Ask The Falcoholic!
Yeah, it's me again, busting into your blog like the Kool-Aid Man through a courthouse wall. OH YEAH!
Obviously, this is a very big game for both of us. If you win, you put the Falcons down in a divisional hole so deep Lassie won't be able to tell the family about 'em. If we win, we close the gap and put a dent in that shiny armor of yours. If we tie, we're roundly mocked by everyone. The stakes are high!
Now I know you all detest me, but this is your opportunity to ask questions about the Falcons all week long. I'll do my best to contain my disdain for you, the common Saints fan, and answer all of them in a timely fashion. After all, you might be wondering why we got drilled by the Cowboys. Or why Michael Turner isn't doing well. Or why Dave the Falconer sleeps fitfully, haunted by dreams of not breaking a 40+ year streak of futility that has plagued him since his birth. You know, stuff like that.
If you wouldn't mind recommending this here FanPost so it stays up top for those asking questions, that'd be great. Fire away, jerks friends!

Why does Atlanta's offensive line suck?
by HB-NOLA on Oct 26, 2009 12:25 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I dunno about suck
Teams just need to push a non-stop, aggressive pass rush to defeat them. Why only the Dolphins and Cowboys have been able to figure this out so far is beyond me.

What’s the feelings there on the Dirty Birds defensive injuries for the upcoming showdown?
by NOSFan4Life on Oct 26, 2009 1:35 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The general feeling is "uh oh"
With a side of “we’re doomed.” I never put a loss down in indeliable ink before we play the game, but things don’t look very good for us right now.

says Dave
I on the other hand, like to lean on the slightly more optimistic side.
“uh oh”, yes, “we’re doomed”, not so much.
It’s a divisional game, all the stakes have changed. All predictions can go out the window. Even the dismal Panthers made a showing when they visited the Georgia Dome (and I don’t blame it for lack of Falcons defensive effort).
Missing Brian Williams (the CB) hurt against the Cowboys. Bad. Having Jamaal Anderson lining up at DT has been paying dividends. I bet the Falcons will be trying something new this week to spell the hole made by the Williams loss. Tye Hill maybe? Moore at safety with DeCoud creeping a little bit closer to the line at CB? There are options and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mike Smith try something in this situation.

I LOVE the Falcon-Saints rivarly
We honestly have the only rivalry in football, that is all friendly. We’ve had some epic games, where individuals were smiling and shaking hands after the game. The fans always seem to playfully jab but have great respect for each other. It’s what football should be about. There are exceptions of course. All in all, the Falcons games are the two I look forward to most in the year.
That all being said, IT’S ON!

I actually like ya Dave
That being said. When you saw us come back like we did today, did you pee in your pants a little. How are you planning on stopping any of our RB’s? What about the Brees? Can Ryan really handle the GW blitzes? And with him only being a sophomore, he’s still a young QB (fresh meat for Sharper). And how bad are those injuries gonna affect your game?
Don't worry I got your back cuz...
by TAYDIGGA on Oct 26, 2009 5:12 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Well now
1) Don’t run them at the middle of the line and you should be fine. Jamaal Anderson has morphed into a scary defensive tackle who is nimble enough to make the stop 9 times out of 10. I’m very worried about our ability to handle runs to the outside.
2) Abandon hope, all ye who defend against Brees. The only thing we can do is hit him and try to put ourselves in a good position for picks.
3) Ryan handles blitzes very well most of the time. That said, if we don’t get the ground game going, he’s going to be getting hit all game, and no quarterback in the league deals well with that.
4) The secondary is the biggest area of concern, followed by our rushing attack. Both of those have been hit with a critical injury, so I’m concerned.

I've got a question for you, Dave.
Why is it that the Falcons can take a free agent or rookie back and give them a probowl season, but they are worthless the next season?

You got me
I can’t figure out Turner. Many blame it on the offensive line, but if that’s the case, why is Jason Snelling averaging well over five yards a carry?

Snelling is decent, but he still isn’t as good as Turner when he is performing half-way decently.

So we can watch him throw a fit on the sideline when DeCoud nabs an interception right in front of him.
Seriously, I’m much more concerned about our ability to cover Marques Colston than Shockey, though every single one of your weapons is an issue for us. Could be a long game for our defense.

