What's going on in Reggie's head?

Check out this story in Sporting News. Forget the undefeated season angle...they're trying to make too much of it. Of course the Saints could go undefeated; so could Colts or the Broncos. So could any team that hasn't been defeated yet. Big deal (unless Reggie has just jinxed us).

No, the interesting part is this:

Bush also addressed the criticism he’s received for not living up to expectations as a pro.

"Once I do win an NFL MVP, once we do win a Super Bowl, once I am in the Pro Bowl, it's going to be that much more special because of the criticism that I had to come through. Because of the work I've put into it, it'll mean that much more to me," Bush told Montemayor.

I must admit, I'm floored. Reggie has been regressing all season. The criticism is all valid. He looks less like a potential MVP than he ever has—and apparently, based on his playing time, Sean Payton agrees.

So what is going on in Reggie's head? Is he really delusional? Or is he just putting up a front, saying what needs to be said to keep those marketing contracts coming?

Because I gotta say, Reggie: it looks more and more like your train left the station long ago. Maybe you should stop pacing and call a cab.

poor regie.......

i would love to see him in 06 or 08 form again, but he has simply been a liability so far. piere dose more with screens, bell runs harder, neither of them fumble.

regie has issues getting 5 yrds on a punt……..

but don’t jump on the hate train yet, if he picks it up later down the season, then we can all get back on the bandwagon. unless he actually starts “loosing” us games, leave the hate until the season is over.

You know who led us in interceptions last year?

Jason David. None of those interceptions hurt us. But David did, and eventually we used his roster spot on someone who could contribute more, and more consistently.

Reggie should learn that lesson.

I'm getting really tired of this "hate" bs

Criticism is not hatred, and Reggie is not above criticism; and if I didn’t care, I wouldn’t bother to criticize. I’d like to see him return to last year’s form as well. More than that, I’d like to see him become an MVP-caliber player. He’s not even close, and he’s further away now than ever before. I really do worry for his state of mind, because delusions of grandeur don’t make or keep a person “mentally strong.”

Reggie needs to start hanging out with Mike Bell more than he does with Kim. Mike would teach him a different kind of banging…the kind he was drafted for.

I think it’s starting to get to him. He’s getting angrier and angrier.

No, it's not Reggie Bush

I remain a fan and supporter of Reggie, and I hope he gets his head on straight…or whatever problem is keeping him from producing…and returns to form.

What I hate (there’s that word) is all this “hater” nonsense every time you criticize someone or disagree about something. It gets old.

Just another year again

I did not like the premadonna last year and he has not shown me anything this year. For every one yard he has gained, there are 50 that he lost . I think he has been overwhelmed by the NFL defenses and fast as he is, there are DB’s just as fast. And most DB’s are bigger to boot. Looks to me that his decoy status is diminishing and when that happens he could make a great water boy. The Saints don’t need him to win. He is almost out of the rotation already. Sorry but I just can’t see him being worth the money he’s paid.

I totally agree but

Aint happened in three years. Why should it start now. I really hope he does come around or he will be juking his way out of NO. Darren Sproles in San Diego is a little smaller than Reggie and he has a lot more yards than Reggie but he runs with more attitude. I think Reggie is scared he is going to get hurt and runs a little hesitant unless he is out in the open. He is use to (USC) student body right or left

why question hiim

he def has ability. its not like hes 35, and he certainly doesnt get a micheal turner -esque number of carries. if becoming a mvp, superbowl champion, and probowler are his goals, then whats the problem? he has a very legitimate shot at two out of the three (maybe not probowl this year).

now, im the first to admit that he has had a horrible year so far. besides the fumbles and the horrible punt returns (the punt return blocking hasnt been great either, though). he has put up the same kind of avg’s, except with fewer touches and fewer yards. right now our offense is completely loaded. picture bruce willis in pulp fiction when hes looking around the pawn shop just wondering how hes going to kill zed downstairs (the hammer? no, the baseball bat? no, the chainsaw? no, the samurai sword? oh yeah!). that is what peyton and brees go through every play. so, give the guy a break, we might need more of him later in the season.

