I can't wait for the draft

So I'm not going to.

One of the most useful draft sites, I think, is WalterFootball.com, both for its own analysis and for the fact that it aggregates virtually ALL the mock drafts on the web.

This evening I waded through eight mock drafts--an arbitrary number, which represents the point at which I got tired of it--to see which players might be available to the Saints drafting at 14. The answer was surprising. Here are some prospects that might be of use to the Saints, and how many times out of 8 they were thought to be still available:

  • William Moore, S, Missouri (6)
  • Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois (5)
  • Brandon Spikes, LB, Florida (4)
  • Rey Maualuga, LB, USC (4)
  • Taylor Mays, S, USC (3)
  • Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest (2)
  • Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State (2)

This is phenomenally good news. Granted, mock drafters are frequently as full of it as fantasy footballers (there, I've neatly insulted nearly everyone), but in their aggregate they're pretty accurate over a range of choices. In other words, it's almost certain that at least one of these players will be available to the Saints.

I have definite preferences, but I'd be very happy to have any of these guys. And it looks like we certainly could have one of them.

Okay, that's the intro. So...who should we pick?

Yeah, M-E, and i had this NFL draft magazine I bought in March 2008 and I read it cover to cover, over and over again until Draft Day

And it listed Ellis as #1 and Dorsey as #2 overall, and then we ended up with Ellis at #7. It felt AWESOME to me that we got him. This mag was also dead-on with saying we’d take Porter in the second round in their mock draft.

I am stoked and can’t wait to see how it plays out this spring…

I’m intrigued by that Aaron Curry guy – I watched a few WF games this year, but can’t remember if he was any good in them. He sure looks like a good OLB to pair with VILMA.

I like Mays, too, and I’d be cool with us getting one of the top 2 corners, also.

It really will depend on what we get in FA and who we re-sign. Getting Vilma allowed us not to have to take Rivers.

What is that magazine?

by stujo4 on Jan 10, 2009 10:57 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just tried looking it up on-line and found nothing...

It was one of the many NFL Draft magazines that come out in Feb/March and that stay on the newsstands until May (I always end up buying 2-3 of these each year just to get me through the winter/spring). I can’t remember the name of it, but it wasn’t one of the weeklies – Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, or ESPN the mag – it might have been Athlon, or Lindy’s or maybe even something more obscure than either of those.

Sorry, Stujo, but that’s all I’ve got.

oops one more thing

I think it did have Ellis and Dorsey on the cover. One of the main articles was how Ellis and Dorsey would go 1-2 in that draft and how hard it would be to choose between them.

aw, man I just googled "Sedrick Ellis cover" to see if that would pull up the cover of the draft mag

and guess what popped up at #7 on the list of items????

I love the Sedrick Ellis trade. That is exactly what I thought should happen. … Porter will be a good cover corner, his rating was down cause he’s not …

Does anyone remember writing that? Because it’s from a cached page of the Canal Street Chronicles that someone posted on 4/26/08.

It’s kinda cool to see our site coming up on a google search, but maybe I’m just a nerd…

I think safety would be best

I’d like Mays but he’s a physical beast and his stock will rise after the combine, but still he’s my realistic favorite. If one of those corners is available we’d have to give them a good luck same for the linebackers if we lose Vilma. Anyway I’m counting(hoping) on us having a good free agency. If so, then I want to draft Taylor Mays, maybe move some pieces around and getting some more first day draft picks, hopefully to draft a center(there are more good ones than usual).

Here's what I hope for

Atogwe in free agency, and Vontae Davis in the draft (Davis and Porter at the corners could be wicked), or Dunta Robinson in FA plus Taylor Mays in the draft. I’m afraid linebacker and defensive end are just going to have to wait.

Get Sean McDermott!

Jenkins

I don’t think he’ll be around at 14, but I’d love to get him. Having him and Porter at corner would allow us to blitz more without getting totally scorched. I don’t think Mays will be there either, but I’d be down with him. I’m not as familiar with some of the others but it is obvious we need back 7 help.

I’d really like to see us get a center with one of our later picks.

I see us trading down

unless a beast of a defensive end is available. Safety is one of those positions that seems to gel more in the 20’s draft position (see Ed Reed), and may allow us to pick up a second or third for moving down a few slots, plus allow us to save on the rookie contract.

I think DE, unless we can pick up another serviceable free agent (a la McCray), may be a bigger priority than first thought as if Grant and Smith are suspended the first 4 games, we will need another body in the rotation.

Can somebody please explain to me why Charles Grant didn’t just man up and serve his suspension while hurt this past year? He may have lost a 4-game paycheck but in my view, this makes him a lot more expendable when cuttin’ time comes this offseason if the Saints know (at best) they only get 12 games out of him. I think he could have paid the rent on the pay from his other 12 games. Much as I hate to say it, I think those guys ultimately lose their court case.

by MobileSaint on Jan 10, 2009 9:56 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

United we stand, devided we fall

I think McAllister, Smith, and Grant were advised by their lawyer to all three stand together in the case. If Grant had just taken the suspension (agreed, probably would have been best for him), that would have left Deuce and Smith as the lone two fighting it with Nesbit and Grant accepting it. At the time, they probably thought their chances were better with Grant fighting it with them.

Go Saints!!!!

I guess

If you think you’re innocent, you fight it to clear your name. It would’ve been better for the team to just fall on the sword though.

And as we look hard at DB and LB in the first round, I can't help but remember

the last time we went with either of those positions when we were in the 7-9 or 8-8 pack of NFL teams, picking in mid-first round, which were the late Mora years of the mid-90’s.