I think the Falcons are a pretty good team, but
the one difference between this year and last is you are now on the map. You will be scouted and game – planned on a level like the Big Boys now, not on the level of say the 09 Rams or Lions, or even the Bills. Ryan and Turner have footage now, and since they are young, there will be a core of plays that will be their favorites that will be in their comfort zone. So, now, every defense will know those plays inside and out. Not saying you won’t have a good productive season, but this is the NFL and this is the way it goes. Opposing teams will not be taken by surprise at all now. All your offensive and defensive tendencies will be memorized and gone over and over and your job will be much more difficult.

I think to some extent that's correct
And I would also point to a schedule that is light years more difficult than 2008’s, as well as Michael Turner’s bizarre backslide. We’re just not there yet.

Do you think Turner's backslide
has anything to do with how much he was used last year? Maybe they just used up 2-3 years worth of Turner without realizing it, and he’s really about 30 right now.

saint-sly, you have inspired me!
T’was the night before Monday and alone in the Dome
sat Saint-sly with laptop preparing a tome,
when up in the cheap seats there rose a slight clatter,
she simply looked up to see what was the matter.
Were Fans arriving early? Was something amiss?
Was there anything to possibly interrupt her bliss?
It’s Saintsational, smiling, his eyes big and bright.
"I just got here early." he said with delight.
"You see, this is special," as he showed a grin,
"the Saints will be here for their seventh win,
and it’s up to us Fans, both young and old,
to ensure that forever this story is told.
I, with my blog, and you, with your rhyme,
will tell all the people that there was a time
that not Giants nor Eagles or other birds that soar
could silence the Saints Fans or muffle their roar!
This is the year, the moment is now.
Some say we may lose but I don’t see how.
We have men forged from steel and men carved from stone,
and our coach on a pinnacle and standing alone.
"Let the games begin!" as Caesar would say,
The gladiator Saints will now have their day."
So, Saint-sly just sat there with a knowing smile
because she’s been waiting for such a long while.
"I hear you, Saintsational. It’s gonna’ be heaven.
Heck, we’ve been rebuilding since 1967!"
(Whew! It’s like the post-you-know-what cigarette!)

Matt Ryan
Dave,
Did you personally have high expectations for Matt Ryan? or were you at all caught off guard?
I never thought he was any good in college and was more shocked than most when he turned out to be such a great QB last year.
He is the single greatest reason why i will never again trust my own ability to judge talent from the NCAA ranks to the NFL.
by Zandor435 on Oct 26, 2009 3:44 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Many of my readers had faith
And I’ll be the first to admit that I was wrong about Ryan. I really thought he would be another in a long line of bust QBs for us, and I was disgusted that a general manager who promised us help along the offensive and defensive lines would throw away a pick on Ryan.
I’m a little sheepish about that now, of course. Who knows where his ceiling is, but Ryan’s already a pretty good young QB.

Sorry, couldn’t resist a line from Airplane.
Seriously now, how is your defensive secondary looking for this week? I see you lost an important CB to injury. Believe me, after last season, I feel your pain. I hope the injury bug doesn’t do a delayed hit on us this year.

Our secondary looked painfully bad this week, all the way around. We have a bunch of young cornerbacks with a ton of potential who make boneheaded mistakes, and our safeties can’t pick up the slack by themselves. I fear for the future.

A few questions:
1. How excited are you for this game?
2. If you guys were coming to the dome for this game instead of in ATL, how optimistic would you feel after last week?
3. How optimistic do you feel for this game now?
4. Any big injuries we should know of?
I’ll leave off the rest as I think that you and Dave will probably hit on the rest of the questions I would ask.
Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!
by skinnykinney on Oct 26, 2009 10:41 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Here we go
1) Enormously excited. Even if the game is sure to be challenging and many have already chalked us up as a loss, there’s something about being sure that you’re playing the best team in the league at any given moment that’s pretty awesome. If we should win, that’d be even better.
2) We are heading your way. I think my brother-in-law (a Patriots fan….boo, hiss) summed it up best when he told me the other day that the first game he saw the Saints potentially losing was in the Georgia Dome weeks away from now. I’m apprehensive, but again, it’s exciting.
3) I’m kind of in no-man’s land right now. Coming off a bad loss, one part of me believes the Falcons will rebound in spectacular fashion, while the other half believes they’ll have trouble coming into Nawlins strong. I’ll get a better sense of how I’m feeling by the weekend.
4) Brian Williams, cornerback, is out for the year, and that’s a killer. Wicked fast running back Jerious Norwood is out for the game. We are dinged up at a few other positions, as well, including a potentially lingering chest injury for Michael Turner. Oh, and then there’s rookie defensive tackle Peria Jerry, who is out for the year. Some tough breaks for us.