Reggie doesn't need a break

He needs to wake up. I’m on board with everyone about his ability, and I don’t want us to lose him to some other team. But if he doesn’t start contributing more, there’s going to be a contract crisis, and I’m not sure it’s going to go Reggie’s way.

I’d hate to see him go to another team and become the next Barry Sanders; but it would be better than him staying with the Saints and becoming the next Vaughn Dunbar.

Agreed

That comment was really over the top. Reggie’s rushing average has actually taken a slight uptick this season. And he’s been a good teammate and a good member of the community.

But notice something else Saint-Sly wrote:

“The Saints don’t need him to win. He is almost out of the rotation already.”

I’m afraid that’s true. And it’s a pity, because I’d like for Reggie to be successful in his own right, and not just go along for the ride.

He has been a good player. But we thought we were drafting a great player. I just wonder if the fame and riches have gone to his head, and become his top priorities—and football is now a distant third.

Mike Bell said he got the big head in Denver. Since then he’s been traded around and became a Free agent when we got him, Now he’s humble, hungry and Producing for a lot less money. He will end up in the big bucks again with the Saints. That’s how you do it.

by saint-sly on Oct 28, 2009 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

how can you wonder if football is a distant third?

i don’t get this train of thought…dude is accepting his role, he’s not complaining or making a big deal about it; we’ve read about his off-season dedication to rehabilitating and the dude even admitted to how he could hit the hole better and worked on it…where do comments like this come from?! I can respect people who don’t think he’s a great running back and who think he could do better at this and that on the field but when you “wonder if the fame and riches have gone to his head…and football is now a distant third” then I just can’t get that. The dude is talking about being an MVP and his team going to the superbowl. Last time I checked, that’s football related. Someone said earlier that they can’t disagree without being called a hater. I’ll strike the difference between a hater and someone who just has a different opinion. People like Fusoya (spelling) say constructive and sensible things that I may not agree with but I respect.. It’s not this immature, Kim Kardashian this or he thinks he’s that crap. Grow up!! Quit assigning to the dude crap that he’s either never did or that you’ll never get to know if he believes or thinks or whatever because 1) it’s not football related or 2) you don’t know him.

Tay, I did say I wonder…that means I don’t know, and I’m not trying to claim that I have some sort of inside information. But sometimes on the field it seems as though his heart isn’t in it. I remember the game against Minnesota when he ran with abandon and scored 2 TDs and nearly a third on punt returns. Compare that to now…he looks lost back there.

Besides which: his acceptance of a more limited role could just as easily be evidence that he doesn’t care anymore. Whether that’s the case or not, I do not know—since I don’t know Reggie personally. But I still have to wonder what the problem is, because it’s my team and I care what goes on. Reggie just doesn’t look like he’s all there anymore.

MVP

Did you see his latest interview ? Says he;s gonna win the MVP, Pro Bowl, and Super Bowl. Think the guy is day trippin. I love the Saints more than anyone. Been watching since the very first kick off but the past is the past. The only thing that matters is now. The man has had three years to prove himself but can’t get it right and is still not showing it this year. I guess I’m the only one who sees it…………………..Reggie will account for 50-60 forward yards a game but watch how many yards he runs backward or sideways for losses. Add them up and subtract from his 50-60 and see what you got. Add in a fumble or two. Totals up to a loss in my book unless Bell, Thomas, Brees, Colston, Shockey, Henderson or somebody bails him out.
Tell ya what………………….If he starts breaking out and doing his thing, I’m all for it. Love to see it happen. I have been waiting patiently and will continue to do so cause they aint nuttin I can do about it. And………… a primadonna is someone that thinks he’s all that and a bag of candy. I’ll just sit back and watch.

