Big Chance for the Saints Defense

With the possibility that Ed Orgeron is going to LSU, the Saints have a chance to entirely remake their defense.

First, of course, Gibbs must go. It doesn't much matter what sort of system we install next, since we have so many personnel needs anyway--but can we please install a real system, instead of a reheated mixture of other coaches' leftovers?

But here's the good part: when we hire a defensive coordinator, we'll be able to hire a defensive line coach who actually suits the new philosophy. Then, in free agency, we'll be able to go after players who fit the new scheme. That's the order we need to go: 1. Defensive coordinator; 2. Defensive position coach(es); 3. Defensive players. And that means that not only must Gibbs go, he must go soon.

That's the way it ought to work, anyway. But since this is the Saints we're talking about, be on the lookout for Loomis hiring or promoting a defensive line coach first. If that happens, we'll know that Gibbs isn't leaving...or that he's going to be replaced with MiniGibbs. And instead of having fresh Gibbs Gumbo every week, we'll be eating reheated GG from the can.

Allow me to add as an addendum

The Denver Broncos are in start-over mode. They’ll be bringing in a new head coach, and they have a lot of cap space. And they, like us, are badly in need of a defensive makeover. If the Saints do not act aggressively to fix their defensive problems this offseason, someone else—the Broncos, or another team—will beat them to the punch. Now isn’t the time to stay the course, make incremental changes, and hope for good luck. The offense is set; now bite the bullet and fix the defense, whatever it takes.

If Gibbs Stays there could and should be a huge backlash

I don’t know why they are not going after Spagnolo- he’s one of the young rising stars. I would be happy with almost anyone. I don’t get al the hype about Ogeron and now he is gone- shouldn’t people get hired who are expected to a) do a good job, and b) stay more than a year ot two? I think Saints fans need to do something. Someone started a website RE: fire Gibbs. Maybe we need to start another website “Fire Payton” or Fire Loomis. They need to know that there can be a huge backlash if they don’t do something. Brees is the NFL’s MVP- whether he gets the award or not- we know he is. It is a shame to waste that. It is so hard to get a great QB, very few teams have one. It is a shame to waste it.

You know what might help?

It wouldn’t be easy to organize, and it would have to be organized to a fare-thee-well in order to really work, but it has the virtue of not being negative.

On a given day, all the Saints fans in the known universe order something from the Saints website. When you order, at the very end of the process there is a text input for comments. We all write in the same thing:

“We love you guys…and this is your last chance.”

This demonstrates two things: how much money Tom Benson stands to make off of us…and how much he stands to lose if he refuses to listen.

Spagnolo

no way he leaves NY for anything other than a HC position.

and the Texans have cleaned house defensive-coaching wise and will be looking to bolster their d through the draft and FA

So we’ll have to beat them to the punch, too. Let’s do something soon…

Also: Spagnuolo is up for head coaching positions, I think, so he may not be in the market for another coord job.

The Detroit Lions are on the clock!

Very well put

cpuldn’t agree more. Here’s what I want – a defense that creates fear confusion and carnage – and not in the Saints fan base like Gibbs’

A New Beginning

Great news!! I heard yesterday evening that ol’ Ed is going to Tennessee to work with Lane Kiffin. Let the house cleaning begin!!!

I wouldn't doubt it if

Coach O left because he was tired of GG’s shit. He mentioned to ESPN that he was excited to be able to coach under Monte Kiffin.
I guess coach O would be responsible for some of the D-line play, but Gibb’s ultimately calls the plays doesn’t he? Coach O doesn’t.

How about Tank Johnson? Character issue? Oh hell he's on defense, Payton doesn't give a rip about those guys. Gun trouble? Not as bad as Grant's gun troubles.

rotoworld.com:

ESPN’s Ed Werder confirms that impending free agent NT Tank Johnson will not be retained by the Cowboys this offseason.
This was reported two days ago in the Dallas Morning News. Tank kept his nose clean with Dallas and likely has a better chance of finding a team in 2009 than Adam Jones. Johnson could help a team running a 4-3 defense.

Personally

I have no problem whatever with Tank Johnson. His brushes with the law were limited to possessing a gun (without using it) in the fascist police state of Chicagoland. If he could help us, he’s welcome in my book.