Mark Fields and Alex Molden. I think it’s right that they were our starters for 5+ years or so and maybe had a couple of pro bowl appearances between them. That seems a bit underwhelming to me…and with the draft being mostly a crapshoot, I don’t want to lock too hard in on a specific position or two and miss out on an awesome player that may really help at a position that is not our highest need at the time.

Oh, no, here it comes again, I’m waffling into indecision and paralyisis already, and we’re not even into February yet. HELP!

I agree with Mobile.....

Saints, I want us to trade down and get a few more picks. I think this post should be posted again in late Feb early Mar to see where we are with a DC and his scheme and the players that we going to pick up in FA. Well with that being said I like the safeties on the list Moore over Mays. The only reason I say that is because already have a run stopper, he NEED a ball hawk back there. Hell to be honest, wish we could trade down get Moore and still pick up a cover corner (Jenkins or Davis)/ or a faster LB to go with the VILL-N we have in the middle but I know that REALLY maybe asking for to much……

just checked espn.com nfl page

And the headlines include numerous highly regarded underclassmen (TT’s WR Crabtree, Mizzou’s WR Maclin, Bama’s RB Coffee) coming out to enter the draft.

I selfishly say, “Keep ’em coming!” The more of these kind of guys in the draft pool (I’m looking at you Sam Bradford), the better chance we have at getting someone we like at #14 (or getting a team to trade into that spot).

I like Glenn Coffee

Of course I’m biased because of my life-long devotion to the Crimson TIde. I know we need to think DEFENSE as a priority in the draft, but I’d like to see them draft a promising RB prospect in the mid to later rounds. Preferably, a well-vetted and well-researched RB (unlike Antonio Pittman) with a powerful running style, that doesn’t fumble the ball a lot, and with a history of few injuries would be great considering that Deuce will probably be going elsewhere. My main man still has the power, but I have to admit the speed just isn’t there anymore. I like PT, but still feel we could use a larger RB to compliment he and Reggie. I’d love for Payton to somehow develop his own combo of Earth (???), Wind (Pierre), and Fire (Reggie). It will be interesting to see how Mis-Pay approaches the draft. There’s a good chance they could trade down into a lower 1st round spot and pick up a 3rd round pick from someone.

Go Saints!!!!

i'd like the trade down

unless mays, brown from fsu or curry is there. i don’t think any of those 3 would be there, but i definitely think we could trade down a few and get vontae davis or william moore a little bit lower (laurinaitis, a possibilty, also). if we trade down, hopefully we could get either the 2nd rounder from the shockey debacle or at least the 3rd rounder from the vilma deal back. i go to the draft every year and am really pumped for this year – i want to go all defense, except maybe a big back/o line later, but we have to get vilma back in free agency first!!!!

Brown is a 3-4 backer

but if we sign Gregg Williams, he’s likely to play a bit of everything.

So if we can shore up the secondary with GOOD free agents, then sure…I can handle getting a top-notch edge rusher. Keep him away from StarCaps, though.

Adam Jones is the new Lito Sheppard

Hard to fathom, but Jones is actually more overrated than Sheppard.

rotoworld.com:

Cowboys released CB/PR Adam “Pacman” Jones.
They ended up paying him $700K for nine games of average nickel back play and 21 unproductive punt returns. Dealing for Jones in 2008 was a worthwhile risk, but Pacman’s year layoff appeared to cost him his ball skills and he was slow to pick up Dallas’ man-to-man schemes. Other teams won’t hurry to sign Pacman, and it’s quite conceivable that he’ll spend 2009 out of football. That could be dangerous considering his lack of self control.

I don't see him playing next year

Few people are willing to roll the dice on players like Jerry Jones. If Jerry doesn’t want him, I doubt anyone will. He’s certainly not coming to New Orleans so let’s not even begin to aggravate stujo with talks of such an impossible occurence. :-)

well

i mentioned him coming here mostly as a joke (the NOPD is already busy enough) but i wouldnt be surprised to see him go to a small market team. some place that doesnt come with as much media scrutiny as the cowboys. maybe the chiefs. meh, who knows.
more to the topic, i dont see the saints going after a big-name, shut-down corner in FA, but more for a guy like jason david. only hopefully our new guy doesnt suck as much.

…and you want to send Pacman to Kansas City. He better hire Lito as bodyguard…that way stujo might be too preoccupied with Lito to hit Pacman.

by satchmo26 on Jan 12, 2009 5:04 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

YES!

Al Davis signs Pacman Jones, which renders Nnamdi Asomugha expendable. Asomugha reaches the free agent market, and New Orleans saves enough in cap space by cutting Jason David, Aaron Glenn, and Charles Grant to sign Asomugha. Then we cut Kevin Kaesviharn and sign Oshiomogho Atogwe at safety. Then we draft Everette Brown. Gregg Williams coaches them up: Brown gets 15 sacks as a rookie, the secondary gets 30 interceptions, and New Orleans wins the Super Bowl.

It all hinges on Al Davis coming unhinged. Come on, Al!

Despite Pacman Jones’ suggestion that he could return to Dallas next season, owner Jerry Jones has reportedly turned the page on the troubled cornerback’s Cowboys career.
The sensationalized ESPN report that led to Pacman’s recent release only expedited the inevitable. Jerry Jones was willing to roll the dice when he thought Pacman had All Pro game-breaking potential, but it’s clear now that his play on the field doesn’t merit the massive headache that comes with it. Pacman will be fighting an uphill battle trying to convince another team to take a chance on him in 2009.

I wish Saints fans would understand that we have virtually no tradable assets.
Again, we have no tradable assets.
Stop suggesting them.
Robert Meachem cannot be traded for Lito Shephard. Or a second 1st Round pick. Nor can Devery Henderson.
