List of Available Free Agents for 2009
We've all been looking ahead to the off-season and already thinking about who the Saints could and should pick up when the free agency period hits. Thanks to MtnExile's nice find, I compiled the list of available free agents this year in an easy to read format.
Feel free to peruse the list and discuss what players interest you the most. Who are you just dying to see the Saints pick up, Nnamdi Asomugha notwithstanding? This ought to stir up some conversation and debate. While the list looks appetizing and and I pray the Saints go on a shopping spree, keep in mind that Christmas is over and they're not the Yankees. Who wouldn't want to see Brandon Jacobs, Ray Lewis and Albert Haynesworth wearing the black and gold next year? But it just ain't gonna happen so let's all be reasonable.
Also note the players on this list who are currently on the Saints roster. Who should be resigned and who should they cut ties with?

Eric Johnson
is still listed as a New Orleans Saint? Is this up-to-date?

last team he played with
He’s definitely free and clear.

Carlos Rogers
I thought Carlos ’I’m Not a Backup to Nobody’ Rogers might have potential until I saw this:

Jesus, we’ve already got Jason David, what do we need with this guy? Both of couple of shut down corners in the popcorn league. Whatever THAT is, Steve.

Vilma or Lewis?
Who would you want?

Ray Ray? Ray Lewis? It scares me to type his name. I think he may be the ultimate badass. But he doesn’t belong on the Saints. Plus he’s getting old. Vilma.

Vilma
Lewis is trouble. He’s a great player, of course; but he’s also a loud-mouthed thug, who can be very much a me-first kind of guy when the need arises.

glad YOU said that, M-E
I’ll bet we end up with Monty Beisel. He’s a Powercat.

Is he fast?
And is he a sure tackler? That’s what we need. What’s a Powercat? Is there a Pink Powercat and a Black Powercat and a Red Powercat?

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that he was any good, just that the Saints would get him
I think Kansas City cut him, he’s a backup at Arizona. He was ok at Kansas State, the Wildcats. Their little logo is that cat head, they call it a Powercat. I grew up 16 miles from K-State and despise them. More personal issues.

Definitely Vilma...
for the reasons MtnExile listed and also because I think age is starting to catch up with him.
Go Saints!!!!

My FA picks
Albert Haynesworth
Nnamdi Asomugha
Karlos Dansby
I guess you have to add Vilma on there since it makes sense to let him go then get him back to save the draft pack.
Do we have the money for them all?

We have plenty of cap room
If i remember correctly. I dont see the titans letting Haynesworth go anywhere, he’s a large part of that defense. I really don’t see the raiders letting asomugha go either, he’s simply too good and they like him alot. If there was a big free agent id want though it would be asomugha. If not him, and more realistically, we should grab Dunta Robinson.
Other than that though i don’t see much that we could use or go after. We should remember how the best teams in the league build thier teams, and it isn’t through free agency. When was the last time the colts signed a big name free agent? or the patriots even? The consistent contenders in this league build around the draft. I say instead of worrying about free agents, we should worry about not trading all our damn picks away :/.

Rec'd
“we should worry about not trading all our damn picks away.”
But, in the immortal words of Tony Stark, “I say, is it too much to ask for both?” We can plug a few holes with free agents without having to give up draft choices. Put a moratorium on trades, enter the sellers’ market judiciously (do the Giants still want Roman Harper?), and stockpile picks for the next draft.

I like
the way Payloo handles the free agency market. No need to sign the most expensive guys. Find cheaper ones that are going to play our system well until there is someone worth spending the cash on. I think Asomugha would be worth the money, except i’m sure even he could look bad with Gibbs telling him what to do.

Haynesworth isn't going anywhere
and the Titans are talking extension with him now. As always, we have plenty of cap room, but as Dave said in the initial post we’d love to have Haynesworth, ray lewis and the guy from the raiders, but it’s not gonna happen.
I still believe we need to trade Bush and living in the Philadelphia area, I think a great compliment to Pierre would be Buckhalter. My only question with that is if another team would give Buck a starting shot. He’s had some knee issues in his career, but they seem to be past him. He is a strong, tough, inside/outside runner who is big and also receives the ball out of the backfield well. Probably not the most significant deal on paper, but it’s one I believe would really help us.

