Open Thread: 2008 NFL Draft Day Two

Sunday 9am/CST  ESPN/NFL Network

Day two of the draft today and I hope it goes as well as yesterday. The Saints gave up their third round pick to the Patriots to get Ellis, but received a fifth round pick, and without a fourth rounder they won't be on the clock until the fifth round, where they have two at No. 146 and No. 164. They have one pick in the sixth round at No. 178 and one pick in the seventh round at No. 218.

As far as the Shockey trade is concerned, I think it's dead. I saw Giants GM Jerry Reese on ESPN tonight and he said a trade wasn't going to happen. Ralph Vacchiano at the NY Daily News wrote this article yesterday and Reese confirmed that at a press conference...

"Jeremy Shockey is our starting tight end, guys" he said. "I’m going to leave it at that. Let’s talk about our draft pick. There’s really nothing to talk about. Jeremy Shockey is our starting tight end and really that’s the end of the story."

This is an open thread, so talk it up. I will join in with you guys.

lsu players

almost all the good lsu players are gone.  I like the idea of picking winners who are from the area.  I hope the saints get xenon.

I was hoping for

Jermicheal Finley at TE...oh well.

Bears take Matt Forte

From rivals.com:  "Forte gained more than 2,000 yards in an offense that featured nothing but him in many games. He was also named MVP of the Senior Bowl. If Cedric Benson does not come into camp in shape and ready to perform at a high level there is a very good chance that the Bears just drafted their new starting running back."

Forte will be starting in September, no doubt.  And he will face the Saints at Soldier Field on the Thursday night game December 11.  Guess I have to break down and order NFL Network now.

Kiper says Kellen Davis TE- Mich St

Kiper's #2 best available now.

Poll on saints homepage shows 25% think we should take a TE next, 37% prefer safety.

5th round

I don't know how much like Kellen Davis. I know there is a desire to upgrade at TE, but Davis wouldn't be an upgrade at all and it would seem to me to be a bit of a forced pick. Ideally you draft the best player available at a position you could see as a need. Right now, It looks like Mike Hart from Michigan is still going to be left, and if running back was a concern, in a year, this guy could take over for Deuce to give the Saints an awesome young RB combo. He took a lot of carries at Michigan, and he's been extremely productive. I'd like to see him or maybe Josh Barrett from Arizona State. Ideas?

trade

looks like we gave up our 7th round pick to jump in front of cincy again and draft another DT.  DeMario Pressley - NC State

DeMario Pressley

From rivals.com:  "Pressley is a kid that was rated as a possible second- or third-round pick in the spring, but he has had to battle through some injuries. If he can now stay healthy, the Saints just got a great complement to play next to Sedrick Ellis in years to come."

I just watched his highlight reel on rivals.com.  He's fast.  Looks like Hollis Thomas to me.  Big butt.

Carl Nicks OT-Nebraska

From Rivals.com:  "Now let me start this by saying the word "IF" is more dangerous than any other word in the draft dictionary. But "if" Carl Nicks has grown up this weekend and learned from his past mistakes, the Saints just made one of the best value picks of Day 2. He has left tackle ability after allowing just one sack in two years at Nebraska."

Taylor Mehlhaff PK-Wisconsin

I was just about to post "Hey don't we kind of need a kicker?" but I didn't want to be an idiot, you can always invite kickers to camp.  This guy is a left footed kicker from South Dakota.  What's going to happen when he hits Bourbon Street?  Anyway, Grammatica is one kick away from losing it (his confidence; why don't these guys hire sports psychologists?) and I'll bet this kid takes his job in camp.  For the 178th pick in the draft I guess this isn't too bad.

wow

rivals.com:  "Mehlaff had a private workout for the Saints just a week ago and wowed them with his leg strength, both on field goals and kickoffs."

Pick 237 in the 7th: Adrian Arrington WR Michigan

Rotoworld says:  "Arrington has to be regretting declaring early for the draft; he could've put up some nice numbers in new Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez's spread. This is a nice landing spot, however, with several uninspiring wideouts (David Patten, Devery Henderson, Terrence Copper) on short-term deals ahead of him."  rivals.com:  "Arrington declared early, but failed to impress in postseason workouts. He is a good late-round gamble here by the Saints. Arrington has to mature quickly if he is to have a shot at an NFL career."
