A sort of rambling eulogy

8-8. Sports limbo. Even 7-9 is better than this...at least it represents definite failure. But splitting the schedule into two even pieces...it feels as though this season never really happened. As though the Saints are some sort of disembodied shade haunting the NFL. Half of our opponents obviously didn't believe in ghosts.

Of course, there are questions to ask and comments to make in the wake of this slow-motion skid into the bayou. In no particular order, here are mine:

  • Did anyone see a weird parallel between the Saints and what happened to Dallas this year? "The most talented team in football," so they claimed...and they crashed and burned. It was obvious that the Cowboys, for all their talent, don't play as a team. Is that the Saints' problem? Recall that Payton and Gibbs both came directly from Dallas.
  • Speaking of Gibbs: he has got to go. Giving up three miles on the ground to DeAngelo Williams is bad enough; but when the game is on the line in the fourth quarter, you know Jake Delhomme is going to go long to Steve Smith. Bushmen know that; New Guinea headhunters know that; plankton know that. Only Gary Gibbs and his defense seem utterly clueless. And the solution is so simple: do not, under any circumstances, allow Steve Smith to get loose behind your secondary. If you have to assign a man to stick to him like glue, do it. If it takes two, do it. Three? Do it. Don't let Steve Smith get open deep. So what do we do? We let Steve Smith get open deep. Again.
  • Payton might follow Gibbs; if I were in Tom Benson's position, he would. I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger. We need a top-notch head coach, not someone who can put together the best offense in the NFL and happily tinker for three seasons while the rest of the team falls to pieces.
  • Here is a quote from a story about Romeo Crennel, who has just been fired by the Browns:
Crennel had three years left on a contract extension he signed in January after the Browns went 10-6 and just missed the playoffs."
A newly-signed contract extension isn't bulletproof protection. Payton ought to be sweating bullets.
  • Since introducing their all-black uniforms at (I believe) the San Francisco game in 2006, the Saints are 7-8 in those unis. They're not only ugly, they're losers. We need to make a new start in 2009; and however trivial it may seem, having a uniform change can't hurt. Let's stop playing in leotards, please.
  • Jeremy Shockey is a bust. And before anyone complains that I'm kicking the man while he's down, I hasten to point out that he's down, and that's the point. And when he's healthy enough to start, he is nowhere near as effective as half of the tight ends in football. One of the reasons, I am sure, that the Giants allowed Shockey to depart is that they felt Kevin Boss wasn't simply a decent replacement, but a better player. They were right; Payton and Loomis were wrong. They should be running the Fed, or a car company.
  • Drew Brees is the greatest victim in Saints history. He's set to become the new Archie Manning, but with much better stats: the best offensive player, by far, that ever donned black and gold, but dragged down by the talentless hacks he plays with and for. I feel like we should apologize for signing him.

Okay, rant mode over. Now: how to fix it? First of all, Payton most likely isn't leaving. Neither is Loomis. But Gibbs must go. If he stays, don't look for any improvement at all--its a sign that the guys at the top are not willing to accept consequences. But even if Gibbs does go, there's still a lot of work to be done.

It starts with a defensive coordinator who believes in attacking. There are plenty of good, young, eager, and highly competent defensive assistants who would love the opportunity to improve the Saints. We're not Detroit; we're not Oakland. We're not the team where careers go to die. Let's find the right man and give him the same support that was given to Payton to construct the best offense in the league. (That means, in part, that Payton himself gives the DC a free hand.)

We also need a change in attitude. We need for the players to know that they may not play week in and week out with their heads up their asses. Tackle the damn ball carrier. Cover the receivers. If you give up a catch, knock the hell out of the receiver. Punish the offense on every play. Every. Damn. Play. Those who take plays off can take their uniforms off. Go drive a beer truck or something. That goes for you, Will Smith. You too, Charles Grant. Forget those fancy gold-plated contracts you signed...there's this thing called "cut" that we'd like to introduce you to.

To get that change in attitude, players need to know two things: first, that their starting jobs are on the line every week. Second, that their contracts may be on the line as well. (And a third thing, too: that the coaches are going to be held to the same standard. That's why Gibbs must be cut loose.)

Finally, we have to get smart and aggressive in free agency. Time and again I read that the Saints "traditionally" tend to go for the middle-rank players instead of the high-priced stars. That's smart, if you're trying above all to save money and just get by; if you're trying to build a championship team without the draft picks you traded away, it's the definition of stupid. We need linebackers. We need safeties. We need defensive ends. We need a totally new defense, and we're not going to get one with but a single first-day pick. That means the free agent market; and that means that Payton and Loomis are going to have to be smarter than they've ever been, and that Benson is going to have to open the pocketbook.

Do these things and we have a fighting chance. Next year. Again with the "next year." Oy gevalt.

Nice post. Not buying all of it.

Dallas? No. Some coincidences. These 2 teams are nothing alike, particularly in the character of the players. Except maybe Reggie. Saints had the #1 offense in the NFL. If he had backtracked and starting running more earlier, would you relent? I don’t know how much better we can get there.

I think Pope Benson is going to write up a special dispensation and allow Gibbs cast off in divorce. And I think the leash on Payton will be tightened. He’ll still call plays, but Loomis will have to go get a good defensive coordinator. Fire Payton? And replace him with who? We need to stick for now.

My wife likes the black on black jammies. I’m OK with the new jersies, especially if they have some Denver mojo in them.

I think PayLoo and possibly Benson (and Rita?) have been charmed by Shockey just like he did the Giants owners and he’ll get a chance in 2009. If he flops again he’ll be cut.

