Gary Gibbs Fired!!
Per the Times-Pic
The Saints have fired defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs.
The Saints fired Defensive Coordinator Gary Gibbs on Wednesday, 10 days after finishing the 2008 regular season ranked 23rd in the NFL in total defense. Team spokesman Greg Bensel, comfirmed the move, and an announcement from the organization is expected shortly.
Gibbs joined the organization three years ago, when he followed Saints Coach Sean Payton from Dallas to New Orleans. And Gibbs' defense ranked 11th in the NFL during his first season with the team.
But Gibbs' unit fell to 26th in the league in 2007, allowing 348.1 yards per game, and while the Saints finished with the No. 1-ranked offense in 2008, the defense saw little improvement.
Gibbs' defense allowed 339.5 yards per game in 2008, struggling to cope with injuries and constantly giving up big plays in the secondary. The Saints also never seemed to find the production they were looking for from their defensive line, which has two highly paid defensive ends in Will Smith and Charles Grant but struggled in pressuring opposing quarterbacks

:( Sorry for Coach Gibbs. He is, by all accounts, a nice guy. I wish him luck.
Now…LET’S GET HAPPY!!!!!!
Gary Gibbs Must Geaux!

let the names begin
Good luck to Gibbs. A nice guy but the business is about results. Nobody can say the Saints D got it done in ’07 or ’08.
Here’s to a different ’09. Maybe Payton was waiting to have someone in place for a successor before making this move

Didn’t think it would happen, a Festivus miracle no doubt. I wish him and his family the best, seemed like a decent guy.

WOW! I was really beginning to lose hope.
I can’t believe Payton actually did it. Maybe he’s not quite as stubborn as I once thought. PRAISE BE TO THE FOOTBALL GODS! There’s hope for next year after all! Best of luck to Gary as it was nothing personal by any of us or any Saints fan I’m sure, but this is a results-orientated league. This is only the first step. I anxiously await what comes next.
Go Saints!!!!

OR
…maybe we should be saying “LooPay” instead. This decision may have been forced on Payton.
Get Sean McDermott!

True
Have you read Gladow’s recent article from the Times-Pic opinion on why he was fired? He seems to take the cynical view that it was all about selling tickets and not so much about improving the team. I know that was part of it but I disagree that that was the only reason.

I agree more with Duncan’s view:

Well M-E, it looks like your lobbying paid off. Thanks Man!

Ya know
in these hard economic times you really hate to see someone, ANYONE, lose their gig, so here’s to hoping dude can find gameful employment doing something that he enjoys and feeds his family. God speed and bless him in all his future endeavors.
Now back to being a Saint Fan….HEEELLLLL YES!!!!!! Now get somebody who can show these cats how to be nasty, how to blitz how to take a way some balls and take some pressure off the offense. That actually makes my day!

woot!!
Now, lets get Sean McDermott and either O.J. Atowge/Rey Maluga combo or Taylor Mays and a top tier CB!

Good news
Although, Jason David should be riding shotgun with Gibbs.

He may be gone too, depending on his contract situation
Anyone remember what next year looks like money-wise for Chasin’ David? I remember before this past season that if the Saints had cut him, they still would have had to pay him. That may be different going into next year. I wouldn’t expect him to make the roster. I guess it all will depend on who they hire. The Saints offseason just got interesting.
Go Saints!!!!

Hard to find salaries
USA Today has up to this years but not future years. Rotoworld has this and it’s good enough for our purposes.
As for your question, it may had to do with the signing bonus prorating or the team not saving money by cutting him.

and still none of the major sports media sites has this story.
Pacman Jones was cut. Now THERE’S big news.

Gibbs is gone
Now let’s hear about all the folks being interviewed/considered for the job…we have here a nice little short list created by M-E that could be shared with LooPay.
Also, on a lighter note, given that Gary Gibbs needs work now, maybe he can just hook up with some relatives of his (I can’t believe I never connected them before now) and join the BeeGees on their reunion tour. C’mon, just picture him up on stage as the 5th (6th?) Gibbs brother in the BeeGees. He’d have a shaggy 70’s haircut, sport a slick white suit and he’d be beltin’ out the high falsetto: “Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Stayin’ Alive! Stayin’ Alive! Feel the city quakin and everybody’s shakin it’s stayin’ alive, stayin alive!”

eatin' it
Well, I’d just like to say: I was wrong. I thought Payton would dig his heels in for another year. It seems pressure was applied.
Well, ok then. Good luck to Gary Gibbs, I’m sure he’ll be fine. Does this mean I have to buy 2009 season tickets now?

can we delete
that post on the2008 defensive stats now? Too depressing. Start the year spanking clean.
But keep them around to compare to Gibbs’ successor at this point next year.

to be replaced by the next "best news ever" bit...in 2012
New Orleans, LA — Sean McDermott, the third-year def coord for the New Orleans Saints has been named the Assistant Coach of the year after his defense led the league in fewest points and yards allowed, while having the most sacks and the best takeaway/giveaway margin. Oh, yeah, the Saints also won their second consecutive Super Bowl and placed 15 players on the pro bowl team.
How’s that for a Comic Book Store Guy fantasy?

GREAT NEWS, NOW LET'S GO GET PACMAN...
JUST KIDDING! This is awesome, I had definitely lost hope. And before we throw David overboard, if the new DC is a Kiffin, cover 2 type disciple we could still use ol’ JD, even though he sucks!! Go Saints!

And still, not even NFL.com has this story. What is going on with the MSM? I guess the Saints aren’t important. That’s okay, flying under the radar is good.

…stil can’t figure out what MSM stands for. Call me french or freak but give me a cue.
Oh yeah, nice post on T-P about skipping 3-4 D-Coach as candidate for the Saints…

MSM = mainstream media outlets (i.e. ESPN, FOX, CBS, NFL.com, NFL network, etc.)

Wow
That right there is a factoid, as my Infectious Disease professor would say.
The first time he used this acronym, my classmates and I had confused looks on our faces, and he soon explained. The rest of the lecture was a waste of time because we were like 4th graders chuckling about MSM.

I can’t believe Payton actually did it. Good for you Payton…and for the Saints.
Dave…you must have sent that copy of the season’s defensive stats to Payton…good work!

I just figured out something
All week, I’ve been trying to think of who Gary Gibbs looks like. Seeing his head shot so many times recently has really been bugging me and I think I finally have it now…
Any of you guys sci-fi fans? Star Trek???
Gibbs looks just like that character from DeepSpace9 (the one with the black captain) who was played by the Rene Auberjunois guy who was Clayton on Benson in the 80’s. He had light brown hair and it looked like his skin had been ironed flat with no wrinkles.
Anyway, I’m just glad I’ve gotten that bee out of my bonnet.

lol
Yeah, I vaguely recall the guy you’re talking about and think you’re right. I never watched much Star Trek beyond reruns of the original series, on which I’ve wasted countless hours viewing many, many times. I think Odo was the name of the character on DeepSpace9 you are referring to. Isn’t he the one who could morph into different beings and what not? Too bad Gibbs couldn’t also morph himself into a decent DC. Sorry Gary, I know you did the best you could with what you had and I’m sure you’ll find a D assistant job somewhere soon.
Go Saints!!!!

thanks, Satch!
Odo, I think you’re right about that and that he was some kind of changeling. I didn’t watch DS9 or SBTB, but I loved the original Star Trek and the Next Generation.
I couldn’t cut and paste a photo but here’s a link to a photo on wikipedia
