It seems Payton is happy to be rid of Orgeron. He says the many calls our former D-line coach was juggling regarding coaching positions over the last month were a distraction that he didn't appreciate dealing with. My only concern now is waiting to see if Payton will try to blame our defensive woes mainly on Orgeron as an excuse to retain Gary Gibbs for next season. I hope not.

This article also says that former Broncos D-line coach Bill Johnson is reportedly high on Payton's list to replace Orgeron. Really? If he does come here, I hope he brings a lot more than what was delivered by the Broncos defense this past season. They were awful.

Please hire a top-level defensive guy!!

As soon as I saw that Ogeron was leaving, i thought what you thought- he will be the scapegoat, his departure will be the offering in lieu of getting rid of Gibbs.

The Saints need a bonafide All-Pro level defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. A Jim Johnson,Spagnolou, Kiffin – level person. Not someone like Ogeron or Gibbs that as soon as they were named, it created controversy because many wondered if they had the know-how to get the job done. Well, you can argue a lot of things, but they haven’t gotten the job done, that is obvious. And we are considering the DL coach from the Broncos? Why are we looking in the resume file under “recent failure” instead of “recent success?” If a team were looking to lure a QB to their team, wouldn’t they be better off going for a Drew Brees or a Philip Rivers – or would they try to lure Tony Romo or Kyle Orton? Same kind of thing…..

I wrote on a earlier post

I think Ogeron was wanting to leave. Gibbs’ defensive playcalling is shit, plain and simple.
I don’t think the blame for the D-line’s poor year can be completely placed on Coach O. In fact, I think you could place “most” of the blame on Gibbs’ playcalling. If’ I were Coach O, I’d want to get out of this system too.
My Opinion. He probably caught wind that Gibbs would be back, and said, “fuck this shit, I’m out of here.”

probably even before that

Like in September. “WTF is this Gibbs Gumbo?? This is not what I signed on for. I’m gonna go surf for porn. Sed, take a couple of laps and then come and get me and we’ll go over a few things. Where’d I leave my cola pop?”

(Credit to M-E for the porn joke, I liked that one.)

Why does ogeron get a pass?

The DL was probably the most disappointing unit on a disappointing defense, and that is saying something. Grant and Smith were complete non-factors and Smith looked fat to me all year. Nobody wants Gibbs gone as much as me, but Ogeron stunk too. Good riddance.

I wasn't trying to give Coach O a pass

They definitely didn’t perform, I’m not claiming they did. All I’m saying is that he didn’t make the play calls, Gibbs did.
Are you dissappointed in the RB’s coach, because more running plays were’nt called?
And by the way, the DL was not the most dissapointing unit. The DB’s were.

Disagree

First of all, I’d argue that play calls have little to do with 3/4 of the DL never making a play the entire season.

Second, DL was WAY more disappointing. Let’s break it down:

  • We have 3 first round picks on the DL, including one that we traded into the top 8 to get. We also signed a fairly well respected FA there… vs …
  • The DBs have been the acknowledged weakness of our team for 3 years. We added a mid-level free agent and a 2nd round pick (who immediately became our best player there) who was hurt most of the season.
  • We lost 3 starters for significant periods of time to injury (Porter, McKenzie, Gay). I give you that Grant got hurt, but did you notice a difference?

no argument here Puke, but more on one
Are you dissappointed in the RB’s coach,

Yes. Aaron Kromer is that coach. He’s an offensive line coach.

Somebody school me on how an O line coach can be an effective running back coach. He’s going to explain how blocking works and how the back can take advantage of that? Did we see Reggie really pick and hit the holes this year? I don’t know that PT’s performance changed or improved in 2008, he pretty much did the same thing he did before (and I was one who didn’t think he could do it, but he did). Think Deuce had any minor adjustments pointed out to him by this guy? I don’t know. Somebody tell me.

Ogeron was not a

Factor, he was a band-aid w/ one side peeling off. He’d rather be in the college ranks. Read that he was quite the recruiter. Don’t how much one can coach up d-linemen, but schemes and situations are just as important, and o yeah TACKLING. We hardly blitzed all yr. When we got lead in Chicago and Vikes, and Car (last game) we played prevent, not to mention a K that cost us at least to 2 games.Don’t know who the replacement would be ,but I’d like to see another D-Lineman like Sed Ellis and definetly a S that drops the hammer on WR’s. Peace and Happy New Year !

The D Line was actually okay this year.

It wasn’t amazing or anything, but at least we stopped the run.
