CSC All-Time Saints Team Nominations: Defensive End No. 2

We've had a few requests by some of our members to take this bye week as an opportunity to get back to our All-Time Saints Team selection process started this past summer. Since there isn't much else to talk about and I'm a man of the people, why the hell not?

Today, we will revisit the defensive end position. If you'll remember, Wayne Martin was selected as the first defensive end for our team. Therefore, it only makes sense to include the remaining nominees from our first election to be nominated again for re-election. Those players were:

  • Joe Johnson
  • Jim Wilks
  • Doug Atkins
  • Darren Howard
  • Renaldo Turnbull
  • Bob Pollard
  • Bruce Clark
  • Frank Warren
As always, however, the comment section is open for any other possible candidates. With so many already on the list fighting it out for the last remaining spot, I can't imagine there is anyone else out there worth including.

The poll will open at 6am Central tomorrow morning and will be open for exactly 48 hours, ending on Tuesday, October 13th.

As always, the comment section is open for more discussion about these great players and the way things used to be.

Hmmmm

Johnson and Howard have good numbers, and were part of awesome 2000 defense and playoff win.

Wilks, Warren, and Clark anchored our DL in the 80’s/early 90’s with Mora and the Dome Patrol.

Turnbuckle had a coupla decent years for us, but nothing like we had hoped from him…

Don’t know much about Pollard and Atkins.

Doug Atkins

Doug Atkins was Man-Giant. He would wrap up the whole backfield and throw them out one-by-one until he found the one with ball.

Joe Johnson

Can’t vote for anyone else, JJ was one of my favorites!

Jim Wilks

I thought he was more of a DT, no?

by saints-nation on Oct 10, 2009 10:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Wilks

He played his entire 13 years with the Saints, and rarely missed a game. Even in the 3-4 defense of the Dome Patrol days, he was getting sacks.

Am I the only one...

that has wistful memories of Frank Warren?

Or maybe that’s just Tecmo Bowl talking…

"Gowin on fourth and 14 will punt it away. He hangs it very high, angling it for the near sideline...HAKIM DROPS THE BALL!!! HAKIM DROPS THE BALL!! Brian Milne might've fallen on it at the ten yard line! It's the New Orleans Saints' football! Brian Milne, the most unlikely hero of them all, falls on the fumble, the muff by Hakim! There is a God after all!" -- Jim Henderson

Tecom Bowl

is the reason I have inexplicably fond memories of Thurman Thomas to this day.

cut and pasted right from an article in usatoday after he signed with the eagles

Howard didn’t play the final four games because of problems with management; not a knee injury as the Saints had listed.

“That had nothing to do with the knee,” Howard said. “It was something between the front office and the coaches and myself. I just felt I didn’t get the same respect I was giving the organization for six years. I’m completely healthy.”

couldn't that get the saints in trouble with the league - saying someone's injured when they are not?

It’s unfortunate that all that happened, but I don’t know that I’d yell things at the man’s mother…I’d just say good riddance.

Doug Atkins

I may be throwing my vote away with all the younger voters not remembering him, but I feel a bit nostalgic.

WHAT?!?!

Granted, I don’t post here often as I’m not around a computer much and haven’t been able to hit this site in a few weeks…sea duty does that. But, I noticed that there are 11 posts to this article and not one of them is by CP?? Is he okay? I completely expected to read a 25-page diatribe extorting the prolific performances of some historical figure in Saints history that totally obliterates the actions of more recent players.

Am I missing something? Maybe I should hit refresh….

Sorry, CP. Just had to.

Busy weekend

Plus, I pretty much covered this entire lot the last time around. I voted for Bruce Clark, but have no problem with Johnson or any of the other nominees. Derland Moore truly deserves the other DT spot and it kind of bothers me that neither Wilks nor Warren are going to wind up making this team, but what can you do? There are only so many spots to go around.

Can anyone fill me in on the Darren Howard thing?

I thought he was an excellent player, but when he was with the Saints there was no CSC so i am underinformed.

I think he's referring to the fact

that the Saints beat the Eagles in the playoffs the following year.
