Gary Gibbs to Become Bucs New Assistant Head Coach?!
[Note by Saintsational, Special thanks to Satchmo26. He has been on fire today delivering the hot news! Great work! Nice new avatar. 01/16/09 10:03 PM CST ]
I'm not kidding here. The people over at "Buc 'Em" (The Bucs SB Nation blog) report that this rumor is flying around, along with many others, after today's housecleaning in Tampa Bay. It seems the Bucs organization is in total meltdown mode, which may bode well for the Saints next season. The Glazer brothers look like they've decided to go into a complete rebuild of their team.
ESPN Confirms the hiring of Gibbs
They say Gibbs was being hired as part of the defensive staff this afternoon and then, all out of the blue, Gruden and Allen were fired.
The surprising firings of Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen are expected to yield the quick hiring of Raheem Morris as head coach and Mark Dominik as general manager, according to multiple sources.
According to a source, a news conference could be held as early as Saturday.
Morris, 32, has made a meteoric rise from Hofstra’s defensive backs coach in 2000-2001 to head coach of the Bucs in 2009. Morris, who coached the Bucs’ secondary from 2006 through 2007, interviewed for the Broncos’ head coaching position. He had been promoted to defensive coordinator of the Bucs after Monte Kiffin left for the University of Tennessee.
Dominik joined the Bucs in 1995 as a pro personnel assistant. He was a candidate for the Chiefs general manager job that went to Scott Pioli.
The firing of Gruden and Allen came out of the blue. Allen spent the afternoon negotiating a contract to hire Joe Barry as the Bucs linebackers coach. Morris was in the process of hiring former Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs for the defensive staff.
Here’s a link to the rest of the article, which does not confirm the Gibbs as assistant head coach rumor:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3839578
It turns out they still have to pay Gruden and Allen for next year, which will keep them from dishing out the big money for a top-of-the-line head coach. It’s a TOTAL MELTDOWN! It looks as though we may not have to worry about them next year. Needless to say, the people at the Buc 'Em blog are beside themselves with disbelief over both the firing of Gruden and the hiring of Gibbs.

Apparently
The Bucs DID sign former Saints Defensive Coordinator in Gary Gibbs and have made him Assistant Head Coach. I don’t see the point in that, but I’m also no where near being informed. I do know that Gibbs defense was pitiful the past three seasons for Saints fans..
Let’s just hope and pray a keen offensive mind is brought in to run the offense
Greg Williams was hired by New Orleans earlier today, but…Gary Gibbs?
Jerry, please tell me something good about this guy because I just don’t get it

I’m actually starting to feel for these guys. Well, Gary is their worry now. Honestly, I hope Gary defies our expectations and has some success for them….but only very limited success and never against the Saints.
Go Saints!!!!

Satch, you are a thinker and a true gentleman
I am neither.
This is the best day I’ve had in some time! Not even my birthday! Suck it, Bucs!
I posted the Gary Gibbs Must Geaux! photo over there as a fanshot and told them they would need it eventually.

lol!! Very funny Stu!
Yeah, out of all of our divisional rivals, I dislike the Bucs the most. I think they’re in for a long and disappointing year.
Go Saints!!!!

rotoworld.com:
Raheem Morris is considered one of the brightest young coaches in the NFL, and he has his work cut out for him with an aging roster in need of rebuilding.
No kidding, the Bucs ARE old and damaged. Gruden and the GM ran that team into the ground.

My heart goes out to you guys
Needless to say, but most of us around here were hoping the Saints would kick Gary to the curb halfway through the season. Granted, he did have to deal with many key injuries this season that landed some starters on IR (CB Tracy Porter, CB Mike McKenzie, DE Charles Grant) and kept some starters from performing well or playing the entire season (DE Will Smith, DT Sedrick Ellis, and others). But, his scheme just didn’t get enough pressure on opposing QBs and his players seemed to have tuned him out to some extent even before mid-season. MtnExile and Stujp could probably explain the “Gibbs Gumbo” and its faults better than I can. I can tell you this much—he’s no where near the same defensive football genius that Monte Kiffin is.
This shakedown of your team is very interesting and doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense so far. Since we are division rivals, I can’t say I wish you guys good luck or anything but I’ll be interested to see how these changes play out for you. Just search “Gary Gibbs” here at CSC and you’ll find many a post on him and his defense. I wish I could say it was all good.
Go Saints!!!!

Careful what you wish for
What’s it gonna say about our defense if Tampa’s defense is great next year and our’s is still mediocre. Maybe it wasn’t GG, it was the talent, or lack there of.
Already know you that which you need.

Where is M-E?
Some prime argument building material here.
I don’t know very much at all. But the one thing I could never understand is why he directed the corners to play so far off the receivers ALL THE TIME. No contact at the line, no challenge to them running their routes. It was like he was conceding the short stuff, “Just don’t get beat deep, Jason. OK? Remember that.” Of course they got beat deep anyway. That was my biggest issue with Gibbs. And we all seem to have forgotten poor Fred Thomas. Same as Jason David, only an older version.

I've been working and sleeping late
And the world has shifted in its orbit while I was gone. Can’t even go the bathroom anymore without stuff happening while I’m gone.
Does anyone know exactly what Gibbs was hired to do? “Assistant head coach”—what’s that? He makes the coffee?
If he’s only a position coach, like linebackers (what he did for the Cowboys), then he might have some success. If all he’s coaching is technique, I imagine he knows that as well as anyone. But if he’s being asked to manage the game in any capacity, the Bucs are toast.
Oh when the Saints...Start kicking ass...You don't want to be in that number...

Maybe he does the preliminary porn surfing and bookmarks the pages for the kid coach.
