Predicting the 53-man Roster: Redux
The team has off today as they make their way back to Metry. Having gotten a clearer picture of just what this team looks like, I thought what better time to throw out another attempt at predicting just who will make this team of 53 and who wont. This, of course, is meant to spark conversation and your input is welcomed and awaited. Where did I go wrong and where did I go oh...so...right? Let us all know what you think about who makes what will inevitably be the greatest Saints team of all-time.

Here is my thinking on some of this:
- Brian Young's health concerns me. If it continues to be spotty, the staff may say to hell with it and go with one of the other talented options in Antwan Lake and Orien Harris.
- I went with Reis over Roach at safety.
- Yeah, I went with six receivers. Copper and Moore both contribute on special teams. Skyler Green was so close I practically flipped a coin for this one.
- I only went with one fullback. We should expect better blocking from our tight ends. Maybe keep another fullback on the practice squad in case Karney is injured.
- Jason David is still around. I just don't think the coaches are going to give up on him. I don't really feel we have seen enough from Tracy Porter, but I gave him a shot anyway.
For a good laugh, compare it to my roster prediction back in May. Also check out how much nicer looking my tables have become. We've come so far.
The floor is now open. Take it away.

I was a little harsh on Campbell back then and I regret that
Wow, I’ve been on CSC since May? I feel I am a much more informed fan due to my time spent here. Can’t knock a guy who’s trying to play when he’s recuperating, even though he gets “shaken up” on every single play when he goes in. Which is why NO WAY should Deuce and McKenzie be in the starting positions. It’s misleading, they are not going to start in September. Rearrange, rearrange. And to repeat my statement from May, “David Patten is WR2??” I think you have to put Meachem there. If AA is on the PUP list, does he count against the 53 man roster? If not, he shouldn’t be on there. And I’m thinking Mehlhaff’s fawning college coach won’t be able to shrink his big head in time and he’ll get the Antonio Pittman treatment. Gramatica as K. God be with us.

I would choose mostly the same list
I can’t see any names I would disagree with. I think Payton will roll the dice on Mehlhaff unless he comes up as very inconsistent during the next three weeks. I still have faith that both Deuce and Mike M. will be ready for the season (call me a crazy optimist if you like). I do agree with Stujo that Meachem may just beat out Patten for the no. 2 spot however. I think Henderson will get cut and will immediately be picked up by the Bucs. Palko may get put on the practice squad so Payton can carry an extra CB (maybe the veteran Aaron Glenn) or an extra WR/return man (Skyler Green).
Go Saints!!!!

What am I missing?
I keep reading Payton say something like this, “When the roster goes down to 46 on game day, all these guys have to be doing something.” What does he mean 46? Is 53 the total number with the practice squad players? I can’t find the answer when I search the NFL site.
Go Saints!!!!

Only five cornerbacks?
By keeping six receivers, you’ve left yourself room for only five cornerbacks; I don’t know if that’s wise, particularly considering that Mike McKenzie is still a question mark. Either Moore or Copper has to go in order to make room for another cornerback (Aaron Glenn?). We have enough offensive weapons.
Speaking of offensive weapons…I think the running backs are solid, but the arrangement should be: Deuce McAllister, backed up by Pierre Thomas, and Reggie Bush, backed up by Aaron Stecker. Bush should not be considered a replacement for McAllister—their talents and styles are too different to expect plug-and-play performance from Bush in McAllister’s place.
I also think Meachem is No. 2 and Gramatica wins the kicker spot.

looks good
i agree with you but MtnExile does make a good point about the CB’s and WR’s. The team definetly has enough O weapons. That might be why SP said he would try JD at returning punts. Maybe to try and keep another CB on the roster?