1. Does it bother many Falcons fans that Bobby Hebert so avidly supports the Saints, after playing for both teams?
2. On a scale of 1-10, how do you rate Chris Houston’s progression as an NFL cornerback?
3. Do you prefer the current black or the throwback red helmets?
4. Do you expect Tony Gonzalez to play beyond 2009?
5. If you could trade Jerious Norwood for Reggie Bush in a straight up swap, would you?
6. Would Brian Finneran start over Michael Jenkins, if he was black?
7. Have you ever worn a green knapsack to a Hootie and the Blowfish concert?
8. If you could temporarily shift the Falcons to another division to avoid being humiliated by the Saints twice this year, what division would you choose?
9. What are your impressions of offseason acquisition Verron Haynes thusfar?
10. In your opinion, which departed Falcon has been missed more over the past two seasons: Patrick Kerney or Allen Rossum?

Whoa, okay
1) Nah. We still love Hebert, despite his disgusting attachment to your team.
2) I’d say a 5. He’s grown enough to be serviceable, but he’s not the star we hoped he’d be by now.
3) Throwback red, without a doubt.
4) Yes. I’d say he’ll retire in 2011.
5) Of course. I love Norwood, but he can’t stay healthy and Bush is such a pass-catching threat. This is assuming we didn’t have to take on the rest of his gigantic contract, of course…
6) I don’t think so. I love Finn, but he’s been through two major leg surgeries and is just serviceable at this point. Jenkins is one of the best blocking receivers in the league.
7) You can call me a fool….but I’ve never done that. Or been to a Hootie and the Blowfish concert. And so forth.
8) Har har. If I could shift it, I’d head for the NFC West, with dreams of a cotton candy schedule dancing in my head.
9) He hasn’t done much. I’ll give it a solid “meh.”
10) Definitely Patrick Kerney. I’d love to have the pass rush he provided again on a consistent basis.

#5: Call me crazy, but
Bush has been pretty injury-prone, too. He is a big weapon as a receiver, but he’s been truly awful as a runner. Norwood’s been great as a runner (in his limited opportunities), when healthy. I think it’s much closer than most Saints fans would like to admit.

Apples to apples
One of these backs has a better yards per carry average:
5.7 to 3.7
One of these backs has a better yards per reception average:
9.2 to 7.5
One has a 25.5 yards per return average on kickoffs.
The other has a 7.5 yards per return average on punts.
Of those two return averages, one is below the league average. The other is above.
One of these backs is underutilized. The other is grossly overutilized.

I didn't compare
punts to kicks. I compared them both to their peers in the same category. One is above the league average, one is below.
A kick returner who never returns a kick? Sorry, that doesn’t sound like a kick returner to me.
And as I’ve said before, TDs should never be used as a comparative statistic. They’re products of yardage gained. Just because a player didn’t score himself, doesn’t mean the drive to which he contributed didn’t result in a TD by a teammate. Or even a FG.
That’s like counting periods in an essay and crowning the guy with the most the best writer. Nevermind that his average sentence was of the same length and cerebral magnitude as “See Spot run”. Nevermind that 20% of his periods were actually ellipses. It’s all about that back end punctuation, baby!

I understand your argument on Touchdowns, but a person’s ability to get in the endzone is VERY important. Points win games, not yards or YPC. TDs have to have some relevance.
Last week was a prime example, Roby took a kick, almost to the house. In the end we settled for a field goal.
If not for Brees talking Payton into the 4th down dive play, we wouldn’t have scored there. PT could not get into the endzone, I mark that as a strike against him, and I whole heartedly feel Bush would’ve found a way in.
The people who say, "Winning isn't everything," don't win very often.

