Mock Draft Second Round

As you all know, SB Nation is in the middle of running it's mock draft for 2008 and it is being called one of the best mock drafts on the internet. For those of you who don't know, each site represents their team and makes their draft selections. This allows for very educated, team specific picks as opposed to one "expert" picking for every team. And this is your chance to actively participate!

New Orleans' second round pick is coming up shortly, and it's my job to choose for us. But I am opening this one up to you guys. Check out the draft so far at Mocking The Draft to see who has already been taken. After you have made a decision who you want to see the black and gold take in the second round, drop me a line in the comment section and tell me who YOU want to see taken at the 40th overall spot. Just drop a name, or give a detailed explanation why.

We took CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the first round, so if you want to go on the defensive side of the ball, I would look at DT's and LB's. You might also want to consider the TE position. But this is all up to you, so suggest whoever you want. I will pick whoever the outright favorite is.

Some possible suggestions:

  • DT Kentwan Balmer
  • DT Pat Sims
  • TE Dustin Keller
  • LB Curtis Lofton
  • RB Matt Forte
  • S Tyrell Johnson

So who do YOU think the Saint's should draft!?

Balmer

I think what it comes down to is the fact that the Saints will most likely go defensive in both rounds one and two, unless a great offensive player slides. In this case, with already addressing the corner position with DRC in round one, you have to go with Kentwan Balmer in round two. The saints have a pretty obvious need at DT, with two starters who are mediocre and aging fast. Balmer is easily a first round talent and a steal if the saints were to land him in round two. I think it is becoming increasingly known that the Saints will have to take a DT early, (many predict the saints to move up and take Ellis in round one) so with not having addressed DT in round one, round two or three becomes a must. And like I said, Balmer is a steal here  and and will probably be a starter day one.

mayo

I will agree that Mayo is certainly a good player. The issue I have with him is that he is best suited for middle/inside linebacker, which is the position Vilma will fill, as it is Vilma's natural and best position. The question becomes than is if mayo could work as an outside linebacker, which the saints could definitely use.

Balmer

Balmer and Mayo are probably the two best players left at this point for the Saints, and when it comes down to it, they are both first-round talents. Either one would be a steal for the Saints, so the thing to look at is which need is the most important, and I think it's definitely the DT spot. Grant has been underachieving and Will Smith is growing into a star in the league, but on the interior, the D-line is struggling. Balmer could easily fill that need, and his rare athleticism could make him into a star in a few years. I've been keeping up with mockingthedraft since its first day, and I am very pleased with the DRC pick. I think if both Balmer and Mayo and available, Balmer is the choice, but Mayo is certainly a good bet too. I'd like to see how Vilma and Morgan fit in with the Saints this year before we do anything to address the linebacking spot. If they both turn into starters, which is extremely possible, then drafting Mayo would mean replacing all 3 of the starting linebackers, and that might be too much to do in one offseason.

Maybe not Balmer

Well, looks like Balmer isn't an option anymore, the Falcons picked him up earlier today. Mayo is clearly the best player left for the Saints, and if he goes off the board in the next few picks, it'll be tough to decide on the best player.

On the clock
I see that it's time for your pick on mockingthedraft, and I think it's definitely got to be Jerod Mayo, no questions. He's hands down the best player left and fills one of the biggest needs. Thanks for involving us with your pick.
