Saints Reach Agreement to hire Bill Johnson as Defensive Line Coach

The Saints are set to hire Bill Johnson as the new defensive line coach. Per the Times-Pic

The Saints have reached an agreement with Bill Johnson to hire him as their defensive line coach, Saints coach Sean Payton confirmed Saturday.

Johnson comes to the Saints from Denver, where he was the defensive line coach. He has been a highly coveted assistant this offseason, with Green Bay -- another team looking to fill defensive coaching spots -- and others also expressing interest in bringing him in.

Not sure this is a good thing

Johnson is highly regarded, despite how poorly Denver’s defense played this year. But why hire defensive assistants before you hire the coordinator who will have to be responsible for their work?

Get Sean McDermott!

Absolutely

Should give next D-Co opprtinity to build his own crew unless..

Unless Johnson convinced the Saints he could get our 2 overly paid DE back on track. Could he be a voodoo priest?

WHAT!!!

So Green Bay And others liked the defensive line coach selected by the worst run professional football organization in history, so sean peyton hires him…..Tell me there is more because if not I have to assume COACH Peyton is behaving like a spoiled kid who is “acting out” because he did not want to release his friend gibbs but was pressured to do so…..or something like that? ?

Plese explain the urgency of this move and I will stand corrected…..until then this reminds me of the Jake Delhomme decision,,,,While they contrast in many ways their wisdom or lack thereof can be compared .

Sincerely hope I am wrong but doubt it very seriously. WE WANT WINNING ATTITUDES ALL AROUND, AT A MINIMUM.. OR HAS THAT NOT CHANGED AND MARKETING DECIDED THAT A #1 OFFENSE WILL KEEP THE FANS AND THE PRTME TIME TV PRODUCERS HAPPY until the team can be moved to a larger market…..

On second thought

…it’s odd that they pulled the trigger so fast on this guy. The rumor of Johnson’s hiring has been floating around ever since Orgeron left, and they got it done pretty quickly. They must be very high on him.

That makes me think that they’re equally high on Gregg Williams. It seems the Saints want to get the coaching vacancies filled as soon as possible: they pulled Williams in almost immediately, and he came here before anywhere else. So I wonder if he wasn’t also asked to sign off on Johnson as his line coach when he interviewed.

I wouldn’t be surprise at all if Williams was hired within the next few days.

The alternative is that they figure Johnson will be no different from any of the other assistants—all of whom are going to be in place when a new DC is hired. Whoever gets that post eventually is going to have to be able to work with the coaches already here, so that goes for Johnson as well.

Stockhrse, if you’re thinking of moving the team or selling it, a championship only makes the franchise worth more. I don’t see why you couldn’t work toward both goals at once, nor why you wouldn’t want to. If Benson does want to move the Saints, may he fry in hell forever; but I still believe we can aim for a championship in the meantime, and that’s what they’re doing.

Get Sean McDermott!

On Second Thought reply

IMHO Orgeron did improve rush defense but he left….look up Orgeron and then look up Johnson and if you are impressed with the swap that’s fine. I am not impressed…

next…..When you hire a man and give him an area of responsibility and do not give him the total authority todo the job and select his own people specially if a direct position under him is vacant. SHAME on your orgizational skills.IMHO and experience…..

I suspect that competency exceeds speed in any business decision. Sometimes the more you hurry the further behind you fall…Two interviews resulting two hires may be competent but the odds are against you specially if the candidates are not exceptional. Personally I do not see it but if you do i certainly have no argument with you….

I know not MR Benson’s intentions except they have more to do with money than any other single consideration and I CERTAINLY do not or would not blame him for making more money… (Did I really say that}….If we want to run a team go to the league and the bank and MAKE A DEAL…Money determines how many and which goals can be expedited….Larger markets bring in more money.

Championships are won by people who never stop trying to overcome the inequities of their situations…..Trying and competency achieves more than trying in a hurry….IMHO?

One thing for sure…What is done is done and time for further consideration is gone….So we will all live with it… )

Unsure.

I am not sure of the wisdom of this decision, perhaps it’s a good one…I m just happy Ogeron and Gibbs are gone. They were supposed to be working together to get a job done and the job didn’t get done.

Afterthought

To a degree AT LEAST I am guilty of rash judgement in that I now see that the saints tried to hire Coach Johnson last season. It seems his contract with Denver created a problem so his hiring was not spur of the moment….

But bringing in that consideration would he be considered a selection by gibbs and how does that sit with some fans?….I am out of this one for now before it drives me “crazy” considering that is a very short drive…..:)
