What to do with Mike macKenzie next year?
So our season is over and it has come that time of the year to assess our team. As far as offense goes, we are pretty stacked and other than Coach's love of the pass, we seem set to go. Maybe a power running back would be worth finding...
Our defense on the other hand needs an overhaul. Obviously we need a DC that can get Smith and Grant to play for their paychecks, come up with a gameplan that is not reactive but proactive but I think that Gibbs will probably be around next season. Our secondary needs work, which is also obvious. But how do we go about it? I think Tracy Porter will be a good, if not great dback, so I have him starting... but I'm not so show one of my favorite players, Mike MacKenzie will be able to pull his weight on his side of the field. Don't get me wrong, MM has been THE ball hawk for the Saints and I would love to see him back at full strength. I just don't think he can.
So that leads us to what to do with him. Assuming that he is able to come back at all, what about having him start as a safety. Roman Harper and Josh Bullocks are terrible and KK was marginally good until he became a Saint, and then things went down hill. I think if we can draft a high quality SS this year and start MM @ Free Saftey and than pick up a FA Corner, we may have something cooking.
Now I know that it all starts with the front four, but if we can get grant and Smith to play every game like we know they can (or at least close to it), Big Sed in the middle with a healthly DeMario Pressly and Bobby McCray (who with JVilma has been my Defensive Player of the Year for the Saints.) that sounds like a formidable defense, or at least better than we've got now.
Could be living in a dream world, but with the way this season went... I enjoy living in the dream world for a bit longer.

thanks for posting this, Tisk. But whoa whoa whoa...
So our season is over
Some unfinished business to take care of yet.
I’m all for MM at safety until someone tells me why it won’t work. I think Harper is better than he has shown, I’d give him 1 more year. KK and Glenn are gone.
Yes, draft a SS and spend a lot of $$$$ for a free agent cornerback. Absolutely. If these issues are not addressed, we as Saints fans will be forced to rebel. Somehow.

Maybe. But
we thought we had a “formidable” defense going into this year. I did, anyway. That just shows how much attention y’all should pay to anything I type.
I’m with stujo on Harper; but really, what’s the point in plugging in any player until the scheme gets fixed? You alluded to the problem:
KK was marginally good until he became a Saint, and then things went down hill.
So was Jason David. So was Aaron Glenn. I truly believe the problem is that our defensive backs are being asked to do too much. Though I didn’t see the game, I read commentary (here?) on Harper’s interference against Chicago that suggested he was up in run support and had to run like a scalded dog to catch up with Hester. That shouldn’t be the case.
…spend a lot of $$$$ for a free agent cornerback.
Lito Sheppard?

I think Stujo want''s to put Lito to bed...
I could be wrong about who has the man crush on Lito Sheppard. Am I right, or was it someone else?

Just when I think I’ve discredited Lito and it’s a closed subject, up he comes again.

MT, what are you doing here?
That hook was baited for stujo. What, are you his food taster now?
Actually, I’m not on the Lito bandwagon. I just know how to push buttons. But still, remember the main point: NOBODY excels in our system. The system needs to change; and if it does, depending on how it changes, we may see Jason David blossom. Maybe even Josh Bullocks (that would be quite a damning commentary on Gary Gibbs). So, why not Lito as well? It’s not out of the question.

It's all about pressure on the QB
if the defensive line puts pressure on the qb, any average CB or S in the league can get the job done. When we had Swilling, Jackson, Johnson, Mills and that great defense, every one remembers their names-o one remembers the names of the DBs. The job was getting done up front then, it;s not now. Don’t get me wrong, we need some CBs and S thru FA or the draft, but I have no confidence in WS or CG to put pressure onther QB- we need to unload them, change the defensive scheme and become an aggresive defense known for QB opressure and live with the feww times the blitz package causes you to get burned

Good point
The Saints are the sort of quick-strike, TD-from-anywhere-on-the-field team that can overcome an occasional big play. The problem with our defense isn’t that they give up big plays—which they do—but that they give up sustained drives as well. They are almost incapable of getting stops when they’re needed.
If you give up a 90-yard touchdown, but also get 4 sacks and 2 interceptions, you’ll win. If you give up a 90-yard touchdown, get no sacks, no turnovers, and roll over for 5 sustained drives all resulting in scores, you won’t. It’s not big plays that kill us, but the fact that almost every offense we play scores enough to force us to win shootouts.
Three years of deteriorating results is enough. Replace Gary Gibbs!

I say
We just draft a safety. I’m talking a first rounder safety. I want a badass back there. I want a guy thats gonna HIT. I want to see running backs get LAID OUT as soon as they take a step past our linebackers. I wanna see wideouts coming across the middle just so i can see their helmet fly. We need someone mean. I’d say vilma and fujita are our only defenders that are actually aggressive enough to be defenders. Our defense needs heart. our front 7 has a man with a huge heart running around in a 51 jersey. I think it’s time to get our defensive backfield some of the same.
After that of course we’d need a DC who could find his own ass.

fruly, you been reading my stuff? That’s what I want. Not to get anyone hurt (unless I put a bounty on them), but your defense has got to earn some respect. Cause some tentativeness. Get the ears perked up for footsteps. Make them take their eyes off the ball too soon. I don’t see how you can be a champion without all this to some degree. Otherwise you’re Don Coryell.
OK, everyone start looking for free safeties. Let’s take nominations.

Taylor Mays from USC and William Moore from Missouri seem like two good safety prospects… -Brian, Waveland, Miss.

I think
we can put our collegiate prejudices aside if he makes plays like those for us. M-E I feel the same way. The first priority is coordinator. I am 100% certain that our defense could be a GOOD defense as it is player wise with a good coordinator. I don’t put much blame on the guys on the field for our defense’s troubles.

seems like a lot of agreement here
seems like everyone agrees we need a new DC with a new scheme and approach. KK has to go, Ellis, Pressley, Vilma, Fujita stay. I think Harper should stay- he is still young and missed one entire year. He is very athletic (even though his hands are not so great) but he will definitely be a better player with a pass rush. Seems a concensus that McCray stays- seems to me Jeff Charleston earned an invite back. I seriously would like to get rid of Grant and Smith, but that’s just me and I also don’t know anything about the dollars and cents and cap aspect of cutting them loose. Getting rid of one or two of them sends the message that even though you get a big contract doesn’t mean you can be a slacker. Simomeau could be back, but a) he wasn’t really a standout to begin with and 2) I think he is getting older and coming off of back surgery. But, he could be important as a 3rd down linebacker as I think he is better than Shanle in coverage. Shanle should also be traded or relegated to a sub. I hope these next 2 games Payton plays Dunbar to find out if he has potential- I think he does. Anybody know anything about Chris Reis? I think they should play him vs Detroit and see if he’s got anything. Worse that can happen is we lose and get a better draft pick (and get laughed at by the rest of the country!!)

Teddy Kider Times-Pic chat today
the Saints usually avoid the huge mega-millionaire deals that can really keep you from signing any other players. Expect another offseason like last year, when they brought in Vilma, McCray, Gay (then Shockey late) and re-signed most of their own core guys.
It all depends on how they have these guys rated in their scouting department and if they really think they’re worth breaking the bank. I know they love CB Nnamdi Asomugha, if he becomes available.
“They” being PayLoo???
