playoff scenario

This is copied from a post at nola.com

------------------------------------------------------

Here's the saints possible Playoff situation...

Dallas Must LOSE the next two and then beat Philly on the last game..

Philly must BEAT Washington and then lose to Dallas

Atlanta must Lose to Tampa Bay this week..

Oh and the Saints must win ALL three games coming up!!

------

Atlanta needs to lose to TB for the Saints to get a better division record, otherwise we lose tiebreakers if Falcons and Saints both finish at 10-6. Dallas must lose 2 games, otherwise they win tiebreakers with the Saints on common opponents. Philadelphia is a real problem because the tie counts as "half a win", and 10-5-1 beats 10-6 in percentages. For that reason, I think it should be added that Philadelphia MUST lose to Cleveland this weekend in addition to losing to Dallas, then beating the Redskins.

So, this weekend, the Browns have to beat the Eagles, the Bucs have to beat the Falcons, and the Giants have to beat the Cowboys... and of course the Saints have to beat the Bears on Thursday!!  Any other results....fugetta about it.

Gentlemen, let's not complicate matters unnecessarily

The playoffs started Sunday and they continue Thursday. One game at a time.

AGREED

let’s just TCOB on TNF @ SF on NFLN

(take care of business, Thursday Night Football, Soldier Field, NFLNetwork)

Eagles v Browns

Upon further review, It is very complicated at this point.

I think the Eagles can beat the Browns and the Saints would still be alive. Basically: we need this to happen in the NFC north to get better records: Cowboys lose 2 (9-7), Eagles lose 1(9-6-1), and Redskins lose 1 (9-7). I looked at tiebreakers with those teams, and it is very, very complex…down to “strength of victories” is some cases, which would depend on the final games.

Falcons vs Bucs…let’s say the Falcons win. They would end up at 3-3 in the division, same as Saints if they beat Carolina. However, Falcons have one more win in the conference, so would need to lose one of their last 2. If they tie with the Saints in the NFC, then it’s complicated and down to common opponents, strength of victories, etc.

Still, the results outlined above for this weekend would go a long, long way to helping. Otherwise it gets even more far fetched with the combination of losses/victories needed by other teams.

It’s all immaterial if the Saints don’t win out, so stujo4 has valid point. Still, good to know who you are rooting for this weekend.

I have a freak snowstorm that is hanging around just north of the city… I can talk to it and see if it will head on down somewhere..

Another interesting scenario, with Atlanta beating TB this weekend, but losing to Minnesota in week 16. Also Philadelphia wins the next 2, but loses to Dallas in week 17. In this scenario, the Saints play the Bucs in the wild card game!

here is the Saints/Cardinals scenario. Basically, the only thing I changed was TB beating the Falcons, and Falcons winning the next 2.

You can generate your own scenario links using the Yahoo “playoff scenario generator”.

In this one, I projected winners based strictly on current winning percentage, except I have the Saints beating Carolina in week 17.

OK, I’m officially convinced the Saints have a realistic chance, and I’m addicted to this Yahoo tool :P
