn’t be upset. Reality is that he’s here to stay (at least until the end of 09) so we might as well make the best of it.
Coaching is the most under-rated aspect of the NFL, and we must have some pretty crappy ones. I’m too angry to coherently collect my thoughts on this matter – more on this later this week.
Another year of Brees down the toilet.

Another year of Brees down the toilet.
That’s what hurts the most.

Its very hard to type when you really want to throw your computer against the wall...
Its 11:30 on Sunday, and I’ve just finished watching my DVR’ed game. I demanded that my buddies not tell me what happened with the game as we made our way back to Texas from a bachelor party at Coushatta.
I wish they would have told me so I wouldn’t have wasted 3 hours of my life, pissed off and frustrated beyond words.

Our defense plays like a bunch of pussies. Don’t get me wrong. Individually, they aren’t pussies. For the most part, on paper, they are very talented. But for two years they have been bullied, picked on, and used, and have never fought back. Never. That is a direct reflection of the man leading them. I’m sick of it. I can’t stand it anymore.
This game was embarrassing. Heads need to roll. Its past time. Why the hell hasn’t he been fired yet??
BTW, what happened to McKenzie? Please don’t tell me what I don’t want to hear, but have a sick feeling in stomach that it is the case…

Here's a Canadian Perspective
Well Saints fans…
I share your frustrations i really do…and maybe its my polite, always positive Canadian demeanor coming out…but the Saints have really been up against the wall this whole season…
Lets accept it for what it is…you can have all the talent in the world…and blame coaches as much as you like…i think anyone who has played team sports will realize that chemistry plays a huge factor…when you are continuously rotating players in to a lineup as a team gets decimated with injuries that chemistry is going to suffer…furthermore, when you are first coming back from an injury, on-field communication and chemistry is going to suffer as well…i don’t think anyone would disagree with me that our team has suffered a substantial amount of injuries…that being said, these are professional athletes and we expect them to step up and get up to speed as much as possible…
I for one (perhaps naively) am not giving up on the Saints season…i know that there is a serious deficit to overcome…but i still have hope…
I do think that it is time for a new defensive scheme though…it is not overly effective, and with hits to our secondary like we took this weekend, it wont get any better…
I am looking for a big rebound win this weekend…

Dude, I’m really worried about you. You’re setting yourself up for the kind of sould crushing disappointment that most Saints fans have already endured. Save yourself…

That's beautiful!
The entire life of a Saints fan summed up in one picture! Even though I’m convinced this season is already lost and Payton will be even more frustrating next year, I’ll still stick with the team all throughout the offseason and expect yet another phantom championship run in 2009. I’m just a glutton for punishment it seems.
Go Saints!!!!