by saint-sly on Oct 28, 2009 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

In fairness, any yards he loses dancing or circling back are included in his cumulative average, so there’s no need to subtract them from his paltry totals. Still, his yards per carry average would undoubtedly improve, if he used his vision to see the cutback lanes, instead of constantly trying to out race defenders to the corner. I fully comprehend that his game is built on speed, but there are still nuances associated with style of running that he simply does not utilize. Barry Sanders juked and circled back also, but he was ALWAYS looking for that stop-on-a-dime cutback inside. If it wasn’t there, THEN he’d turn on the jets and attempt to make the most out of the non-shortest path between the backfield and the goal line. Therein lies the difference between a HOF career and aimless/gyroscopic mediocrity.

I think

everyone should start thinking about him as a football player and not a super star. That way when he does something stupid we just think it’s normal. When he does something great we can imagine that one day he will do this on a consistant basis and we will all be surprised!

by dmcgoey on Oct 28, 2009 5:32 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Wouldn’t that entail not starting topics concerning his performance (or lack thereof)? I mean, you’re right, if Lynell Hamilton was getting 6 or 7 touches a game and putting up Reggie Bush-like numbers, no one would be bitching. Maybe a “what’s the point of giving this chump so many carries?” snide remark once every couple of weeks, but nowhere near the rag-tag job Bush gets.

I’m not above admitting that all players aren’t treated equally by the fans and the media. They’re also not paid equally. Nor are they of equal talent. Nor do they produce equally. Nor are they given equal opportunity to produce. It all comes with the territory of being a high profile, early round draft choice at a ridiculously visible (read: easily-monitored) position.

All three of those factors come into play. How many threads do you see on this site about Jonathan Goodwin? Would you see a few more, if he was a second overall pick? Considering centers are almost never selected in the first round, you bet your ass you would. He’d inevitably be watched closer than ever other center in the league and likely be criticized for flaws many other starting centers get away on a weekly basis.

Of course, an awfully high percentage of casual fan perception is based strictly on what they pick up on in the media, as well as what they understand to be the norm, in terms of skill progression, playing time, etc. Take Jonathan Sullivan, for example. Suppose he had been plugged into the starting lineup from Day One, never had heat-related issues in training camp, never got injured, seldom made a tackle … mainly just lingered there, as a fat, first round nothing-special cog on a steadily-improving defense. How long do you think it would take before fans started questioning the pick? Let me answer that. Considerably LESS time than it would take them to question a seventh round starting DT, yet considerably MORE time than it would take them to question a first round QB, RB, WR, CB, etc. If you don’t understand why, shame on you.

"Paralyze resistance with persistence" -Woody Hayes

by coldpizza on Oct 29, 2009 1:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, on the Sullivan example, considerably LESS time than if the defense wasn’t showing signs of improvement, or wasn’t playing up to par on the whole. When things are going wrong, people go looking for a scapegoat. That’s just human nature. Not that that’s the case with Reggie and/or the Saints this season. Not even by a longshot. I’m just saying that the State of the Union does quite often play a heavy role in the formative stages of public opinion, general consensus, whatever you feel like labeling it.

you can't trust the media...

I just watched NFL primetime on ESPN and they played a snippet of what Reggie said. Here’s the actual transcript that puts it into context. Not only that they showed a play where he missed a block and made it seem like he has been horrible at it, even though he’s been really good at it. They take anything “hot” and make a story out of it. It’s ironic because in school they make fun of this type of crap all the time…but the “big” companies everyone wants to work for bring this crap to the table time and time again.

Bush is not out of the rotation

He’s in for a very significant amount of plays, he just doesn’t get as many touches.

While he missed a key block last game, he has been recognized for his ability to pass block, which is another reason he’s in on a lot of passing downs. He gets on the field for around 15-20 or more plays a game. He may only see 9 touches, but he’s still a big part of the offense. You can’t expect him to be in for 30 plays a game. We have a three-back system. There are only so many plays to give out.

