Thomas and Bell - The same player
There seems to be a lot of jumping on and off the Thomas and Bell bandwagons by Saints fans. Thomas goes down, and Bell has two huge games, and suddenly Bell is the next big thing. The Bell goes down, Thomas has two great games (while we got very little done in the passing game), and PT is suddenly the MVP. Now Bell comes in for our second half comeback against the Dolphins, and Bell is "the best running back on the team."
This is a waste of energy Saints fans. They are basically the same player.
I mean this as no disrespect to either back, as they are both having phenomenal seasons, but there's little to no difference between their running styles, or their effectiveness. Both are hard runners, who find gaps and push ahead for 2-3 yards after every initial hit (unlike some backs..., [cough] Reggie [cough]). Both have remarkable quickness when they break past the point of attack. Both are averaging between 4.5-5.1 ypc in the games where they are featured. And both have had the opportunity to play only the second half of a game, when they used their fresh legs to gash HUGE holes in the defenses. (PT against Buffalo, 14 carries for 126, 9.0 ypc; MB against Miami, 12 carries for 80, 6.7 ypc). They are literally interchangable.
And this is a remarkable boon for the Saints offense. The Saints can rely on having a strong back ready for tough running throughout the game, because they have two equally effective backs to handle the load. And when you consider that they have the ultimate change of pace back in Bush, it's no surprise that their running attack has been unstoppable.
So stop worrying about who's the #1 back, or who should be the feature back. There is no #1 back; There will be no feature back. Just a two-headed monster terrifying opposing defenses.

At last
the voice of reason. A fresh Bell is better than a tired Thomas. A fresh Thomas is better than a tired Bell. And Bush, hell y’all, he’s got gold shoes. ’Nuff said!
Seriously, folks, although Bush seems to be the weaker of the three it is still a triple threat that the opposition takes very seriously. With Sean Payton at the helm, any one of them could turn into a receiver at the drop of a hat! With Colston and Co. on the outside don’t you think the linebackers are seeing quadrouple? Instead of the wildcat, I think the Saints could invent the Rabid Dog and start handing off to wide receivers. With this bunch, the sky is the limit!!!!
As I’ve said before, I’m sure a few times during a game Payton sends in a play, turns to the team on the sideline and says, “Y’all watch this shit!”
Haven’t had this much fun since my divorce! Gave you a rec there, thekourt!

I have a feeling this is in response to some of my posts.
I’ve ALWAYS been a fan of Bell. I never cared much for PT. They are two VERY different backs.
Bell – has excellent vision, good pop, strong and aggressive. Plays bigger than he is, but he’s got poor stamina. Relies on initiating contact or making a quick move to break free.
Thomas – has decent vision, decent pop, aggressive to the hole (not necessarily with contact), and very good balance. Relies on strong downhill running and balance to break arm tackles.
In the end, I think Bell is a better runningback. Vision is one of the most important traits for a back to have. He reminds me a lot of Emmitt Smith in his running style, ability to follow blockers, and finishing of the play. Bell kills himself for that last yard every play.
There have been other backs similar to Thomas that were only successful for a short time. Jamal Anderson and Shaun Alexander come to mind right away. These were downhill runners that ran hard through arm tackles and relied on balance to keep their feet for some big gains. Defenses adjusted after 1 or 2 seasons at the most and understood they needed to get solid contact and wrap them up in order to be successful. The result is neither of them being productive anymore. Moreso Jamal than Shaun. I think Shaun’s injury had a lot to do with everything as well.
The point is, Mike Bell will be good consistently each and every week. Thomas will go out one week and rack up 150 yards, then post 50 the following week. It’s all dependent on how the other team tackles.
Bell should get the majority of the carries with Thomas spelling him and Bush getting his change of pace looks. That’s my two cents worth.

While I don’t necessarily agree with your assessments/comparisons, I do agree that their running styles are quite different.

SAINTS
I think the Saints need to keep doing what they do but….use Shockey more. He seems like a player that needs to be more featured in games…his tempo and spirit are something that is needed more often in games…like the Dolphin game

Amen to the Shockey plan! The guy’s a maniac. I love it!

i believe
that most teams play the 2 back system effectivly including the saints(who happen to play 3)
unless you have a back like adrian peterson thats the smart way to play it and i like the shockey plan also he has great hands and is always pumped up to play

Even the Vikings give Chester Taylor 8-9 touches per game. The glory days of the workhorse feature back are pretty much dead and buried in today’s NFL.

Thomas and Bell are very DIFFERENT backs
Pierre Thomas is a little quicker than Bell and uses small shoulder movements to break tackles before or during his cut…
Mike Bell is a bruiser, the only shrug his shoulder does is INTO a linebacker before he makes his cut.
They are both one cut runners with good speed, but Pierre is slightly more elusive while Bell is slightly stronger/meaner.
That being said I love that we have both of them and can honestly say SP is doing a great job using them both, with a little Reggie added in to keep the linebackers honest with the outside run options.
One question though…..
Anyone else think Bell should run the first half and let Pierre take over in the second? With Bell’s downhill hit anything in front me style of running would that wear down a Def. more for Pierre to be more effective in the second half?

You could argue the same point the other way. Bruisers do well late in the game. Look at Deuce’s totals in the 4th quarters of games.

i actually think bell is a better option in the second half. after the D has been on the field for an entire half, thier legs aren’t as fresh. thats when bell can really do his damage.(see chaning crowder)
of course, really cant disagree with bell playing the first half either. i see your point
