Saints Face Serious Cap Pressure

"We've been one of the higher-paying teams the last couple years, so that's catching up to us," Loomis said, pointing out the big-money deals doled out to Brees, Smith, Grant and top-10 draft picks Bush and Sedrick Ellis. "So we're not going to have the ability cap-wise to go out and make a significant one-guy, big-time deal and still have the ability to sign our own unrestricted free agents.

"We have to pay attention to the resources. I think this is different than maybe the past four, five years. We're going to have some cap pressure on our team."

Wooo….. Yeah, cutting it close there, Mickey. $20M left over, chump change. Your hands are tied man, you got NO room to manuever.

That's the 2008 cap data though

(I’m assuming the info on that Saints merchandising site was taken from the NFLPA site? Just wondering how accurate it is… or isn’t. But let’s assume that’s “official” data.)

The 2008 cap figures might have little resemblance to what really matters at this point… the 2009 figures. Escalating salaries on existing contracts could theoretically wipe out that $20MM cushion even before you start considering re-signing your own free agents (all of whom will get raises) and incentive/bonus payouts and such which go on 2009’s ledger.

That being said, Loomis is almost certainly deliberately setting expectations low, which is almost always the smart thing to do. And I still have all the confidence in the world in his abilities as a bean counter. He’ll figure out a way to keep us in good shape and still get some things done, no doubt.

But I don’t think he’s lying. It’s probably gonna be a LOT tighter than $20MM of mad money in the FO’s pocket.

Resign

Think of who we have to resign: Evans, Vilma, Moore, Thomas (Should get him now before he breaks out even more next season), and all the STer’s we have.

These guys are all high priced. These signings should remove the 20MM we have in cap space. But I agree, cutting Young, Thomas, Patten, and David would free up the cap nicely. Brunnel is gone as well. We are better off than he is making us out to be.

Add to that list

Stinch will probably get resigned and Nesbit should get released.
