The Reason Reggie Bush is Valuable
Joey Porter, Miami Dolphins linebacker:
"Our goal is to get to Reggie Bush often and not let him have the game to where he's hitting the seams and getting big gashes. Make him earn everything he gets, keep him under 2 yards a carry...
Go for it, Joey. Just don't get in the way of Drew throwing to Colston, Moore, Henderson, Meachem or Shockey. And move over when our other capable running backs, Thomas and Bell, are heading in your direction.
The Saints are so much more than Reggie Bush. But if opponents want to spend a significant amount of time focusing on just him, I'm not gonna complain.

Yeah, really trust what comes out of his mouth as much as you trust what comes out of Payton's mouth at press conferences...

Agreed
Porter is a master at head games. If he honestly thinks Bush is the root of their worries, he’s either been napping through film study this week, or the last two dozen teams we’ve faced have brought their A-game on defense, if only for one particular player.

just goes to show
what defenses are thinking, go watch some film. MJD is right, he’s is the second highest paid decoy next to Reggie.

…
the Saints are Sean Payton.
It’s Sean Payton’s team.
Reggie Bush is a part of that.
this Reggie Bush whining from fans is tiring.

So are the excuses. I pay $700 a season to watch this team play. I think I have the right to complain about whatever irks me.

not making excuses. and not necessarily saying that complaining is bad …
just saying that (especially at $760 a season) on the other hand why not enjoy the successes …
and save the complaints for actual short-comings …

you don't even want to know what I pay.
I’m very happy the Saints are doing so well. Worth every penny at this point.

considering the pictures you've taken at the games
I can guess what your tickets cost → something like $165/game.

I definitely agree. The games have been thoroughly entertaining this year on the whole. Except for maybe the Miami preseason game. That was a bit of snoozer.

and i used to feel like that too … kind of … or more like i wished he were living up more to the ‘hype’. but i started thinking … and once i get past the media nonsense, i really don’t see where he hurts the team. on top of that i feel like with him and Payton there is only upside, another level of play/play calling … so i don’t see where the ‘bad news, Reggie’s in the game’ vibes are coming from …

not in the norm
i (for some reason not based on statistics) believe reggie is a large part of this offense. he may not get the numbers he did his first season but i believe thats b/c teams do actually look for him on the field. maybe not so much in film session but play by play.
i really cant explain it….but i like having him out there just for his big play ability.
now i am not an idiot. we pay way too much money for a player that gets 57 yards a game.
sense any making not i’m

For the record, i meant no disrespect to Mr. Bush
I simply meant to express my belief that everything that comes out of players and coaches mouths in the week leading up to a game is all part of the chess match – head game of the NFL, and cannot be trusted.

Bush is a bust?
He is so dangerous that people have to account for him with one, sometimes two of their speediest players. This leaves GAPING holes all over the field. We have so many play makers that drawing defenders away from the ball means points on the board. Whoever scores them doesn’t matter. I wish there was an ‘assist’ stat in the NFL, just like in other sports, Reggie would lead the league every year.

Even if this was a running back WAS drawing multiple defensive assignments, how does double coverage on ANY one player leave GAPING holes ALL OVER the field? You could say the same thing about any player in the league that draws double coverage on a particular play. If it caused such DRASTIC mismatches everywhere else, why wouldn’t Kevin Walter or Owen Daniels be lighting up the stat sheets with receptions? Better question: why wouldn’t defenses just take their chances one on one, especially against a player who averages less than two receptions per season longer than 20 yards? I guess the “fear” just never, ever goes away, no matter how irrational it might be. Interesting. Kind of reminds me of a few ex-girlfriends of mine.

ahhh hemmmh
bush does as he is told, past seasons he did what he was told, make big plays, make them often… now (as we’ve all seen) there are many many more people on this o squad… and O is right! bush is part of this team, not THE team
I am (and so should everyone else) proud of the saints O… we dont have one “T.O.” on our squad… not one, everyone is willing to give to the greater good of the team
WINS! and lots of them….
If bush was out yelling at teammates or crying/whining he didn’t get the ball enough, well thats when id become upset
Trust me we don’t want a t.o. here… bush is a great player… not a bust. you just wait till sunday when we stuff bush down the fins throat…
p.s. i know how that last part sounded, and I’m ok with it..
huh?

if he keeps getting 7 touches a game...
he’s gonna start complaining! no self-respecting player should watch his career go down the drain after all the hype he’s received. I’m not saying cry now, but I wouldn’t blame him if after the season ended he decided to vamp.

agreed!
but i hope not… remember the season s still early… maybeeeeeeeee they are hiding him, holding him to unleash on someone worthy of being released on…
I think you will still see bush come alive… who knows, but I really hope he doesn’t leave us… thats some big shoes to fill!

Reggie
is one of many knives in the drawer. Ya’ got steak knives, carving knives, paring knives, (bread and) butter knives, and the all around useful cleaver! SP likes to keep them all sharp and use the right one at the right time to cut you up!
Pretty nice set of blades, Sean!

I don’t check this site everyday, so forgive the slow response. If you feel Reggie is a bust, that is your opinion. I don’t share it. Do I think he could be better? Hell yes. In hindsight, would I have spent a #2 pick on him? Probably not.
OK. GAPING holes all over the field may be a bit strong. But here is my reasoning. Every team is forced to account for Bush when he’s on the field. Many have to do so at the expense of doubling up our other tremendous playmakers. I never meant to suggest that that leaves people uncovered, but it does mean single coverage on a lot of guys who can beat single coverage. With an accurate passer like Brees, and more playmakers than (IMO) any other team can boast, single coverage is a GAPING hole. And it gets exploited every game. Could we do it without Bush? Probably. Could we do it as consistently or effectively. I don’t think so.
P.S. If Bush wants to start bitching about lack of touches, he might want to wait until after the hardware is on his finger.

Bottom line: Without Bush, the Saints are not undefeated AND we are not contenders. We are much better with him than we are without him.