I feel bad for Brees too. As has been said here, we’re wasting his optimum years. His arm isn’t going to get any stronger.

Absolutely agree on the D. We need a Colts style D, flying to the ball, hitting everybody hard including the QB and the wideouts right up on the line. That may take time to build but we’re not getting anywhere as it is. That would be scary, this offense and the Colts defense? Wow.

Do you remember when the Colts' defense was a joke?

Such a shame…the greatest offense in the game, but Peyton Manning will never win a championship with that defense.

Then they got better. A LOT better. It took all of two seasons. We can do it, too, and before Brees is finished…but only if we start NOW. And gibbs (I’m spelling it in lower case from now on) is not the man to run it.

I don't want to read a retrospective article 3 years from now

in which Payton admits that it was his biggest mistake hitching his wagon to Gibbs as his DC (like we read this year from Haslett in regard to Brooks as his QB).

Let’s go get some hard-hitting, good tackling, take-no-prisoners players for our secondary!!

And I read today that Yasinkasas thinks that Roman Harper and someone else are the only ones who should keep their jobs on our D

Roman Harper? Safe in his job? I’m sorry.

But he whiffed HARD on two big pass plays (one against Atlanta in Dec. and the one yesterday vs. Steve Smith) that seemed inexcusable to me. On both he was in position and step-for-step with the receiver, but somehow mistimed his jump or slipped or something, but he ended up horizontal to the ground, swinging wildly, and then falling away from the receiver as the crucial catches were made. What good does it do us for him to blow plays like that when he’s in perfect position to AT LEAST prevent a catch? I mean, on those plays he looked like the undersized Usama and JD bouncing off the big receivers with height advantages. Does anyone else remember these plays?

And then with all those interceptions that went right through his hands this season…talk about GAK!!!!!

No sense showing up next year if Gibbs is still there - I mean it

We need to get rid of Gibbs, certainly. I also would like to get rid of Grant and Smith or at least one. I’ll take my chances with anybody, but those two have deploreable stats. I think our linebackers are pretty good, especially Vilma and Fujita- get another one to replace Shanle. Get new DEs, keep our DTs and keep Harper, Mackenzie and Porter. upgrade the rest. They should have played Reis and Dunbar a lot in the last 2 games to see if they were any good. Now it’s a guessing game.

Cowboys' analogy

Roman Harper is our version of Roy Williams. Above average versus the run. Good covering tight ends. But get him out in space or against a WR, he is toast. That our strong safety has had to spend so much time deep helping our #4, 5 and 6 corners who have started the last few weeks speaks volumes about the ability of those 4,5 and 6 corners. Who is our ball-hawking free safety again?

McKenzie and Porter are starters if they get healthy, Gay is a nickel, Glenn is too old but maybe serviceable for 1 year, Usama is a good special teamer but I cant see him as anything else. Jason David just flat can’t get it done, much as I root for the guy. He tackles well, but if he wouldn’t let the receiver behind him, he wouldn’t have to tackle so much. You can point to JD’s 5 INTs, but anyone who is thrown at that much will find an acorn now and then. I’ll bet his ratio of 20 yard passes given up to INTs is still near tops in the league.

If Will Smith and Charles Grant lose their pending court case (which is very, very possible), won’t it be hard for Saints to keep both knowing they are sitting out the first quarter of the season? Seems Grant may have sealed his fate in such a scenario by not simply taking the suspension while he was hurt. I know he’d lose the cash for those games, but can’t you live on the salary he gets for 3/4 of season? This scenario hurts Deuce as well if the court case doesn’t end up well, as teams won’t want to sign him as free agent if he is unavailable for first 4, assuming Saints cut him loose which seems inevitable.

Finally, Cowboys will be looking to sign Bush when his contract in New Orleans ends, as he won’t be resigned. Think Reggie will stay in New Orleans for less money than his rookie deal? Think the Sainst will offer Reggie more than his rookie deal? Think again. Cowboys will need some juice for the new stadium when T.O. leaves in 2011. Think Raghib Ismail.

Look forward to the offseason coverage. Just wish it wasn’t the offseason already.

Brees has many more great years ahead

I keep reading that we need to get it done now while Brees is in his prime. I agree that Pay-loo needs to find whatever way necessary this off-season to strengthen the team for a SB run, but I see no indication that Brees’ performance will taper off within the next five years or so. His greatest attributes are his intelligence, his accuracy, and his hard-working, single-minded focus during the practice week to perform well on Sundays. His arm is strong enough but it’s never been considered one of the strongest in the league. He’s only 29 now and I see him playing supremely well for probably another decade at least, providing that Payton stays committed to protecting him at all costs by keeping the O-line strong. When you see guys like Favre, Jeff Garcia, Kerry Collins, and others playing well with gray hair and the smell of Ben-Gay ointment all over their bodies, you have to think that someone as dedicated as Drew Brees will be able to do the same when the time comes.

Go Saints!!!!

Saints have to have urgency nonetheless..

I agree with you that Brees has more years left, but you still have to have a sense of urgency. We won’t have the top-ranked offense in the NFL for 5 years- it just won’t happen – the NFL is just too competitive for it. But we could have it for a year or two more. What I don’t want to see is that it takes 3-4 more years to get a decent defense and by then the offense is receding and we go to 8-8 again because we just have enough to be mediocre once again.
Next season, even though the schedule is tough, is perhaps the second or third best chance the Saints have had in their entire history to go to the Superbowl, 2006 being a great missed opportunity as well as this past season. The Saints have to upgrade several positions on defense and strike now.
