Vilma Arrested in Miami
A member of the New Orleans Saints has been arrested tonight in Miami. Miami-Dade police have booked Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, 26, with reckless driving and resisting arrest.
Police report that Vilma was weaving throughout traffic in his Range Rover; before being pulled over he ran a red light, and nearly hit two pedestrians. After being pulled ove,r Vilma refused to exit the vehicle at the officer's command exclaiming " You have to give me a reason. I aint going anywhere til I know what's going on." After finally getting out of the car he refused to place his hands on the side of the car as told to. After a heated debate between both parties he was placed under arrest for the obstruction of justice and was asked to place his left hand behind his back. After another refusal he attempted to move away from the vehicle. The officer called for backup as Vilma continued his struggle to pull his arms away before he was eventually handcuffed. Vilma was booked into the Miami Dade County Jail a little after 6 p.m., his bond is set at 65-hundred dollars.
Vilma has been in the NFL for five years, he came to the Saints last year in a trade from the New York Jets.

Sounds bad
It doesn’t say anything about a DWI or anything. Why was he weaving? He ran a red light? Having had a bad traffic experience with cops who seemed too overanxious for a big “get their names in the paper” bust once before, I’m more inclined to side with Vilma here until more is reported. VIlma is too smart to make a mistake that would land him in jail like this. I don’t see this as an issue that will keep him off the field and out of a Saints uniform, but I feel for him unless it’s proven he really screwed up here to such a degree the police had no choice but to arrest him.
On a side note, here’s a tip for anyone driving through Texas—stay away from the city of Muleshoe. That’s where I had my very bad experience. For simply exceeding the posted speed limit by 11 mph, I had a total of three police cars arrive on scene after I was pulled over, false accusations made that I was running from the police, my car searched, and I had to pay a fine of almost $200. The cops acted like they had just nabbed Billy the Kid or someone. It was a very bad day and a very degrading experience.
Go Saints!!!!

dealing withThe Man
Satch, I know you’re not a lawyer and neither am I, but I was actually thinking about this the other day. About 30 years ago (I was a mere child), I got pulled over for speeding. I was alone, 2 cops were there. One talked to me at the driver’s door while the other came around the passenger side, poked his long handled flashlight through the open window, and lifted up some clothes I had on the seat to see what was under it. I yelled at him “Hey, I didn’t give you permission to search my car.” Can’t remember what happened, I think he just stopped looking and they wrote me up.
So, they can’t search your car without a warrant or probable cause, can they? Of course, if you had done that, you’d have been roughed up and put in jail for the 48 hour maximum. Lesson: Stay out of Texas entirely.
There’s a bailout coming, but it’s not for you.

He asked me first and didn't search the trunk area.
He said he had to get my permission first before he could search my car, so I went ahead and allowed him to do his little ego-building search because I knew there was nothing illegal in it and I just wanted to get the hell out of their little F###ed-up town as soon as possible.
The funny thing about this search is that I was driving to Albuquerque from my Mom’s house in Alabama where she, as all mothers sometimes do, gave me a special cleaner for my carpet because I was moving out once I got home. The cleaner was Oxi-Clean and she put it in a Zip-Lock bag. If you’ve ever used this product, you’ll know Oxi-Clean comes in a fine, white powder form. Well, in a half-full Zip-Lock bag it looked just like the cocaine bags I used to see on Miami Vice. I even joked with her about this as I was leaving her house and we both had a good laugh about it. As the cop was searching my car, I was sitting on the side of the road praying that he did NOT find that bag because he would instantly assume it was some pure Colombian nose candy or something and haul me to jail without even testing it. Luckily for me, I had put it in my suitcase and the cop was unable to search it without a warrant I guess. I was sweating bullets over that damn bag of Oxi-Clean that day, my friends. I may have never gotten out of that accursed little town if they had found it.
Go Saints!!!!