Small flaw
That I must, as a Falcons fan and reprehensible human being, point out.
Jonathan Babineaux just inked a big extension with the Falcons, so he is most certainly not a UFA. Other than that, looks like a good list.
If i had to make some picks for you guys, I’d grab Mike Goff from San Diego and Channing Crowder from the Dolphins. Both solid guys with good work ethics, and Crowder loves the Thundercats. You can’t go wrong.

Are Thundercats like Powercats?
Dave loves him so many Saints he can’t stay away even when he’s in the playoffs.

but what about Voltron, defender of the universe???
Red Lion, Green Lion, Yellow Lion, etc.
And while we’re on it, does anyone remember G-Force/Batlle of the Planets?? Another awesome Asian import of cartoons.
Ahh, the nostalgia of my youth spent watching cartoons on TV…

My wish list
I’m assuming that there is enough cap space for Benson to splurge on three top-priced free agents. Maybe that’s mistaken, but it seems to me we can do it.
Therefore, here’s the babies I would want to find in my king cake this year:
1. Brandon Jacobs. True, we don’t really need Jacobs…but if he’s available, and he wants to come home, grab him. These chances only come along once in a great while.
2. Channing Crowder. Just like Dave said. And he likes the Thunderthighs. Cats, I mean.
3. Dawan Landry. Another Louisiana boy who needs to come home.
It would be great if we could get Asomugha or Robinson. I’d take Asomugha in a heartbeat, but I’d take Dunta in 2.

Landry for sure
he’d be just what the doctor ordered, although I doubt the ravens let him walk. I disagree with Jacobs though. He’s gonna want big bucks and I don’t think we need him that. A bruising back at a much smaller price tag would be good. The nice thing about needing a 3rd/complementary back is that they can be had for less.

Landry and the Ravens
Baltimore has to re-sign not only Landry, but also Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, and Terrell Suggs. Can they afford all of them?

but the Ravens play a 3-4
so, there may be adjustment issues like JD leaving the Cover-2 to join our Gibbs Gumbo…

I don't think that would affect a safety as much
but maybe it would. Then again…maybe we can go to a 3-4. It would require a wholesale turnover of personnel…but can you say “Dome Patrol 2?”

Thanks to M-E, Football's Future, and Saintsational for this
I do believe that the children are football’s future, teach them well, and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside.
I’m watching the bowl games closely to see what kick-a** senior and junior DBs, LBs, and DEs look good on the field and may be popping up in draft magazines that are soon to hit the newsstands.
There’s not really anyone in this Bell Helicopter Armed Services Bowl to watch for, but it’s about to be a 4-point game late in the fourth Q, so it’s got that going for it.
The Detroit Lions are on the clock!
by HansDat on Dec 31, 2008 2:02 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
now we just need to rank these DBs in some way
to see who’s really good vs. the pass, and a good tackler.
The typical DB stat line (int, tacles, assists, etc.) really doesn’t show who is a hard hitter, who’s tall, who doesn’t let receivers get behind him, and who has good strength/tackling technique.

But most important
DO NOT sign a Cover 2 corner and ask him to play man coverage! Call that the “Jason David Rule.”

AGREED to both your points...also, I checked out some of the top DBs on scouts, inc
earlier today, and it seemed the top CBs were just under or right at 6 feet tall (which means they’re probably closer to 5’10"), and the Taylor Mays safety from USC was listed as 6’3" 1/2
I don’t know about you, but I think we need to seek out some taller DBs so they don’t have to climb so many ladders (like usama and JD seem to have to do) to get up for those high passes.

FA Dream List
Nnamdi Asomugha, UFA, Oakland Raiders
Karlos Dansby, UFA, Arizona Cardinals
Draft a FS with the 1st round draft pick. Yes, it is a bit high but it is desperately needed, so draft for the future of the position. Game changing safeties are too hard to come by in FA so get one now!
