Colston out 4-6 Weeks with Thumb Injury

This sucks! (New Orleans Pro Football)

The Times-Pic has just reported that Saints WR Marques Colston will miss a month or more after having surgery to repair a ligament in his left thumb.

This one hurts as Colston is obviously our best receiver and a huge threat, though he wasn't much of a facor in last weeks game against Sunday. We may now know why. Hopefully his recovery time is on the shorter end of those projections and we see Marques in a Saints uniform by the middle of October. Fortunately we are deep at the wide receiver position and Brees is great at getting the job done by spreading the ball around. I expect this means Meachem will dress this Sunday and make his NFL regular season debut. Our receiving corp as a whole will certainly need to step it up in the coming weeks.

Bummer, but...

This could be a weird sort of advantage for the Saints, depending on how well Meachem plays (I’m assuming he’ll be activated). There’s two seasons’ worth of highlight reels on Colston for opponents to study and prepare for; what do they have on Meachem? Nothing. What can you expect from him? Who knows. How do you prepare to face him? Search me.

Meachem is nearly as big as Colston and as fast as Henderson. He has good hands. He could fill that hole very nicely in the short term. In the long term, he’s got to be the Saints #2, unless Henderson’s catch against the Bucs was the debut of Devery 2.0.

thinking the same thing

Meachem should totally fill this void. The down side is that everyone in the nation seems to know about Meachem—at least that he is good.

On the really down side, my FF team is totally screwed.

Oh Crap!

Well, at least it’s a somewhat minor injury and he’ll be back by midseason. This means Meachem should get some playing time and Devery will definitely get more work and opportunities to prove he can catch the ball consistently. I just added Devery to my FF team, so I’ll go ahead and gamble that he will step up and fill the void left by Colston. Devery 2.0 sounds good to me. Let’s hope he has learned to always catch the ball with his hands instead of his body.

Go Saints!!!!

Dude

Are you kidding me….how man times are you going to let one catch get your hopes up, you’re asking for it. I won’t even feel bad when you are all mad and upset when he drops the next one.

I think the Saint’s should keep playing him, but we have to not get our hopes up that he is going to be Mr. Consistency. He is a big play threat that gets the droppsies, but I’m a homer, so I’ll ride it out as long as the Saint’s do.

risk may or may not lead to reward

I wasn’t trying to imply that I think Devery will all of a sudden become Mr. Big Play TD Catch. There’s still risk involved with him and I’m sure he’ll continue to drop some well-thrown balls. The way I see it is he’ll definitely get more opportunities now and he seems like a better WR possibility for this weekend at least than the other WR I had. I don’t pretend to be a FF expert, so if he turns out to be a bust, I’ll just live with it and learn from the mistake.

Go Saints!!!!

This

is a hilarious post. Funny and true.

we’ll be okay- lots of depth – patten, moore, shockey, henderson, meachem, reggie, pierre, stecker, campbell, they can all keep the passing game very effective and we just have to make sure the ground game works well. high hopes for meachem ….. joe horn is still available for a month or so………….

oh, yeah and i forgot Copper also- nothing wrong with him!! these guys are all very good receivers, true pros…. and with Brees throwing the ball they all have the ability to make GREAT plays!!

Meachem

if the man isn’t even activated for the first game of the season after his impressive preseason why would the injury to Colston equate to more playing time? Either Payton is bitter about last year or Meachem run blocks as good as my 3 year old.

wondering

about this, too. I don’t know what we’re doing with Deuce or McKenzie, either?

I feel exactly like bigT

This sucks a fat 1. Time to man up boy’s. At least we have 1 or 2 or 12 talented players who are hungry

I'm with satch

This “could” be the time for DH to shine but we’ll see. I’m looking forward to seeing Meachum bring it.

Yeah my fantasy team is...

I had Brady and Colston! Obviously I’m keeping Colston. I do have Favre and thank God I started him instead of brady this week, but still, I picked up devery just in case but man. My team is screwed

Rotoworld.com:
Marques Colston (thumb surgery) will be in a cast for four weeks before he is even able to resume practicing.
This seemingly lends credence to John Clayton of ESPN’s report that Colston would probably take six weeks, rather than just a month, to get healthy. Sep. 10 – 5:30 p.m. ET

Sorry but...