“a person’s ability to get in the endzone is VERY important.”
There is no such ability. A person’s ability to elude defenders, break tackles, see gaps, react upon them, pivot, cut back, run proper pass routes, gain seperation in coverage, excel when necessary, etc., all inevitably lead to yardage gained.
YARDAGE GAINED in turn, leads to TDs. It’s important for TEAMS to score TDs, not specific individuals. If there was an exclusivity rule in place that ONLY a running back is eligible to score — kind of like ONLY a goalie can use his hands in soccer — THEN it would be of comparative importance.
“Roby took a kick, almost to the house. In the end we settled for a field goal.”
Again, it’s not on Roby to score TDs. The primary duty of a KR is to gain as many yards as possible per return, in order to set up the offense with good field position, thereby increasing the likelihood of a score of whatever kind. Returning the ball into the red zone, he accomplished that and more. Settling for a FG is on the offense. If Bush was returning kickoffs to the opponent’s 15, or breaking off similiarly huge runs or pass receptions on offense with any given regularity whatsoever, he’d give me nothing to gripe about.
“I whole heartedly feel Bush would’ve found a way in.”
If that’s true, then they should have called his number, instead of having Brees dive into a pile of defenders. We have four other backs just as capable as Bush, if not moreso, of advancing the ball into scoring position, in the event that he had been carted off the field on a stretcher, six points withstanding or not. I can’t very well say the same for our QB depth.
M*A*S*H unit scenarios aside, it’s whatever works. Whether if it’s one unstoppable battering ram that racks up Shaun Alexander type scoring tallies, or an endless array of one-trip-to-the-end-zone wonders, it hardly matters, as long as we’re scoring. And being in POSITION to score is just a huge, huge part of that.
Ever hear the cliche “winning is half the battle”? Well, being that the average distance of an NFL touchdown must be less than or equal to the average distance of an NFL play (which is roughly 6 yards) — the “end” zone DOES tend to live up to it’s name, in terms of yardage gained — I’d estimate pre-scoring play field position is roughly 95% of the battle. So yeah, if you want to give Reggie credit for his A+ “ability to score”, go ahead and prorate that 4.0 as 5% of his GPA. His below average production in every meaningful aspect of the game should round out the curve rather nicely.

did you notice Sports Center this week? How about his TD last week? How about his 19 yd TD vs. Eagles in Phila that broke their backs? He has had problem with consistency, but has made some great runs.

That's kinda what I meant
With my original comment, though. Yes, he can make big plays – and he is useful as a weapon and as a decoy… but I think that TD against the Dolphins backs up my point. It was a 10 yard run on a reverse – a junk/trick play. His other two attempts went for zero yards.
I hadn’t seen (or noticed) the run against the Eagles. That run was nice – one cut, then go! Usually he does too much dancing… Again, though, other than that run he had 9 runs for 14 yards. (Of course, if you always take away a guy’s best run he’s going to look worse, but 1.6 YPC?)
Payton does a great job using him in ways that give him the best chance for success, but he’s not a very good “Running Back”.

Hoo boy
1) I won’t go that far. I will say that we’ve done very well since the 2007 fiasco, and I’m happy with that. That was a tough year.
2) Oh man, that’s tough. The obvious answer would be Drew Brees, but I do think Matty Ice is the man now and will continue to be later, so it wouldn’t make sense to bring an admitted upgrade over an already potentially great young quarterback. I’d have to say Marques Colston. That man can sense a pass coming from 10 miles away.
3) That’s a better question for one of our readers closer to the action, but they’re both pretty damn loud. I’ve seen my fair share of penalties caused by crowd in both domes.
4) I wouldn’t say like a girl. More like a mountain lion.
5) Is that a question or a statement? My rage is everlasting.
6) Not yet, but it’s getting there in a hurry. Last week’s setback might dampen that for a little bit.
7) I think you guys win it something like 35-24. We’ll see.
8) Very awesome. In fact, I hope it happens.
9) BOO DAT? I got nothing.
10) Turner is, Norwood’s out. Now we got your former boy Aaron Stecker to help us out, though I doubt he’ll have much of a role.

