Home field for the Playoffs? A look at the schedules
After the Saints impressive win over the Giants, a buddy of mine and I were discussing how big this win was. It showed us that the Saints are for real. I had always contended that the Giants were the team that I feared the most. Their ability to pressure QBs with only their front 4 seemed a pre-requisite to beat the Saints, since Brees has been so legendary against the blitz in his NOLA tenure. That may still be the key, but we certainly didn’t see any of that 4-man pressure on Sunday. This certainly looks like the best Saints team I’ve ever seen BY FAR. Therefore, I don’t think it is ridiculous to consider the most ridiculous of prospects – the Saints as the number 1 seed in the NFC. Now I know it is early, and lots of things can happen along the way, but let’s look at the remaining schedules of the big 3 contenders in the NFC:
New Orleans:
@Miami
vs Atlanta
vs Carolina
@ St. Louis
@ Tampa Bay
vs New England
@ Washington
@ Atlanta
vs Dallas
vs Tampa Bay
@ Carolina
Let’s assume a sweep of crappy Tampa and the woeful Rams and Redskins. Let’s also assume a split with Atlanta. That’s 10-1 with games against Miami, Carolina (Twice), New England and Dallas. Let’s say we beat Dallas, who by week 15 might be in free fall. That’s 11-1. I don’t think Miami is a cake walk, but I’m calling that a win as well – 12-1. That means that even if we split with Carolina and lose to the Pats, we go 13-3. It could happen. The other interesting thing about this schedule is that there are no late season road games up North, a la Chicago the last couple of years.
Minnesota:
@ Pittsburgh
@ Green Bay
BYE
vs Detroit
vs Seattle
vs Chicago
@ Arizona
vs Cincinnati
@ Carolina
@ Chicago
vs NY Giants
Let’s assume that the Vikes beat Detroit, Seattle, Arizona, Carolina and split with Chicago. That’s 11-1. I’m going to go out on a limb and say Cincy will be on the down swing when the Vikes play them – 12-1. That leaves 3 games – Pittsburgh this weekend, @ Green Bay (in the Brett Favre media hype-til-you-puke bowl) and hosting the Giants on the last weekend. Baltimore would’ve helped this picture quite a bit if they had made that FG, but my gut is that the vikes split those first 2 and the Giants game is for all the marbles.
Giants:
vs Cards
@ Philly
vs San Diego
BYE
vs Atlanta
@ Denver
vs Dallas
vs Philly
@ Washington
vs Carolina
@ Minnesota
This is not an easy schedule. Let’s assume wins over Washington, Dallas and Carolina – 8-1. The cardinal game isn’t a walk, but that’s a win, ditto San Diego – 10-1. If we assume a split with Philly, the Gaints are 11-2 not counting 3 games – Atlanta, @ Denver and @ the vikings. IF the Saints do finish 13-3, the Giants would need to swwep those 3 games to get home field, due to their loss to the Saints.
Just for grins, let’s include the Falcons, who while not getting the same press as those top 3, have looked very good:
Atlanta:
@ Dallas
@ New Orleans
vs Washington
@ Carolina
@ Giants (November 22nd)
vs Tampa
vs Philly
vs New Orleans
@ NY Jets (December 20th)
vs Buffalo
@ Tampa
Again, let’s assume wins over Dallas, Washington, Tampa twice, Carolina, and Buffalo – that’s 10-1. Throw in a split with the Saints, and they’re 11-2 with Games at the Giants (in late November) at the Jets (in late December) and hosting Philly. In my mind, the best they can hope for is 1-2 in those games – 12-4
Now, things might look a lot different in a few weeks. Will some key player get hurt? When Will Brett Favre start throwing stupid picks again? Will some team that looks good now fall apart? Will a team like the Panthers rebound and look better than they do right now – that’s why they play the games. I didn’t look at all the convoluted tie-breakers, but let’s just say this Saints fans- start rooting for the Vikings to lose.

