Not a repeat of the Bobby Hebert team
Saints best in NFL so far
New Orleans Saints have got off to their best start since 1991. Their remarkable comeback last Sunday against the Miami Dolphins was perhaps the seasons tell tailing moment. Drew Brees shows remarkable composure behind big early in a game. This feat will surely come to be important when they get into a playoff game. It is all but assured that they will be a playoff team. This team will now keep playing for an undefeated season, or at least a very strong 14-2 home field advantage team. I can't see how this team will not be one of the two NFC teams that will not have to play the first week of the playoffs. They will be home watching their semifinal conference opponent have to win in order to travel to New Orleans.
There are those critics who will compare this Saints team to the one that started of 7-0 in the early nineties. That team struggled at the end and finished 11-5 and bowed out early in the playoffs. Bobby Hebert was their quarterback and drew Brees is way better than that guy. There is no comparison and the team in 1991 didn't have Reggie Bush or a strong running back. This team is just plain dominant and it is finally their turn for the spotlight. When they lost to the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship back in 05, I fully expected the Saints to come back the following season with vengeance and do what they are doing now. I was surprised and disappointed in their performance in 2006. I knew this team was on the verge and was mystified how they regressed. It took a few more years with much of the same cast intact, but the saints are finally showing the Super Bowl caliber team they have had for a while. This is the year they return to the NFC title game and a chance for their super bowl appearance

Off topic but....
Saints are going to wear their black pants on monday night…..first time this season. Anyone else freaked out by this? Not saying im superstitious or anything but we won when we were sporting the gold…why go to black?

I’m not worried about the color of the pants affecting their performance, but I do think they look like ballerina tights and should be permanently discontinued for that reason.

Dalton Hilliard and Craig Heyward weren’t strong running backs? You mentioned that they didn’t have Reggie Bush, as if that was a bad thing. The defense back then was arguably twice as dominant as the one today. In their 7-0 start, they only gave up more than 10 points in a game once. Our current defense has given up more than 20 three times. Granted, we didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard ourselves back then and I wholeheartedly agree, Brees is a much better NFL QB than Hebert (the primary reason for that disparity). But to say the two teams aren’t even comparable on the whole is just downright silly, imo. Different strengths and weaknesses, obviously. Make no mistake about this, you’re talking about a 1991 team that won 11 games and the NFC West … a division that featured two other 10 win teams (San Francisco and Atlanta) and several future HOFers. The 2009 Saints certainly have the POTENTIAL to be that good — perhaps even better — but as of today, they’re no further along than the 1991 team was six games in.

I swear you troll around seeking any mention of Reggie Bush that you can jump on.

These Saints don't compare for many reasons.
Not only because of the differences in the Saints personnel, but changes on all of the other teams as well. These things tend to run in cycles, and while the current Saints are performing well, other teams that were dominating back then may be struggling now. I’m sure you’ve seen the stories questioning whether parity is dead. Not only are there 3 unbeaten teams, there are a large number with 0 or only 1 win. It all combines and plays a role. Saints will pluck the Flacons on Monday night!

14-2 ?????????????
I keep seeing this everywhere on this site. So tell me, Who are the two that will beat the Saints at this point??? Brees is going for a 16-0 season. I’d rather see a 18-0 season and then do it again next year. I don’t want much for Christmas Huh?

If I had to pick two, I’d say Atlanta once and New England. Any team on the schedule could conceivably beat them, though. a.) Brees has a crappy day, b.) they can’t establish the running game whatsoever, c.) the defense doesn’t come out ahead on turnovers. If any two of those happen to occur in the same game, I’d say it’s almost a given.

Agreed
You have to account for the “Any given Sunday rule.”
The winless packers hit us up for something like 52 points a few seasons ago.

I don't see it happening
but I could be wrong. I really feel that Brees has the team on a mindset that they could run the table with a strong effort, I am starting to be conserned about injuried though.

I think Atlanta will get them this monday night
I didn’t like how their defense allowed so many points to Miami. Ryan will possibly light them up as he is a young fellow and wants to look good on national monday night football
grammer geeks you make me sick

Wrong.........................................
Miami only had one good run (669 yaeds by Ricky) and the rest of the time they only allowed 29 yards to the wildcat.

Yeah, that’s a pretty good run.

1991 Saints were
a " Dink and Dunk " offense, yeah a fly pattern here,or mmmmaybe a flea/flicker there, nothing compared to todays play calling and Brees abilities, and who didn’t like Bobby. The black pants—Meh,it is Halloween wkd. Saints all black is better than other teams one color scheme, have you even seen “Battle Red” Texans?

They weren't dink and dunk
They were just more west coast-ish. When you have Eric Martin running slant patterns, you throw him the ball!
Had the Saints had better run blocking, Hilliard would’ve done far FAR more.

Apples and Oranges
the slant route is an under-neath route, and everybody uses them, compare it the # of receptions 20+yds since Brees has been at the helm. That was my point. And Dalton was my fav. Saints RB, in many of my comments I’ve compared PT as the taller leaner version of DH just as hard to tackle. That under-neath stuff became preditable in the Eagles/Saints play-off game we were up 20-6 and the Eagles jammed receivers and clogged passing lanes, tipped a pass and we lost the game, Drew uses play-action to throw it over the top. Happy Halloween Who-Dats…

Dalton
Was a slasher with some pop. Pierre Thomas WISHES he could cut as hard as Dalton could. His cuts were comparable to Barry Sanders only he wasn’t as quick or balanced as Barry.
Had Dalton had a better line, he’d have seen a few probowls and would’ve warranted “best running back ever to play for the Saints” consideration.
In the end he was a bit too small and couldn’t take the pounding for too long.