#2 is a fun question
If he’s talking about this year only, it’s Brees. That’s a no-brainer.
But if we’re talking about the rest of their careers, you’d have to weigh 5+ years of Brees (including his eventual decline) versus 10+ years of Ryan (as he is still improving). Very close, but I’d probably keep Ryan.
Dave’s answer of Colston is interesting, but he’s already had some issues with injuries (and the word microfracture scares the crap outta me, even if he seems to be back 100%). I think Payton’s system and Brees make him look a bit better than he actually is (don’t get me wrong, I still think he’s great), and I’m a huge Roddy White guy, so I’ll take a pass on him, too.
I would consider Sedrick Ellis, if they hadn’t just drafted Peria Jerry (even though he’s hurt now). We could use a long-term upgrade at OLB, but the Saints don’t have that. At MLB, Curtis Lofton is younger (and maybe better) than Vilma. I wouldn’t touch Will Smith or Charles Grant if my life depended on it (and Kroy Biermann is contributing well this year). I seriously considered Tracy Porter. Very seriously. We have tons of youth at Cornerback, but I’m not sure how much quality. I just haven’t seen Porter enough to know for sure that he’s an upgrade. Do you guys think he’s #1 CB quality?
As silly as this might sound, I think I might take Jahri Evans. The middle of the Falcons O-Line is definitely a weak spot. As much as I love Harvey Dahl, he’s not great in pass protection, plus he’s 2 years older. Justin Blaylock is a year younger, but he’s just “a guy”. I know Evans would be an upgrade somewhere on their O-Line… So I’ll take a Lineman from this offensive juggernaut – heck, maybe I should take Brees. :)
It’s interesting that many of the strengths/weaknesses and age/youth spots are fairly similar on these two teams.

He's an extremely risky play
Mike Smith might be talking about him getting more carries, but it’s one of those classic “I’ll believe it when I see it” moments. My expectations for Snelling are something like 12 carries for 50 yards, 2 catches for 15 yards and maybe a TD. You’re rolling the dice, my friend.

A few RB suggestions, based on who’s available in my 12 team leagues:
Shonn Greene
Justin Fargas
Correll Buckhalter
Le’Ron McClain
Jerome Harrison
Justin Forsett
Heath Evans
Chad Simpson
Garrett Wolfe
Lawrence Vickers
Jacob Hester
Jason Wright
Brandon Jackson
Michael Bush
I excluded players with a bye in Week 8. Evans might be worth a shot. He seems to be getting red zone work. Even this past week, he came pretty close to punching it in.

On the Saints and Falcons meeting in the playoffs
This is my nightmare: the Saints go 14-2, win home-field advantage, and in their first game in the Dome they meet the 6th-seed Atlanta Falcons, fresh off a wild-card victory against…whoever.
And the Falcons win.
I have to wonder: is this season an attempt by Fate to make amends for everything we’ve ever been put through…or a fiendishly clever plot to torture us like we’ve never been tortured before?
Anyway: I figure my nightmare is Dave’s dream (and in his version, it ends on a podium in Miami).

Oh oh!
I finally saw some footage of the game. Reggie was trying to block for Drew. Pathetic. Reggie’s knees were bent, his back was curled forward, and his head was down. He crumbled like a pile of sugar cubes. Then I saw Drew make the block that allowed Reggie to get up enough steam to fly into the end zone.
I’m not a Reggie basher by any stretch but, for God’s sake, block like you got a pair!!!!

i know what this will sound like
but if you’re talking about the play i’m thinking of then initially i thought that Porter straight bulldozed him. On the replay after that, it looked like Bush was starting to lose his balance right before Porter got to him. He still got lit up like a Xmas tree but I think he was losing his balance. I’ve notice also that usually whenever Reggie picks up the blitz, he jumps out at them trying to knock them down instead of staying on his feet. Just saying how I perceived it. I could be wrong though. Anyways, Reggie’s made a few blocks for Drew on blitzes that gives him that extra 3 seconds for the TD pass.

When a missed block results in a sack it does sort of stand out.

Yeah, I have a feeling it was supposed to be a quick pass, like 3 step drop or something, and Bush wasn’t expecting to have to do anything but ole’ the guy. That’s what he gets for not going full every down.

