Shockey out 3 to 6 Weeks with Sports Hernia

In case you thought it couldn't get any worse...

Shockey is out 3 to 6 weeks. See article below:

Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey will have sports hernia surgery this week, a league source said Monday. The Saints' top offseason offensive acquisition will be out an estimated three to six weeks.

It is the latest injury blow to an already depleted Saints roster.

The injury had been bothering Shockey for weeks but it was aggravated in Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos.

South Louisiana Gamblin' at it's best

If you continue to use the lowball mentality of going after previously hurt all stars, it’s a gamble move that you’re going to loose at some point. I mean it’s a numbers game. Breese was hurt when we got him, Vilma, McCray…. So Shokey getting hurt again is what – 1 out of 4. Then you mess around and catch some reality like Colston going out, Stecker out, McKinzie being out and who knows what’s up with Deuce being out, it hurts you even more.

not yet.

we are still better then 1/2 the teams out there and we are missing so many. Smart play and we can still get in the playoffs, once in. with starters back. the team on paper may well be able to do something.

Course if they dont learn how to TACKLE its all a moot point.

"The injury had been bothering Shockey for weeks"

This kinda annoys me. Again with the withholding of information. How the hell did he pass the physical, anyway? Guy tears a pubic muscle and still makes the team? Gets held out of preseason games, hoping that it’ll heal? These things don’t heal without surgery. See Donovan McNabb and Reggie Brown.

Close to the pube but maybe not on it

rotoworld.com:
Jeremy Shockey said his surgery was not technically of the sports hernia variety.
Shockey indicated it was called sports hernia because it was in that general area, but the injury wasn’t quite as serious. That may explain the initial optimistic recovery time table of 3-6 weeks.

more on sports hernias

http://www.footballtimes.org/Article.asp?ID=159

Unlike a standard hernia, a sports hernia does not involved your intestines leaking out through a hole in your abdominal wall into your scrotum. This is a very different injury. The reason it’s called a hernia at all, is because it is often misdiagnosed as a standard hernia, because initially, it presents in the same way.
they are all lumped under the term athlete hernia. The athlete hernia commonly refers to a tear in the abdominal muscles near the groin where various ligaments and tendons attach. It can also refer to a tear in the conjoined ligament which is also located in the same vicinity. Athlete hernia can also refer to tear in any one of the muscles or ligament that are used to pull the leg in towards the body, the adductors.
How does this injury occur? The common mechanism is a player that is hunched over or kneeling forward, almost like trying to touch your knees with your hands, while running. You make a turn or spin and feel a strange sensation in your groin and belly. Usually, the player knows they have done it and usually you know when it happens. You can pinpoint it exactly. In a minority of cases, the injury occurs over time as a wear and tear injury and you may not be able to remember when it happened.

Historically, it was always ice hockey players that had this injury, but now we see it more and more in football.
