Brees could have gotten it :(
I was watching the game like I always do and remember thinking; it sure would be nice if Brees had a chance. 400 plus yards against Carolina, I thought it couldn’t happen because our D is so bad especially on third down therefore figured Brees and the offense wouldn’t have the opportunities to be on the field enough to throw for that much. Then the game continued and the Saints fell behind by 20 and I was convinced they wouldn’t pull it out. I wasn’t too disappointed because I thought it would have been a long shot for them to win anyway. Carolina was playing to keep their season going, the Saints, for only a winning record. Then the forth quarter. The defense made a few stops and the offense caught fire. Brees needed 169 yards at the start of the forth. A touchdown pass to Meachem and the Saints close the gap. Then can you believe it, the D began to play like they wanted to win the game and more importantly, give Brees the chance to get his record. They get the ball back and Brees throws a touchdown via Moore. It was at this point, I noticed Brees only needed 61 more yards and there was over 5 minutes left in the game. I thought hell yea, he’s got a shot and then realized the Saints have a shot at pulling a win out. Then the D does it again, can you believe it, get the ball back to the offense and Brees throws another touchdown to Moore. Only 16 damn more yards, that’s all he needed to get and there was over 3 minutes left at that point. I thought he’s going to get it, yes he is going to get it and the Saints are winning the game 31-30. This Sunday was at that point the best day and I was hugging my girlfriend then thought about something and got instantly sad. Carolina can work the clock, move down the field and get into field goal range and leave the saints with no opportunity to get the ball back thus no win, no record. I went from being so happy to so sad in only a few seconds. I then thought that with the Saints defensive play as of the last quarter, they may stop them. But I then began to think with my head and not with my heart. I figured the best shot the Saints had to not only win the game but to also give Brees plenty of time to work a 2 minute drive, get 16 tiny little yards, and possibly score a touchdown to win it was to let Carolina score a quick touchdown. I know it sounds terrible and I am sure no coach could even think that way, but face it, Carolina had a killer run game, only down by one point, has a good kicker, and our D just usually seems to fall apart on third down especially protecting a lead in the fourth so Carolina could easily milk the clock and get the win with a field goal ending the game. I figured doing this would have put the score at 37-31 Carolina and left at least 2 minutes on the clock with Carolina kicking off to us. Carolina would never try for an on side with less than two minutes in the game and having the lead, and especially with knowing how good Brees and our offense was. They couldn’t risk giving good field position to the Saints so they would have kicked it deep. Brees would have thrown at least one or two completions in that drive passing the 16 yards and getting the record and with the way he can work magic, probably rolled down the field and gotten a touchdown using all if not most of the time left putting the score at 38-31 Saints. Win and record ! would have been great but at least Brees would have gotten his record for sure. So what happen, exactly what I thought, Carolina milked the clock by not only running but throwing a pass between two defenders to a well covered receiver (where have we seen that before). Defense as I feared couldn’t get it done and left the Saints down by one with only one damn second left on the clock. I told my girlfriend I couldn’t believe it, to come this close and the man doesn’t get another shot. Then it was like the Saints guardian angle intervened and the kick off goes out of bounds leaving one second. I looked and my girlfriend and said yes, he has the chance to throw one more pass. 1 Damn second, I’m thinking screw the win, a hail marry will more often than not turn into an interception of an incomplete. Throw a short pass and get the record. Then I saw how Carolina lined up defensively. Corners and safety near the end zone. linebackers lined up deep. There was a gap between the D line and the rest of the defenders of at least 20 or more yards. I remember telling my girlfriend that he just has to throw a short 15 hell even a 10 yard pass to a receiver over the middle who will run forwards until he is tackled by a defender but will definitely get 16 damn yards. Then I see Brees throw a deep pass of like 25 or 30 yards to a receiver near coverage. Damn my heart sunk, they lost and Brees didn’t get it. Why damn it why. It seems like this team and all us fans got to be destined to enjoy a Super Bowl winning season soon because we have had too much disappointment and heartbreak. Enough is Enough, please God have mercy!

what they should have done
they should have gone 9 in the box, played zone pass defense, go for the interception and if no interception, let carolina score by pass and come back and try to air it out for another score.

No
What they should have done is make sure Steve Smith doesn’t get open deep. Everyone in the first, second, and third worlds knows that Jake Delhomme is going to try to hit Smith deep…everyone, apparently, but Gary Gibbs.
Three years of deteriorating results is enough. Replace Gary Gibbs!

nah, it was taken on the field before the last Atlanta game. Got field passes and was able to get my son on the field with me before the game to see the players, not sure who enjoyed it more, me or him lol.

i firmly believe
that brees put that last ball into the turf on purpose. brees has been pretty consistent in saying that breaking the record meant nothing if the team didn’t win. the way he had been throwing the ball all day, it seemed a little odd to me that he missed his target by that much. at that point, it was obvious they werent going to score: brees doesnt have an arm that will put the ball in the air for 60-70 yards, so i believe he just tossed it away rather than pad his stats in a losing effort.

I can't agree
I don’t think Brees is the type of person to tell himself there’s no possibility of scoring. I think he was trying to win the game—and simply threw a bad pass. It’s too bad that he missed the record and the win both on what may have been his worst pass of the game, but that’s the way it goes.

and from what I read today,
Brees said that the last play was too far for a hail-mary into the end zone, so it was improvised on the spot, and the receivers were supposed to run 20 yards and then turn around and Brees would try to get it to whoever was most open or in the best position to run and lateral, etc., much like the River City Relay from a few years back. But either Drew threw it too early, or Moore didn’t turn around in time…anyway for a play they hadn’t practiced or anything, the chances of it flopping were pretty good. Oh well, let’s enjoy the playoffs as much as we can, and focus on FA and the draft, and look at the list of once-proud DCs who got head coaching jobs, failed, and are now fired and looking for work…(Crennel, Marinelli, Nolan, etc.)

My vote is Nolan
I don’t entirely trust Crennel (he worked for Belichick, and I wonder how much it was Belichick running the defense and not Crennel). I don’t entirely trust Marinelli, either…0-16 has to count for something. But Nolan has experience running one of the best defenses in the NFL—a 4-3 defense with a dynamic middle linebacker as its chief playmaker. Unless Marvin Lewis becomes available—and maybe even then—I think Nolan is the best choice among the former head coaches.
I still find Sean McDermott of the Eagles a fascinating possibility, though—especially since he’s a secondary specialist, and it’s our secondary that is most in need of a fix.

Would he feel comfortable with a man with head coaching experience?
Frankly, my dat, I don’t give a damn. Sean Payton’s comfort level isn’t my highest priority right now.

oh, that's been clear from the get-go, my exiled friend
I was just saying it in regard to Payton’s possible willingness to go after mcdermott

Sean Payton may not have a choice
The Bensons and Mickey might demand someone like Sean McDermott against Sean Payton’s wishes. These coaches don’t have to like each other, or even speak to each other. Again, think of Ditka and Buddy Ryan. Despised each other but won a Superbowl. And I’m ok with that.

I agree
I like Nolan. He seems like a knowledgeable guy and if Payton can give him free reign over the defense, I think this guy could make some positive improvements; He was a defensive back in college I think (possibly safety) so he’s gotta know something about secondary play. He also has ties to Louisiana because he was a one time coach at LSU and his dad was a coach for the Saints (Dick Nolan). Nolan was the defensive coordinator for the Ravens a few years which we all know the Ravens have been known to be a good defensive team. Hell hard to see it being worse no matter who they can get as a defensive coordinator that is unless they keep Gibbs.
