I understand they don't want to lose him, but what's Hartley really good for?
Keeping on the inactive list in case of a freak kicker injury to Carney?
Morestead’s got the kickoffs taken care of, and could frankly try the 45+-yard FGs himself.
I think they’re keeping him so they won’t lose him after they’re done with Carney this year.

So is Chase going back on the practice squad? I hope so. He seems like an upstanding young man and let’s face it, Brunell is no youngster at backup. If they are keeping Hartley for future years, why not Chase?

Daniel
already cleared waivers once. I’m sure they realize the odds of him actually contributing in a game this season are far less than that of Hartley contributing. Personally, I would’ve been inclined to let Carney walk, given the choice, but I really don’t think any one of the three are close to being irreplaceable. They could have picked straws and arrived at just as sound a decision.

does it bother anyone else?
that we keep letting this young quarterbacks go? At some point it would be nice to commit to the development of a youngster. The assumption of Brees’ continued health and Brunell’s availability should something happen is a little worrisome.

I think they will have no choice but to address that in the draft next year, and there may be some decent options late in the first or second rounds to work with. For right now, as CP mentioned, I don’t imagine Daniel is really going anywhere. They might be playing the Joey Harrington game with him, slipping him a little paycheck every few weeks to keep him close and practicing, just in case. While Daniel might be a diamond in the rough, straight from the Brees mold, he might also just be rough.

i like carney
but the fact that we cant kick anything longer than a 45yd fg is a problem. chase will clear waivers and be fine, these kind of moves take place all the time. and if we have to rely on chase or brunell anytime soon, we are in trouble.
