Gregg Williams Hired as Saints Defensive Coordinator!!

I guess it's official!!

Article here from the Times-Pic

The Saints made their first big free agent acquisition of 2009, agreeing to terms with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams on Thursday morning. Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

One of the most respected defensive minds in the game and one of the most coveted candidates on the market, Williams will take over a Saints defense that ranked 23rd in the NFL in yards allowed and tied for 26th in points allowed last season.

Outstanding!

What a great hire. I was a sceptic- never thought we would draw an accomplished coach or compensate with a large enough salary. This guy brings proven results to a table that is in sore need of direction.

a few questions here: How long do you figure before we cand expect to see the fruits of this hire? Also, why do you think a D-Line coach was hired before the Coordinator? Shouldn’t he have had input on this?

Now I must get back to eating my happy crow.

by Barrylsu5 on Jan 15, 2009 9:58 AM CST reply actions

My gueses

As far as seeing results, my guess is “almost immediately.” I’m not sure what the result will be, though.

It might be improved play from all positions. It might be a tsunami of canned players. Don’t know yet.

I still bet they asked him to sign off on Bill Johnson, though. I’m morally certain the subject of the D-line vacancy must have come up.

So far, I'm feeling pretty good about this!

He does have the experience and a history of success, so maybe the Saints can finally “turn the corner” on defense. If that happens and the offense continues their success, we’ll be a unstoppable next year. Since we finished last in the division this year, we’re pretty much guaranteed to finish at the top of the NFC South next year. I know the Falcons didn’t quite keep that streak going this season, but they somehow came very close despite no one thinking they could.

Go Saints!!!!

GREAT!!!!

Man to be honest I didn’t think it was going to happen. I thought that they were waiting to the Eagles to get finished and try to get that coach. I was getting frustrated with everything, but happy with the results. Good Job SP and Mighty Mick…

now that the defense's problems are solved

Payton can focus on getting some production out of the offense, especially the passing game. First round WR at 14, anyone?

by MobileSaint on Jan 15, 2009 11:21 AM CST reply actions

HA! Be careful you don't rile M-E...

with talks of a 1st round offensive pick. It would be incredibly stupid for Mis-Pay to use their 1st rounder on that side of the ball, but considering what Payton has done in the past, it could be possible.

What this means

It means the Saints and Tom Benson are serious this time. They’re serving notice on the rest of the NFL that the Saints are making their move NOW.

It also means you can forget about empty seats in the Superdome next season, because all the tickets are going to be sold out by next week.

by MtnExile on Jan 15, 2009 11:40 AM CST reply actions

i thought there was still a waiting list for season tickets?

Draft D first

Plenty of needs before WR…. CB and S sould be the focus… a North-South RB can be gotten in a later round. Still way to early to make a strategy- FA’s could be crucial here.

by Barrylsu5 on Jan 15, 2009 12:07 PM CST reply actions

We also

need to trust Williams to get the people he thinks he needs. That means that if he starts Jason David, we have to turn into Jason David fans (for awhile, at least). It’s time to get behind the troops.

Agreed M-E

I really believe the talent is there but was mis-used. WIlliams built top 10 (actually top 3 if I read right) defenses for 3 different teams, if he thinks the talent is there I certainly will believe in his decisions, at least until it’s proven he was wrong. Let us just hope he is not wrong very often

This is like signing...

a big-time, big-name FA. Heard it will cost a pretty penny. I don’t think I’ve been this excited before about coaching moves in some time…Gibbs gone..now Williams.

Let’s draft smart on defense and get the best player out there for that particular position we need and maybe could still pickup a key FA.

Not only did the Saints need to make a move here on the defensive side of the ball but seeing the teams we’re facing next season couldn’t hurt either.

by 225Fan on Jan 15, 2009 2:20 PM CST reply actions

Another thing I just thought of

This is definitely going to impact the kinds of free agents the Saints might attract. Those who want to coast to a big payday need not apply (if Williams was willing to bench Lavar Arrington, he’s willing to bench you). Those who are aggressive and want to make a name for themselves will know they have a shot under Williams to do precisely that.

What a change: all the talented and hungry free agents will want to come here! Or am I just dreaming again?

Oh when the Saints...Start kicking ass...You don't want to be in that number...

by MtnExile on Jan 15, 2009 2:36 PM CST reply actions

You are NOT dreaming!

If I may quote Ed McMahan, “You are correct sir!” Next season is already starting to glow with the warm, fuzzy gleam of optimism and hope. Of course I’ve felt that way for the past twenty Saints’ offseasons and wound up bitterly disappointed at the end of all but two. If I were a betting man, my money would be on Jason David getting cut along with a few others from this season. Not sure just who yet, but that could also include Grant. I eagerly await Mis-Pay-Wil’s offseason defensive moves. Resigning Vilma is the next top priority. After that, I expect to see at least three new players from either the draft or FA wind up as defensive starters by opening day.

Go Saints!!!!

by David "Satch" Kelly on Jan 15, 2009 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

Just a thought...

Instead of Mis-Pay-Wil, how about Wil-Mis-Pay? I’m also eagerly awaiting what this 3-headed defensive demon will do, like I’m hoping they Wil-(not)-Mis-Pay for overrated players not worth the shirts on their backs. Ha!

And hoo-ah let’s get moving toward the scouting combine and Free Agency!!!!!

