Sean Payton on Long Leash?
This one ought to get everyone fired up this morning. Check out this article that Mike Florio wrote for The Sporting News. Florio thinks Payton's head coaching performance ought to land him on the hot seat but thanks to his situation with the Saints and memories of the magical 2006 season his job remains secure. He sites numerous mistakes such as the curious drafting of Robert Meachem, Reggie's under-performance, and a bad Shockey trade.
Florio doesn't hold back. Here are some of the highlights:
The only problem? For now, no one in New Orleans has even begun to whisper the possibility that Payton might not be laying the foundation for eventual enshrinement in Canton, Ohio. It's more than just the won-loss record; because GM Mickey Loomis isn't a traditional "football guy," Payton has more input than many coaches regarding personnel.
In any other city, Payton would be looking for a landing strip with another team, like the one he found in Dallas when he was about to be fired in New York. In New Orleans, however, there's no sign Payton is in any trouble.
Regardless of how Payton goes about attempting to make his mediocre team better, he'd better have a good plan. Memories of that magical '06 season will last for only so long, especially if the other three NFC South teams continue to separate themselves from the Saints.
So what do you think? Is Florio saying what we're all feeling? Or is he way off base - as he sometimes is - on this one?

I Think He Knows What Is Going On
He seems like he is spot on in regards to the situation with Payton. But that could change during the first half of next season rewal quick.

Real sloppy writing
First of all, Florio hasn’t been paying the close attention he implies. Plenty of people have been criticizing not just Payton, but also Loomis and the entire coaching staff. But since very few national readers are familiar with what local writers—or the fan base—have to say, Florio will skate in exactly the same way he claims for Payton.
Second, he obviously doesn’t understand the details of the Shockey or Vilma trades.
If ex-Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma participates in 85 percent of the defensive snaps (he has started all 14 games) and if the Saints sign him to a contract extension, the Saints would have to send to the Jets the second-round pick currently earmarked for the Giants.
Only if they’re stupid enough to extend Vilma before he reaches free agency. Trust me, the Saints pay attention to contract details—they’re not going to re-sign Vilma on Tuesday if they know that by waiting until Thursday they pay less for him.
Thirdly, he entirely misses the important point about Shockey, the one that explains his (relatively) low production: his injury history. He hasn’t been a chronic malcontent in New Orleans so far; he hasn’t been a locker-room cancer, and he certainly hasn’t—and in fact, has never in his career—made Plaxico Burress look good by comparison. He’s simply missed a lot of game time, and that’s why he has only 45 catches. But you know what? If he plays the next two games, and makes his average thus far, he’ll end up with 53 catches on the year. His career average is 59. The Shockey trade may indeed have been a bad one (I think it was, because of his injury history), but people need to stop blaming Shockey for it.
Then there’s the curious case of Robert Meachem. I agree that he was a strange draft choice, given the team’s other needs. He looks to be heading the way of another highly-touted Tennessee receiver who just never seemed to pan out: Donte Stallworth (although Stallworth got a lot more playing time to prove himself before being sent packing). But to suggest that a team in dire need of secondary and linebacker help should have taken a tight end instead of a wide receiver suggests that Florio is trying more to polish his indictment of the Shockey trade than construct a reasonable winning scenario for the Saints. Thank God we have Payton instead of Florio in charge.
And lastly, Florio gives Payton (or Loomis) no credit for what’s been done right. And that includes: signing Drew Brees, the best signing in Saints history; finding Marques Colston in the seventh round, Jahri Evans in the fourth, Pierre Thomas and Lance Moore as free agents; and for turning Billy Miller into the equivalent of Jeremy Shockey in the offense (another reason the Shockey trade was bad—it was unnecessary). And, of course, signing Vilma, who is worth a first-rounder.
Florio, like almost every journalist, wants you to believe he knows something you can’t know simply by virtue of his profession. That way, you have to rely on his judgment. But don’t. We know a hell of a lot more about all this than he does.

Few things
1) The Shockey trade happened to get a TE that we did not have the year before with Miller and Johnson. Neither of the two did anything the year before.
2) Meachem was a highly rated WR coming out of college, who was a luxury pick at 27. Joe Horn was gone, so to be able to get a potential #1 WR to come in and contribute was a good thing. Henderson was underperforming, Copper and Jamal Jones certainly weren’t capable #2’s, so I agree totally with the pick.
3) Like you said, look at what he has done.
It sucks saying IF this and if that, but losing McCallister last year hurt us, and the ass load of injuries hurt us this year. If they hadn’t, there’s no telling where we could have gone this year.
My beef with Payton is the Gibbs issue, and that’s it. and Jason David

M-E, all warmed up and cranking it out; rec'd it
M-E wins this debate. Anyone wish the Saints had never hired Payton? Anyone? Hello… last call…. OK then. Now imagine this: Newsflash, Loomis fires Payton and all of his staff today, starts search for new coach, Bill Cowher declares adamantly that he is NOT interested. Everybody happy? Looking forward to the future and eager to forget the past? yeah.
Payton SEEMs to be changing his ways, some of them. Put Mike Florio on the list of jokers that we lord it over when we have our day. He’s from back east, btw.
Mike is a practicing lawyer in his spare time… Mike resides in West Virginia…
Nice.

"Mike is a practicing lawyer..."
I think he needs more practice.
Thanks for the rec.

A laugh
I know what the sporting news is, but not familair w/their writers, seems like a pot stirrer, all the real news about the saints are on the streets of N.O., once and while Mort or Clayton get it but they get their stories from the horses mouth. Playcalling one thing ,injuries are another ,patchwork secondary got off the field in important games but offensive p/c nixed it,GRAMATICA lost a couple, 3rd or 4th and inches here or there. Prevent D on the last drive in regulation @ Bears. Still glad we have SP,we could be 5-9 w/ Brunell taking the snaps. peace and Who-Dat………

Payton certainly has
made a lot of mistakes this year & last year. I think the team is under-perfoming too but we’re still going to be .500 this year. A winning record one year, and a .500 record this year in a really tough division isn’t bad. We sting only because there were a few games that slipped away that really shouldn’t have. So I don’t think we fire him this year (I hate the 3 year coaching carousel present in the NFL nowadays) and see what he does next year.
Now, if we lose to the Lions and don’t end up .500…well, then Payton is definitely on the hot seat for 2009.
I'm proud of my damn strong football team. Have a great day!
