Jon Runyan

Anyone know what's up with Jon Runyan?.   This guy has been a beast for 13 years and has started every game for the last 12 seasons- never missing a start.  He had offseason surgery and seems to still want to play and the Saints are thin at OT.  He's 6'7" 330lbs and seems very, very even keeled and would be a good locker room presence.  I don't know much about what's up with him lately, but I think he would be good fit. Payton should know him well as he spent a year in Phila. with him.   I would think they could work out a deal for the next 12 games and playoffs that wouldn't break the bank.

interesting

why not, i would rather take a chance on a former pro bowler than a practice squad scrub.

The worry with Runyan

is that you don’t know whether he’ll last 12 games…or 1. He says he feels great (they always say that…remember Dan Morgan?), but he’s 35 and coming off microfracture surgery.

I’m with you, though—it couldn’t hurt. If he only plays one game, that’s okay, so long as he plays well.

he never missed a game yet

I think the gamble is a minimal risk. This guy is a player. Morgan had a history of missing games for injury. Runyan is the Brett Favre of OTs.

OK, sign him.

Tell Sean I said so. On to the Super Bowl!

rarified air

I know Drew breathes this air, but so do the upper crust left tackles in this league. Runyan, as Philinwood described, is the man. GET HIM SIGNED. Hey PW your flyers kicked our butt.

Hey, let's call Willie Roaf and see what HE's doing this year!

You guys kill me. Always living in the past. Runyan will be 36 years old next month. He worked out for Philly, Kansas City and Buffalo in September and couldn’t get signed. KANSAS CITY AND BUFFALO, hello…. He’s done. It’s over, Bob Seger. Turn the page.

Yeah, that's right. Bob Seger wears glasses on stage. So he can read the lyrics on the teleprompter.

Know why? Because he’s OLD! LIKE JON RUNYAN! It’s 2009! WAKE UP!!

That's like, really mature

our entire depth chart looks good except we have one weakness, OT depth. Now, from where I stand you have nothing positive to say on this, such as an alternative to Jon Runyan. Bear in mind Runyan was the starting tackle last year on a team that went to the NFC championship game and came within 7 points of the Super Bowl. He was THE ANCHOR of that line and an NFL poll in 2008 revealed that facing Jon Runyon on a screen pass was the scariest experience that NFL players encounter. Obviously prior to the end of last season he had something left in his tank. He would be a BACKUP, A BACKUP!! with years and years of experience to help as an asset for some of our younger OTs. He could come in during blowouts to keep them from being pushed to the limit physically, he could fill in for injuries. He could block on punts and field goals to reduce injury to others. It’s very unlikely he would be a problem with attitude. From your perspective, I guess we shouldn’t have signed John Carney (either time), or Darren Sharper, and Minnesota should put Favre on waivers!! Hey, let’s get rid of Brunell, he’s old!! At 35 years old, Runyon wouldn’t be the oldest player to play in the NFL by a longshot!!

Why not just come up with another suggestion or pipe down. That might take some intelligence- instead of attempting to make this a personal thing and say something so stupid as “(I’m ) always living in the past.).”

If the choice were Runyan or some guy named Foster who has started 2 NFL games, had knee surgery, never played since, and got waived by the Falcons AND the Rams!!! Duh, let’s save some money and go with Foster. He’s younger, that’s what’s important. Drew’s not that important to protect.

Phil,
This is not a focus group. We’re not responsible for scouting and signing players for the Saints. If I had a better player to suggest, I would have. But that’s not the point. The point is, Jon Runyan is a poor suggestion rooted in past his glories (which he will never come close to seeing again) and in your love for all things Philly and Eagles, which I despise. And in turn, I despise you for that and I always have. Stupid suggestion. I guess I could have just limited my comment to those two words. But it was SO stupid I had to use a ridiculous analogy. So instead of telling me publicly to pipe down, why don’t you contact me and we’ll discuss it privately. Don’t bother responding to me in this forum, because I won’t be reading your comments in the future, along with several other of your kind.

Saints need a backup

right? As far as I can tell, Bushrod’s injury is “minor”, and he should be back for the Giants game. I doubt the Saints are interested in signing a new starting LT for 12 games. That said, it’s clear that the depth at OT is wanting, so they must be looking for a backup out there. Would Runyan be interested in such a role. Would he even be useful in such a role?

I am very worried about this situation, but I don’t think Runyan is the answer. I’m not sure the new practice squad addition, Renardo Foster, is the answer either. I don’t know what or who the answer is.

Hey carolina dude

Flyers played well, but your Hurricanes looked good too – our new GT was “standing on his head” as they say. But, how awesome is Brind’amour still playing at this level after 20 years? I always liked him- future Hall of Famer I hope. Stujo would have gotten rid of him due to his age- “living in the past.” Haha

yep

He shut us down. When the canes won the cup, I remember old man Brind’amour taking a victory lap with the Stanley Cup. I wouldn’t mind seeing our “old” men like sharper and Carney taking a lap in Miami hoisting the hardware, and I don’t mean their walkers. HaHa. We just have to believe in the coaching staff, and that they make the right moves to protect Drew.

Age only enters the equation

when you’re talking about longetivity. Brown’s contract is up in February. They have to do something at the position either way before then. Why not go for the best available player, regardless? If it doesn’t work out, you’re no worse off than you already are and there will be better options in offseason free agency. Besides, Walter Jones is just as old as Runyan and is still more than serviceable, when 100% healthy. What about Rob Pettiti? How binding are UFL contracts? Couldn’t he just retire from that league and re-sign with the Saints?

well I like that you are offering options

I don’t know much about Walter Jones, but you offered the caveat “when he’s healthy.” Basiclly, Runyan started 11 straight seasons, healthy or not. He seems to be a guy that says “I can go” rather than “I can’t” which I like. Runyan may not want to relocate away from South Jersey and may not want to sit the bench. But, if he can and would, as a backup, I just don’t think you can do better in 2009-2010 and that’s what this is all about.

Could a 35 year-old's microfracture surgery go well?

I think the answer is no. I really don’t keep up with Free Agent O-lineman, so I don’t have any suggestions, just a possible reason why the saints haven’t done it.

I think the reason players like Runyan and D Brooks, Deuce etc don't get picked up

is their cost in dollars. Obviously they are a risk because of age, but the cost is probably the most prohibitive factor.
All the experience they bring to the table is huge, but there is the down side. I just would hate to see us get in a situation where we start losing momentum and possibly risk injury to Drew and others because of lack of depth at OT. Before Jamaal Brown went on IR I thought we were fine and he would come back, but that’s changed and even when Bushrod gets healthy, we are thin there. Another advantage of Runyan is he probably knows the Giants, Cowboys and Eagles defenses and defensive personnel better then any lineman in the league and 1-3 of those teams will probably wind up in the playoffs with us.
