Whose in your Five?

Tomorrow is the first round of roster cuts around the NFL. This means the Saints need to trim the fat and cut the team down from 80 players to 75. So the question is...who has to go?

This round of cuts will certainly be easier than the next round, but it's never easy letting players go. Fortunately for us, we're not the coach, so we don't have to make the actual decision! But, in case Payton calls me later this evening looking for my opinion, I'd better be ready with my five players, and here they are:

  1. CB - Greg Fassit
  2. S - Curome Cox
  3. TE - Buck Ortega
  4. DE - Marcus Pittman
  5. WR - Joe West

Don't get me wrong, I could probably have added a few more to the list, ahem, Jason David, but we don't have to go there just yet. I figured with the crowd at CB, WR and TE, at least one from each group is going to go. The rest were tough. Other possible cuts could be TE Ronnie Ghent, OL Rob Hunt, OL Isaiah Ross, OL Brian Stamper, WR Todd Blythe, FB Kevin Dudley, FB Olaniyi Sobomehin, RB Lynell Hamilton, DE Jeremy Geathers, LB William Kershaw and S David Roach.

So what do you guys think? Whose in your five?

Honestly...don't know

I have some very definite ideas about who should make the team, but the order in which the cuts are made is pretty much immaterial as far as I’m concerned. I think, though, that I’d cut Jason David now—not because I think he’s a sorry player, but because I actually think he’s a good player in a system that allows him to play to his talent. Cutting him now will give him a better chance to catch on with another team. (And with the Saints’ luck, he’ll go to Tampa and become an All-Pro. Just watch.)

this round...

doesnt mean much in my opinion. we are going to cut a bunch of people that may or may not go to another teams practice squad.

And MtnExile, I am actually AFRAID to cut JD now… You just have to know he will find a home and burn us if he could.

Easy

I’d build a time machine and go back in time to release Jason David before last season, and while I was at it, Mare as well. Of course, then I’d have to come back to the present to see how my changes had affected the 07 season and the current roster, which I would simply do by reading the Chronic archives. Only then could I make a decision about my final three choices.
