Random thought regarding fullback
What member of the Saints is 5-11 and 237 lbs? And what member of the Saints is 6-0 and 235 lbs?
If you guessed Kyle Eckel as the answer to the first question, you'd be right. And the answer to the second? Lynell Hamilton. Forgotten Mr. Photo Op.
Eckel gives away an inch and fifteen pounds to Heath Evans. That's a significant amount of mass for a lead blocker not to have. He's played more than Hamilton, so Photo Op's stats are kinda questionable in comparison...but here goes anyway. Eckel, 3.0 per carry. Hamilton, 4.8.
The big question would be, can Hamilton play fullback? Could he take the pounding of being a lead blocker, and can he pass protect? Maybe, maybe not...don't know. But it sure would be interesting to have Thomas (or Bell, or Bush) share the backfield with Hamilton in a T-formation, rather than an I. Who do you key on?
Just thinking out loud...

Gotta get thru this Mon.Nite game
and see if this Eckel guy can fill in for Evans. Different formations w/2 TE’s one in backfield,Strief, Hamilton(photo-op) split back (Bush/Thomas) what ever it takes get thru Mon. and go from there….

Found this morning:
Hamilton practices at fullback
Also practicing at fullback for the Saints were running back Lynell Hamilton and blocking tight end David Thomas.
Hamilton has routinely played fullback on the scout team this season and said he sometimes played fullback at San Diego State.

I Like the Concept
But the timing is a little tough for this week. Nonetheless, they should absolutely try it (and it appears they are), even if it means he only knows 12-15 plays at FB and the main burden of knowing more of the playbook is on Eckel. Throw Dave Thomas in there for a few, and we should be ok. Don’t get me wrong, losinf Evans is big, but we should be OK.

I kinda suspect that they’ll use Hamilton more this work, simply because he already knows the playbook and is familiar with the other players. Just learning the terminology and getting in synch with everyone else (every quarterback calls a cadence differently) will take a week for Eckels. He may not even be activated…who knows but Payton at this stage?
I said before the season that only injuries could stop us. Evans is a bigger injury than Brown. Just pray for our secondary, with is like a winning lotto check—worth millions and paper-thin.

“Evans is a bigger injury than Brown.”
You’re kidding, right? I’m not even a Jammal Brown fan, but I would never go so far as to compare the loss of a starting LT to the loss of a journeyman FB.

I agree...
While Bushrod as down a commendable job, JB was a much bigger loss. I think the intangibles that Evans brings to the team is the biggest loss of him going out (leadership etc.) more so than his on-the-field work, which is also productive. I just think Lynell Hamilton may be able to fill in quite well.

I think you're going to see a healthy does of singleback
Which means, much to the dismay of many, a lot more Reggie Bush. I expect Bush and Thomas to get the most touches this week. When they try some lead block plays, expect Bell in there.
Just my opinion.