OOPS
Bang goes the dynamite. Hope the details of this report turn out different under scrutiny. If not, then I hope he takes care of this like a man and we all move on. I’d hate to see us with an All-Penal System Defense (Charles Grant, I’m looking at you…)

Dealing with The Man, Part Deax
Look, my distain for the “The Man” is as bad as anybodies. But, when dealing with ‘Da Man there’s three things you gotta do if you have nothing to hide.
1. Do what they want. It will make your life alot easier. Resisting is futile and only leads to pain.
2. Always reply “Yes, sir”, “No, sir”. They like it. Makes ’em hard.
3. Tell the truth. They will spot a lie, and it will set you FREE.
If he had done these three things and just accepted his ticket, he could have gone on his way and probably avoided this whole thing. Remember, all cops can do is save your life or f#*k it up. If they’re not there to save it, be as non-confrontational as possible and get the hell out of there. Unfortunately, some of us are more confrontational than others.
Reminds me of hearing Hershel Walker on the radio the other day talking about this book he wrote. Says he has some personality disorder thats borderline schitzo. Talked about how he was a different guy when he was on the field than when he was off. Said you didn’t want to deal with the football guy, and had to learn how to “turn him off” and become “normal” guy when at home or away from the field. Looks like Vilma holds on to football guy a little to long.
Already know you that which you need.

There's something deeper going on
Vilma must have had a bad day and was in “don’t give a fuck” mode. I doubt that his problem was with the cops, per se. (Don’t get me wrong—I’m not a police apologist. But maybe Jonathan needs to watch Chris Rock.)

Update
Vilma plans to challenge the charges against him
"Jonathan Vilma plans to challenge the charges of reckless driving and resisting arrest that were brought against him after he was arrested on Friday afternoon in Miami, according to his agent Mitchell Frankel.
According to reports out of Miami, the police report said Vilma was speeding in and out of traffic, ran a red light and became belligerent with officers. He was arrested and booked in Miami-Dade County Jail, and he was later released on bond."

A different viewpoint using the 'facts' they gave us.
Posted this as a response but its fallen off the front page so putting it here as well
Google map the intersection. The street they say he was weaving at is the right below the access ramp to the dolphin expressway. The street the made the right hand turn on is right after the exit ramp.
Picture this.
Vilma makes a lane change to the right hand land as he is turning right. Didnt realize that there was a on ramp to the highway there… The entrance lane is backed up so he sees its backed up, so jumps back into the left lane right away. Checking his mirrors and seeing he can make it safely. He clears the onramp and jumps back into the right lane thinking that there is only 1 onramp. But no, there is another onramp there and its backed up too.. so he jumps back into the lane. Finally clears that and jumps back into the right lane again. Now he notices a car is coming down the offramp and is going to be joining traffic in the right hand lane.
Frustrated yet? I know I would be.
He sees that either he has to speed up to get in front of the car .. or change lanes again… maybe he cant get back into the left lane this time, or maybe he is just frustrated and his neck is hurting after all these blindspot checks… so he speeds up.
CRAP, the light changed red! All this checking blindspots blah blah missed the yellow.
People crossing street.. not there yet.. safest option is to just make the turn. (Where I live you are allowed to turn right on a red unless otherwise posted ).
Should he have stopped at the red… yes.
Actually we don’t know that he DIDN’T stop at the red. They say he ran a red to turn. Maybe it was a no turn on red street.
We cant know what exactly happened, but I am pretty sure that if I didn’t think I had done wrong and a cop pulled me over and said "Step out of the vehicle" my first words are going to be "why? what did i do wrong?" Of course I would be undoing my seat belt to actually get out while i said it, but I would ask it.
Unless someone caught it on film we will have to talk one persons view. The original view given us was him weaving and almost hitting people. VERY different from the real story. You say someone is weaving everyone thinks drunk. My take on it follows the letter of the story they released and doesn’t sound near as bad.
And they say they couldnt see who was driving… but what does the plate on the RR that he was driving say?

ouch.
MT is a big BS’r. It’s a game to him.
No BS here. I just tell it like it is… or in the case of my depiction of Vilma’s weaving.. as it could be based on the available data WE have.
But it is a game. I wonder if my version is right.. I cant wait to see what Vilma says actually happened lol
