It's never too early for mock drafts
Anyone familiar with this site?
It's a mock draft aggregator. So far, with the season not even over yet, he's collected 94 mock drafts, including his own. It's fascinating to see the thought processes of people who aren't approaching this as long-suffering Saints fans.
Here's a sampling of who we should draft, and why:
- RB Chris Wells--because both Deuce and Pierre will be gone. (??)
- OLB Brian Cushing--to complement Jonathan Vilma, or provide the anchor for the linebacking corps if Vilma departs.
- OLB Aaron Curry--because our run defense is our weak spot. (???)
- TE Jermaine Gresham--because Shockey is a bust.
- ILB Brandon Spikes--because Vilma will be gone...and if he stays, they can make him an outside backer. (???)
- CB Vontae Davis--because the Saints still need a standout corner.
- S William Moore--because the secondary needs a true impact player. (!!!)
- ILB Rey Maualuga--because he's the best available defensive player and they can always shift Vilma outside.
- DT Sen'Derrick Marks--because...hell, I don't know.
Everyone seems to assume Taylor Mays will be long gone by the time we pick (except for one guy who gave us ILB James Laurinaitis--who was eaten alive by LSU--while he still had both Mays and Moore on the board), and if that's the case I say go with Moore. But I could live with Curry or Cushing, too.

I'm liking this one
CB Vontae Davis—because the Saints still need a standout corner.
Rotoworld.com:
Illinois CB Vontae Davis has decided to forgo his final season in college and declare for the 2009 NFL Draft.
Davis (6’0/204) has great size for a corner and hits like a safety, so it’s possible he’ll change positions in the pros. Vernon’s little brother, Vontae is expected to be a late first-round to early second-round pick in April.

I'm scared to draft corners if Gibbs is still here...
His schemes suck but I guess if you’re good you’re good and it doesn’t matter.
Don't worry I got your back cuz...
And I really don't think Shockey is a bust...
injury prone but I think he’ll be great next year. He made some great possession catches for us this year. I noticed we don’t throw too often to tight ends in the redzone so, hope he’s not looking to score.

Rashard Johnson...
I like the Safety from Alabama and I think he could be available in the third round when we get to pick again… If we could pick him up and a good OLB for our first, I think we might be sitting pretty. I like Moore alot, but I wouldn’t be broken hearted if we get Johnson and a good OLB instead.

and if he's not available....
maybe we can trade for it… what we can trade, I have no clue!!!!

Everything is dependent
on the free agent market, frankly. Hell, we might get all our needs through signing free agents. But supposing we don’t—supposing that we sign our own free agents (like Vilma and Pierre Thomas, although I believe he’s restricted this coming offseason), and don’t sign any free agents from other teams—I still think the biggest need to address in the draft is safety. Not a good safety—a potentially great one. Mays and Moore both look like they could become that, though I haven’t paid enough attention yet to have a real opinion.
I don’t know anything about Johnson.
Three years of deteriorating results is enough. Replace Gary Gibbs!
Rashad Johnson
Is going in the second round. Write that down. I guarantee it. Only way we have a chance to get him is if we trade up or back.
Vilma?
I don’t know if I’m missing something, but why would we let Vilma go? He is one of the very few bright spots on our defense.
exactly right
I’m sure the Saints will re-sign him. I think he likes in New Orleans and there is plenty of cap room.
By the way, when was the last time a player said he hated the Saints and couldn’t wait to get out of town, in order to sign with any other team? Anybody?
draft picks
if we resign we lose a higher draft pick.
If we let him go and then sign him as FA we dont.