You Spent all that Time, Words and What ifs
to conclude Saints fans need to root for the Vikings to lose — no kidding!!!
Gonna go out on a limb and say this might be as worthless a post as has been seen on CSC in a long time. Of course, any and all posts that talk about “lack of respect” are also worthy candidates for waste of time and energy!!
Enjoy the journey folks, live in the moment. What we are all witnessing to this point is a one-of-a-kind event for Saints fans. Just enjoy it.

In all the Euphoria of How the Saints' Season
has unfolded thus far, it is natural for fans too get ahead of themselves. Actually, I enjoy many of your posts.
BUT, it is post like this (after 5 games) and any post (at anytime by a fan) that points to “lack of respect” that are the equivalent of talking just to talk. Time-tested experience knows that when a person talks, just to talk, they usually have nothing of value to offer at that time.
After beginning 5-0, emotion gets a hold of many a fan which tends to drive them to say something, anything!! Unfortunately, what they find when they look back is that they missed the beauty and exceptional memories that come with living in the moment and not hurrying the journey.

the whole thing was born
out a friend of mine’s constant talk about the Saints getting home field. So I wanted to take a look at the schedules and see if that was a real possibility. I’ll admit it is more than a little silly to seriously consider home field less than 1/3 of the way through the playoffs. But hey, if we weren’t setting dangerously high expectations for the Saints, we wouldn’t be the jumpy beaten down souls that we are!

I've been rooting for the Vikings to lose
since that 44-10 shellacking they gave us in the ’87 playoffs.

I'll be rooting for the Vikings to lose...
But not this weekend. I have three top teams I like. Saints #1. Bengals #2. And any team that beats the Pittsburgh Stoolers is #3. I have a few other teams I like after that but those are my top three. Shows you just how much I despise Pittsburgh.

The Saints and Bengals are my two favorite teams, also. I spent a few years in Pittsburgh when I was younger though, so I can’t hate on the Steel Curtain. There really aren’t any NFL teams I hate with a passion, though rarely do I pull for the Falcons or Raiders.

Then why haven’t you come over and played my version of the player pick ’em yet? Slacker. :)

I figured you had to have at least visited once or twice… maybe not since I borrowed your ideas? (I did give you credit for the idea of course.)

Thanks! No, I haven’t been over there. I started following them pretty closely in 1988 — the Icky Woods SB year, primarily because I despised Joe Montana at the time — but it’s never taken off into anything more than a strong passing interest. They’re the first team I check up on, when I get home from the games. “How did the Bengals do?” Always anxious to see that, watch them whenever they’re on TV and their game doesn’t conflict with the Saints’. A Who Dat / Who Dey Super Bowl would be like a dream come true. Really Who Dat / Who Ever, but if you want to put a cherry on the sundae, thems is my druthers.

Seriously, no wonder I like you — even when I occasionally want to smack you as well! ;) — because Bengals/Saints would be my dream SB as well.
Of late I’ve been in the bars because I can’t get DirectTV thanks to a stupid tree in the way. (Although I got news yesterday that there may be a chance it gets removed soon.) And it really sucks that it seems the Bengals and Saints are always on at the same time. Because of course I’m actually in Cincinnati so the Bengals game is always on the loudspeakers and the Browns games are always on in the back… getting any volume at all for the Saints games is a challenge and a half. Here’s hoping some of our (either our) games get flexed later in the year so that trend can get broken.

The Vikings have put up an impressive enough start to the season to be taken seriously, but they still seem destined for a handful of losses this year. I really thought they were going to drop the game to the Ravens this week, and they should have. Either way, though, that’s their third(at least, I don’t watch the Vikings) come-from-behind or nail-biter victory, and the three I’m thinking of were at home. And, while this is never a universal indicator of anything, they were all against teams that have been beaten soundly by other middle-of-the-pack teams. Jared Allen mentioned the adage this week that, “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.” You never know, especially with old man Farve at the reigns, but that probably won’t last a whole season.
