Darren Sharper

Did we see this coming?

Star-divide

Before the acquisition of Darren Sharper, the fans of CSC seemed split on whether to get him or not. The argument, for most, was that Sharper was a shell of his former self. They said that he was old. They said that he had lost his playmaking ability. Most said that he was an improvement over our prior FS, but to what degree was the argument. I thought that he would be a vast improvement while others disagreed with me saying he would only be a slight upgrade. We all were wrong! I don't think that anyone, even the ones who wanted Sharper and thought that he'd do well here, would have believed that with only 4 games played, Sharper would lead the league in interceptions and lead the Saints to be #1 in interceptions, #1 in total turnovers, and #2 in turnover ratio with us being +7 after this game. Also, he has the two longest defensive TDs of the year so far with a 97 and 99 yard interception returns. Some credit has to be given to Williams but alot of it has to be given to Sharper. He was exactly what we needed, a playmaker in the secondary. He, in my opinion, has been a HUGE impact to this team so far and should continue this. Also, he is two pick 6s from being tied for #1 in nfl history for most interceptions returned for TDs. Plus, I haven't seen him miss a tackle yet. He is phenomenal.

It seems to me...

that some positions lend themselves to being okay if the player is a little older than other positions. Obviously, the player has to be a superior athlete to play into his mid to late thirties, but I think Safeties, QBs,OL, TEs, Kickers, and sometimes DLs get away with it, certainly longer than RBs, CBs and most WRs. Some LBs also can pull it off, but often nagging or repetitive injuries can be a big factor. I guess SS usually last longer than FS, but Sharper still has the speed to play the position.

After yesterday's game

I realized that Sharper especially takes advantage of inexperienced QBs – 2 INTs off Stafford, 1 off Kolb, and 2 off Sanchez. So my next thought was, are there any other inexperienced QBs he’ll get to rob later this year? Chad Henne is now the starter at Miami, with all of 1 start under his belt. Josh Johnson is currently starting for Tampa Bay, and the way their season is going, it could be Josh Freeman by the time the Saints play them. So, that’s three very good chances. Besides those, he’ll also get a shot at some other mistake prone QBs. Jake Delhomme (who seems determined to set the single season record for INTs), Jason Campbell (though he looks much better this year), and late season Tony Romo present 4 more good opportunities for Sharper.

Sharper is not just having a Pro Bowl year, he is having a HoF year. He is only the second player in history to have returned an INT over 90 yards for a TD twice in the same season. The other is Deion Sanders. And it’s only week 4! Check out some of the single season and career records for INTs he could break this year, namely, return yards season and career, # INTs season, # TDs career and season. If he is with the Saints for another year or two after this, he might even have a shot at breaking Paul Krause’s record of 81 career INTs, a record most pundits thought was unbreakable because of the different rules in place now that favor the offense.

And that brings up another question. Does anyone know if he is signed for more than one year? I had assumed his contract was just one year, but his page on newolearnssaints.com doesn’t mention it, and I couldn’t find any contract details anywhere else. Assuming for the moment that it is a one year deal, do the CSC faithful think we should resign him for 1 or 2 more years after this season?

yes

sign him to 2 more years and draft Taylor Mays from USC so that Sharper can teach him to be as good as he is.

Or he could just keep teaching Usama Young, take over at DC when GW gets his next HC gig, and the Saints could draft a lineman (O or D) or a linebacker or yet another corner. Works for me.

LT, please.

I don’t even mind trading up to get an elite one, if need be. And I’m almost never in favor of trading up for anyone.

trade up for a good

RT, another DT to go with Ellis, maybe a linebacker(i’ve been impressed by Shanle so far this season for the most part) and possibly Mays. Sharper won’t be here forever unfortunately(unless he turns into Favre)

Why RT?

Stinchcomb’s locked up. The rest I’d be ok to stand pat and draft, though I seriously doubt Mays will fall to us, barring injury.

i don't think Stinchcomb's a lock

but i see the point behind a LT and not a RT now. LTs protect the blindside of the QB making them more important. If we keep playing like we are now, we won’t need a new O-line since they all seem to be getting it done right now.

LT is the ONLY

offensive line position you trade up for. Every other position on the O line you can find in the 2nd round or later. If we were to trade up for anything it would have to be LT or a good athletic OLB. Fujita and Shanle are solid but not "playmaking’ or “game changing” LB’s. (I know Shanle has a couple picks this year blah, blah, blah.) But if we had an OLB that could bring some pressure on the edge AND is good dropping back in coverage, we would have offenses on their heels constantly.

I can't believe

we are already talking about the draft! We are 4-0 not 0-4! LOL

Success

didn’t stop the 18-1 Patriots from landing the Defensive Rookie of the Year last season. I don’t think there’s ever a time when you shouldn’t be considering ways to improve your team.

Well it did help that they had previously traded with a team stupid enough to think they were only a player or two away who then gave them the #7 overall instead.

by FriarBob on Oct 7, 2009 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I definitely agree

you should always be looking to improve your team but lets look at improving what we CAN NOW. It’s all nice and good to look forward but there is no way to be able to tell who or where we will be drafting. We don’t know who all is entering the draft, who will be injured, who just has a bad year, dropping their draft status. Who is going to be our “Lead Pot Smoker” for the year running their 40 while smoking a joint. There is just too much football left to be played, professional and collegiate, to worry about who we might be, maybe, possibly could be, but probably won’t draft.