Falcontastic!
1. Will the Kardashians ruin Reggie Bush? (Are they responsible for holding him back already?!)
2. Shockey or Gonzales. Which one is better?
3. How could the Falcons let go of Brooking? He’s playing really well with Dallas and is a major leader in their locker room.
4. Now that KC is getting the shaft from LJ’s tweets, which is the next team that will fall victim to Twitter?
5. How the heck did the Cowboys beat the Falcs? Did you answer that yet? This thread is super long with lots of words and stuff.
6. After Roddy, I don’t even know who else plays wide receiver for the Falcons. Are they that quiet or am I that out of it?

11. What is the deal with Atlanta taking old Saints players and trying to use them against us? It’s awful. Hebert, Horn, and now Stecker. It’s like Atlanta secretly loves New Orleans.

1, 2, 3....
1) Nah. I think Reggie’s major problem is that he doesn’t hit the hole hard enough and run with enough power. Forget the Kardashians, forget his MVP talk and forget the hand-wringing over his role. If he was able to fix those issues, I think he’d be much better off. Just my uninformed opinion.
2) Gonzalez, and it’s not even close.
3) He looked washed up with us, locker room leadership aside. I love the guy and I’m glad he’s doing well this season, but I don’t think he’s got more than maybe one more season in the tank and he was blocking younger players.
4) Won’t be the Falcons, since there’s only a small handful of them currently on Twitter. Let’s say the Patriots, because Tom Brady tweets his lack of love for football and dreams of pursuing a para-sailing career.
5) They pressured Matt Ryan, beat up our offensive line and played an aggressive brand of football that victimized our secondary. There’s some more words n’ stuff for ya, xencuts!
6) A little bit of both. Michael Jenkins and Brian Finneran should be familiar names, but Marty Booker is elderly and Eric Weems is a newcomer. Now you know.
7) Sadly, no. I’ll be working through the game, so I’ll have to get my watching in when I can.
8) Nope, Boston Celtics fan. I have a very weird background. Don’t ask.
9) If you’re in the ATL, you don’t eat sushi. You eat entire cows smothered in Coca-Cola.
10) Hey, thanks!
11) We just love what it does to Saints fans. Such delicious sadness!

3. What do you anticipate your overall record being if the Saints and Falcons never meet this season

Not nearly as good
1) But they could still go 10-6 (with likely losses to the Giants and maybe the Jets) and squeak in, so I don’t think it’s a killer. It wouldn’t help, though.
2) Better!
3) I’ll assume you mean crossing those games out of the schedule. In that case, I’d say 10-4 or 9-5. I am operating under the assumption that we’re going to lose both games, but I think they’ll both be tough, competitive contests.

Dave, what do you think of the Giants and Jets, really? Both teams looked overhyped to me. On the other hand, I’d hate to have to play Pittsburgh or New England.
Supposedly the Saints have one of the easier schedules from here on out. As a true long time fan, I don’t drink the coolaid but instead mope around looking for the potential problem that will bring down this season. Other than something totally lame like the injury bug, what do you see as the Saints’s weaknesses? Do you believe in their wins? Do you still think that PT is better than Mike Bell (The Great) ?
Okay, time to go trick or treatin’! (Drinkin’)

Eh
Jets I think are overhyped, but the Giants are still a very good team that’s maybe struggling a little now. Doesn’t make it any less impressive that you beat them down like that.
I think your biggest potential weakness is whether the defense can continue to do what it’s been doing. Is this real, long-lasting improvement, or is it a short-term thing? My money’s on the former, but you never know. And yes, I still believe PT is better than Bell, even if Sean Payton doesn’t.

If these lines ever worked consistently
sports gambling would collapse.

If we're talking Saints
and the spread we’re something like 14-1 (Sean Payton era)when favored and covering, thats pretty consistent. Happy Birthday SAINTS!

The Over is the Play
as far as betting the Saints games. They’re close to covering that on their pts. alone, this wk. 55.

Commemorative Win
What was the result of the Saints’ first game EVER?
This is the first game after the anniversary . . . here’s to hoping for history to repeat itself, at least for one game. Don’t really want the rest of that season.

In the Saints' First Game Ever
we received the ball and ran it in for a touchdown! So, at one point in time the Saints had scored EVERY time they had the ball! However, I believe we lost the game.
Kind of like “tying the world record” in bowling by rolling a strike in the first frame?
Fat, dumb, and happy. Hell, two out of three ain't bad!