The Detroit Lions are on the clock!

by HansDat on Jan 15, 2009 7:47 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

I was struggling earlier to figure out the best combination of Loomis-Payton-Williams and don’t know how I missed that one. I like Wil-Mis-Pay because they have obviously miss-paid big $ to mediocre players in the past. I have a name for out new defense—D-Will, as in a new defense with the will to thoroughly pressure, blitz, and destroy all opposing offenses unlucky enough to cross their schedule. Actually, I think that may be one of DeAngelo Williams nicknames, but it can also apply to our defense now.

Go Saints!!!!

we can just call ours Will-D (and Gregg can “Will” our “-D” to improvement with a new scheme and new attitude).

Lions set to hire Swartz
NFL.com’s Adam Schefter reports that the Lions are expected to name Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz their next head coach.
They’re picking him over Ron Rivera and Todd Bowles. Schwartz, 42, makes sense for a Detroit franchise short on talent as an open-minded thinker who will keep the club’s 4-3 defense intact. Schwartz also has ties with the Bill Belichick tree and should find a good offensive coordinator. It’s unclear when the team will make an announcement. ESPN is also reporting the news.
Source: NFL.com

I figured they may have already made a decision on a head coach, since Williams decided to go with the Saints today. It was widely reported that Williams was waiting to see if the Titans wanted him for DC before agreeing to the Saints. Well, their DC in Schwartz does appear to be leaving. I wonder why Williams wound up choosing the Saints over the Titans. Maybe the Titans wanted to go in a different direction and didn’t offer him the job this morning? Maybe they made an offer he didn’t like as well as the Saints’ offer? I’d be interested to know, but probably never will. Regardless, I’m still glad he came to the Saints.

Go Saints!!!!

Interesting discussion at "Music City Miracles" Titans SB blog

http://www.musiccitymiracles.com/2009/1/15/725049/d-coordinator

Some think Dave McGinnis is the alternate Titans’ DC in waiting and Williams was never offered the job. Someone thinks the Saints just scored big time by landing Williams and also thinks our D has lots of talent with the only problem this season being Gibbs’ management of it. Maybe Williams only decided to “date” the Saints because the hotter chick (Titans) had already grabbed a boyfriend (McGinnis). Nevertheless, I’m psyched that he came here. He simply HAS to be a better DC than Gibbs.

Go Saints!!!!

by David "Satch" Kelly on Jan 15, 2009 3:20 PM CST reply actions

He IS a better DC

He’s proven that, and he’s about to prove it again.

Payton-Williams is going to become the Lennon-McCartney of the NFL. Can you tell I’m stoked?

Yes, I can tell.

Speaking of Lennon-McCartney, here’s my adjustment to part of their lyrics for “Yesterday.” Feel free to sing these lyrics the next time you hear this song:

Yesterday,
A Saints championship seemed so faaaaar away,
Now it looks as though our D will play,
Much bet-ter than…..yesterday.

Here's the New Orleans version

of “Here Comes The Sun”

Little dahlin’
It’s been a long, hot, humid summer
Little dahlin’
I think I’d kill for one cool beer

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It’s too hot

Little dahlin’
The crowds are dropping to the pavement
Little dahlin’
I think they’ll die without a beer

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It’s too hot

Little dahlin’
I think my brain is surely melting
Little dahlin’
I think I’d kill you for your beer

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It’s too hot

Our "D" DOES NOT have a lot of talent...

I recently read an article on Saints Report that featured Mike D. He said he had a conversation with a “Top Def Coord” in the NFC, and that DC said that only 3…thats right, 3 players on our defense would start for him. Porter, Ellis, and Vilma. That was a stunning revelation. I’ll try to post a link to the article later…

You have been so nice on all your visits here that we have welcomed you to the fold even tho you are a fan of those .. well I will be nice.

But why you come over cursing us this way?
What did we do to deserve that?

Just think tho. He went to another division rival so its not like your birds cant pick him apart still twice a year. That is if they let him actually call plays.

I kid

It’s just scary to watch you guys bring in a defensive coordinator that actually, you know, is aware of what a defense is supposed to look like. On top of that, the Bucs have cleaned out Jon Gruden and his merry band of Jeff Garcia enthusiasts and have a good chance of getting better, as well. Watching the division improve in January and looking over the Falcons schedule for 2009 isn’t doing my heart any favors.

it’s a brave new world out there.

by Dave Choate on Jan 19, 2009 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

Let me cheer you up

The Saints have serious cap issues. It looks like Gregg Williams will have to work his magic with the same set of guys…we won’t have the money to upgrade.

As for the Bucs, they’re old and wearing out fast. They need to be totally re-tooled, which is going to be a new coach’s inclination anyway. Now, they might pull a Mike Smith and give Morris a miracle rookie year; but more likely they’ll have teething issues and struggle to something like 6-10.

There are encouraging signs the Panthers may have shaken themselves to pieces from the strain of winning the division this year, too. All in all, I wouldn’t feel too bad if I were you.

Of course, all that is just to make you feel better. The Saints are going to be unstoppable.

interesting choice of words...
a spree of injuries

Love the use of that word “spree” – it’s almost as if on a “lark” we decided to have a bunch of injuries…

Spree – (according to freedictionary.com )

1. A carefree, lively outing.
2. A drinking bout.
3. A sudden indulgence in or outburst of an activity. See Synonyms at binge.

All three of these meanings can apply to any and all of the Saints seasons – HA!