I look at it like this. They start off with Bush initially, because when he’s on, he’s REALLY on. He’s like a shooting star, doesn’t happen often, doesn’t last long, but it’s special when it does. If he gets on a roll, he will see more carries.

They put PT in if Bush doesn’t do anything more than average. If PT starts hitting the defense for 4+ yards a carry or breaking a few for 10+, he sees more reps.

If PT is just doing average, in goes Bell. By that time it’s pushing mid-second quarter or later, the defense is tired, and Bell is usually a great change of pace and bruises his way for some good gains.

So, by the second half, Payton knows who his hot back is, and the second half will show it in numbers and touches. Essentially, two backs will have very similar touches and plays, and one will have maybe 20% more than each of them.

In the event the Saints are forced to go to the pass more, you’ll see more Reggie Bush, because he is the starter for the 4 min and 2 min offenses.

It’s a good scheme and good rotation. The reason none of the backs are mad is because none of them are really lauded over any of the others. It’s all performance driven and/or situation driven.

The people who say, "Winning isn't everything," don't win very often.

If stupidity is a cancer, you're terminal.

In perspective

I hate that the media only showed us that particular quote….Reggie’s wrods right BEFORE he said that is that the Saints are focusing on one game at a tiime and the Monday night game against Atlanta is the only thing in their sites right now….that being said..then he goes into the MVP, undefeated, Pro Bowl quote.

They took that sentence out of context and it annoys me, OF COURSE he thinks we CAN (not WILL) go undefeated what kind of competitor wouldn’t? Same with the MVP/Pro Bowl thing. Why be a pro athlete if you dont plan on being one of the best?

And finally, I have been one of those fans that has been going back and forth across the fence between Reggie lover and hater. I’ve decided to firmly plant myself in support of Reggie until the day we get rid of him. Like Billy Miller tweeted the guy can do things that no one else can, like an 18 foot leap through the air over a defender to score….His punt returns have been atrocious, but I blame the coverage more than him. He has had defenders within 5 yards of him on all but 2 punts this year. I like the way SP is using him this year with PT Cruiser and Mike “Ring My” Bell get the majority of the carries and Reggie doing the change up thing. And here is a quick question to all the fans out there, why can Chris Johnson get out to the Sidelines and Reggie cant? They are built similiar and Reggie is just as fast at CJ. Any answers to that, that someone might have noticed on a why tip, that I missed would be appreciated

by Lil_joe692 on Oct 29, 2009 11:59 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Because Chris Johnson has an inside game as well, making defenders leery of a cutback. Their hesitation in anticipating his move is what inevitably affords him additional real estate in either direction. Bush is a one trick pony. He seeks to turn the corner practically every time he touches the ball. There’s no reason for a defender to hesitate, if he knows what to expect. At that point, it’s all about pursuit and wrapping up.

At least

you know the guy is playing with the right attitude imo. Has he ever questioned how good of an NFL player he has been? I’m sure he has plenty of times before. The feeling that I got from that statement is confidence. I’ve always played sports since I was young. One thing I lacked when I was younger was a bit of confidence, especially in things that I didn’t excell in. I played baseball and basketball on leagues and always thought I was a good player but I also thought I wasn’t a very good batter or scorer in basketball. As I got older, I got more confident about it all. Playing football with my friends, I didn’t think anyone could match up with me 1 on 1 or even 2 on 1(I always played WR) and that when the ball was in the air, I was coming down with it if i could get a hand on it. I was confident, borderline cocky in football. Reggie, I feel, is the same way as I was and still am. Believes he can be the best player on the field and will be. He might not have played as well as last year(pre injury) or in 06 but he hasn’t been as bad as alot of ppl like to try to say. Anyways, he shows confidence and I like it and dont’ think his head is in the wrong place.

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!
