Will the Saints pick up another RB before season?

[Note by Saintsational, 05/05/08 2:41 PM PDT ] This article from NFL.com says that Shaun Alexander will be meeting with the Saints following his visit in Cincinnati.

For the past week, they have been planning to bring Alexander to New Orleans for a visit. It is not hard to understand why.

There are questions about McAllister’s durability, Bush’s ability and Stecker and Thomas in general. Alexander would provide New Orleans with another capable back, a primary every-down back. At the age of 31, the Saints and Bengals are curious to see whether Alexander can still be productive.

In light of these recent events and to help increase discussion, I am promoting this FanPost to the front page. This also shows you what I can do with FanPosts and FanShots, so keep them coming and if they are good, you might find them right there on the main page. Kudos to Celtic Tiger for starting this one! Also props to Stujo4, our resident psychic who called this one, and who also refrained from using a curse word and instead chose to go with "effing." That is important, as we are trying to maintain a level of respectability here at CSC. I leave you with the original FanPost from Celtic Tiger...

Can we stand pat with the inside runners we have?  If you can't effectively run inside, defenses will hedge outside.  The Saints were most effective with both Duce and Reggie healthy. With only one in the game it made the Saints easier to defend. The numbers showed that last year. Duce has to be a question mark. Who is out there that could still be picked up? Rhodes was just released by the Raiders. Will he get a look by the Saints?

I almost guarantee they will have another running back in camp. They have a good mixture of youth and different types of runners and I don’t see anyone they bring in displacing any of those on the roster.

I hear Shaun Alexander is available

Hey, I’m just saying… Saints picked up Ki-Jana Carter and Antowain Smith for their last stops in the NFL, so it wouldn’t be unprecedented. Sean Payton sets his sights a little higher though, so it probably is unlikely.

YESSS!! I am an effing GENIUS!!!! (well, more like "prescient". Shaun is no prize.)

Rotoworld: NFL.com’s Adam Schefter reports that Shaun Alexander, who is in Cincinnati on Monday for a free agent visit, is scheduled to meet the Saints Wednesday.
He could provide competition in New Orleans for Deuce McAllister, who’s recovering from surgery on both knees. Alexander would be a slightly more intriguing fantasy commodity with the Saints, although both teams’ backfields are muddled. Either way, we wouldn’t expect much from the declining back. MY BOY

I just found this SB nation, and FINALLY someone talking about Pierre Thomas. I live in Virginia, not a lot of Who Dats around. I first saw him at last years preseason game vs Miami. I know Miami…whatever. He looked like a senior playing with a bunch of 7th graders. Then the Chicago game. I don’t see any reason to pick up alexander. Wouldn’t hurt, but I think he’ll cost too much.

It's not needed.

They shouldn’t waste their time. If Deuce doesn’t come back or gets hurt, let Peirre take the rains. He’ll be just fine.

Looking at another RunningBack, Shawn Alexander, etc..etc.

I’ll bring this point up because I was thinking about this move when the Saints were getting ready to choose their second pick. I was wanting the Saints to pull the triger on a local guy, Matt Forte from Tulane. With just the fact that Duece’s return to his old form after two knee operations of the major variety plus Duece’s total amount of years and carries that there just so happened to be a very special back sitting there in the second round that physically was almost a duplicate in size and speed as Duece it was to good to pass up. We all came to the conclusion last year that when Duece who (by the way I hope returns 100% because I think the world of the guy…Class act and one of the all time favorite Saints) went down with the injury it hurt Reggie’s and the offense. Reggie was more effective while Duece was healthy.
Well, problem would have been solved with the selection of Matt Forte..6’2”, 222 lbs and someone who could deffinitly run between the tackles and like Duece as big and powerfull as he is would have been getting tired of tackling him late into the fourth quarter, (same as Duece). and paired with Reggie in the backfield would give us that Thunder and Lighting type backfield again.
And Now that Matt is property of the Bears we start thinking of bringing in and looking at runningbacks.
This guy (Matt Forte) who I have watched play since junior High School is going to make a lot of teams regret not drafting him.

I can tell you are a little down about Matt Forte. The good news for you is that we have pierre thomas, so why draft something you already have?

Pierre Thomas

Come on now. He is a back that will be one to deal with for sure, but you are missing my point. Duece has what over Pierre? Size right. That is my point. I am talking about the type of back that fits Duece’s size, speed and will do like Duece did in the 4th quater of the Philly playoff game in the dome. With about 9 minutes to go and the Saints protecting a 3 point lead just flat out ran out the clock. The defense by the 4th quater I am sure gets awfully tired of tackling Duece. As much as I like Pierre, he is more in the mold of Reggie in size. Matt is going to be a pounder, which was my point.
And yes I am a huge Tulane fan. I sure remember some good times we had in the 70’s. It’s a dern shame it’s been so long.

Wow

The 70’s, huh….little before my time, sorry. Anyway, I see your point, and I think that Pierre will fill that 4th quarter void. Although I don’t know of any back in the league that would have had the push that Duece and Co. had in that Philly game, that was truly awesome. I’m going to say that he is going to be the power, he is the thunder, and he will be our clock-eating monster. Even though his more Reggie-like frame suggests otherwise. Watch that guys legs keep churning after contact, ooohhweee I’m looking forward to watching this guy.

I know you wanted Matt Forte, and I wanted Hester(not saying Hester is as good as Forte) but the good news for both of us is that it is the NFL, and just because they aren’t here now, doesn’t mean that won’t be later

Hester!!

I am with ya asaint. Jacob was my favorite. What a beast. I hope the Chargers use him well. I think he will also make his mark in the NFL. He reminds me of two Tigers(maybe before your time as well) damn you made me feel OLD :-( LOL. but Jimmy Taylor and Hokie Gajan. Those two could not be armed tackled or hit up high because they both would run you over. I think the Saints should do a better job of drafting more local talent since they are right under their noses’ for 3 to 4 years of observation. Quite honestly I think I would have like to have had Flynn as well. Not the strongest of arms but great touch on the ball as well as a good decission maker. If everbody remembers I think It was neck and neck between Russell and Flynn for the starting job, so I think the Packers got a steal getting Matt as late as they did.
Later asaint