…no can do. I won’t get ANY kind of hope up for Devery. I think a pro player in any given sport is blossoming the 4th years into his career. Along the process the player gets better every year, which is not Henderson’s case. And what a shame that is…

The guy is probably one of the top 5 fastest WR in the league and CAN catch a football but, as we’ve seen from the beginning, he’s just plain scared…How could you otherwise explain his stupendous ratio of catches on deep balls over his drops under 10 yds. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not judging the man’s heart. Hell, I’d probably do in my pants too seeing Bob Sanders aiming for me after a short completion!

That beeing said, maybe the coaching staff should consider using him as a special weapon like they start doing again with Reggie.

But the thing that troubles me the most is not undertanding why Sean seems to be holding a gruge against a young man who has done everything to deserve wearing a shirt on Sundays.

by FrenchFreak on Sep 10, 2008 6:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

as far as DH, we can use him to his strength. everytime he lines up on the outside,it’s a concern for the defense. just his speed means that it’s a one on one or the safety is shitting knowing he has to be available to help, that can be exploited. and, although i have been disappointed with him and actually wanted him traded or cut this year, he can and will bean asset, even if he is just a decoy and i think he will be much more than that. he will help patten moore, reggie, shockey, copper and meachum to have more man coverage if Payton plays his cards right. and Meachum will work out and I don’t think Payton has a problem with him, he will be activated and he will play good. The Saints have more weapons that almost any team- maybe every team and most of their weapons know the system for 2-3 years and that wil help. i think it’s more likely that meachum didn’t play because they had so many wideouts with experience who knew the system better than Meachum.

Y'all just stop

hattin on Hollywood Joe “call me in the endzone” Horn. He’s still one of my favorite Saints. He had a bad divorce but Bobby Hebert ended up with the Stank Birds too. Save that hate for D “Drop Man” Henderson. I agree though that anytime he lines up on the end he could be going for a 70 yarder and with Shocky on the other side ain’t no tellin what’s bout to happen. See like my mama say God works in mysterious ways, Who this will really help in the long run is Pierre Thomas. Now they will have to line Bush up as a wide out, bringing in both Deuce and Thomas on some ol bruiser ass backfield like back in the day. How many y’all remember Thunder and Lighting Chuck Muncie and Tony Galbraith? Man we in good shape fa sho ya heard!

by BigTMill on Sep 10, 2008 8:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

BTW

Bobby Hebert is not a top Saint of all time, as proposed by an espn poll. The guy may not have been in the top 5 on his own team. I’m so pissed off about this excessive Hebert hype that is going on nowadays. The guy is cool, he’s from Cutoff which is cooler still, but he was a so so qb.

by xen-cuts on Sep 10, 2008 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I couldn't agree more...

Bobby Hebert is a legend in his own mind…

Any one of the Dome Patrol was better than Hebert.

Growing up, my two favorite Saints were Swilling and Eric Martin. Martin caught EVERYTHING…

by Hollywoo! on Sep 11, 2008 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Martin

I remember Eric Martin being amazing, too! No one ever talks about him so I thought I just remembered wrongly.

My saddest Saints games:
Saints v. Minn in playoffs (1st time around) when vikes won by like 50 points
Saints v. Bears in regular season on the ice, ending undefeated season and somehow shattering momentum
Saints v. Philly in wild card when Cunningham pulled win out of ass

by xen-cuts on Sep 11, 2008 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I should mention

that had Hebert been able to score, I don’t think some of these memories would be so bad. The Dome Patrol was amazing. Should have let them play offense.

by xen-cuts on Sep 11, 2008 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Martin was the second best reciever in the NFC West,

Behind you-know-who…

All of those games you mentioned were bad…That Minnesota game was horrible.

There was one more playoff game you forgot…the loss to the Falcons one year. I can’t remember what year that was, but it was at home, and damn it was crushing…

by Hollywoo! on Sep 11, 2008 8:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Had trouble falling asleep one night, so I tried to recall all the Saints starting QB's

My memory is not great and getting worse. I’ve also blocked out a lot of Saints hurt and disappointment from over the years. But I do remember that I really didn’t care for Hebert that much.

How about John Fourcade? I only remember his name.

I really liked Aaron Brooks a lot. At first. Then it just faded. Too bad again.
This is depressing.
