How they see us

So...now that the Saints are 4-0, and the mighty, mighty Jets have been defeated and humbled, how does New York view the game?

Check out this from the New York Daily News, Gary Myers up:

Mark Sanchez finally played like a confused and disoriented rookie and is the only reason why the Jets can now forget about becoming the first team to go 16-0 and win the Super Bowl.

Admittedly, Sanchez played badly. But the Saints' defense played brilliantly. Did Sanchez lose...or did the Saints win? The answer from New York seems to be: were the Saints there? We hadn't noticed...

Star-divide

Or how about this reader response to the article:

The Saints are a very good team and might go all the way in the weak NFC.

The "weak" NFC. Why weak? Because there are only three undefeated teams (one of them being from...New York), as opposed to the two in the AFC? Or because one of them is the Saints?

Are those just isolated incidents? Well, NBC's local affiliate had this to say:

[Sanchez] had an awful day and the Jets very likely would have beaten the Saints if he'd just had a mediocre one.

Yeah, that Saints offense didn't stand a chance against the powerhouse Jets. Playing only hard enough, they managed to tie them 10-10. If they'd played a little harder, God only knows how many fewer points they'd have scored.

But just when you think finding any sanity in New York may be a lost cause, in steps Walt Bennett, "a longtime Jets fan and one of our Pro Bowl commenters" for the New York Times:

Other than the fact that the Saints got very little downfield, this game proceeded basically as I expected it to. I actually nodded knowingly when Sharper stepped in front of that Sanchez pass, as though the moment I had been waiting for had come. It did not surprise me that Sanchez struggled, facing by far the most adversity he has yet faced as a pro.

The offensive line was a large contributor to Sanchez’s woes, and I’m not going out on much of a limb with that observation. The Saints seemed to have zero trouble pressuring Sanchez, who is not yet at a level where he knows where to go with the ball on a hot read. He still has to process that decision, and that extra half second is more than this offensive line can provide. There were times when Sanchez would have bought extra time simply by stepping up, and he’ll learn that. So today was a day in the classroom for the youngster.

The defense played bend but don’t break and wait for a mistake, and that seemed to be a good strategy until the Saints shoved the ball down their throats in the fourth quarter to seal the game. Rex admitted as much, when he was asked how he felt about his defense holding the Saints to only 10 points: "I thought it should have been 3 points. I was very disappointed that they were able to drive the ball down the field on us in that spot."

And rightly so. This was a game where the defense had to provide opportunities for the offense, and that happened only once, and only after the hole had been dug.

In other words: the Jets came swaggering into New Orleans and got manhandled. The Saints' defense dictated the terms of the game, and the Saints' offense throttled back and idled for most of four quarters...until they needed to score. Then they scored. End of game.

That's life in the weak NFC. Welcome to the Dome, New Yorkers. Come back in two weeks and try again.

New York 3 Peat

How bizarre is this schedule that we play 3 New York Teams in the course of a month…
Should we get shirts made after we beat the giants and agian show the NFL the Saints are for real

Bills Check
Jets Check
Giants Come Get Some

I know they say "New York"

but aren’t the Jets more of a New Jersey team? Anyway, that is kinda bizarre. Maybe after the 3rd game, the NY media will start respecting the Saints.

The last writer was right. Sure, the Saints offense had some trouble (especially on 4th downs; something I hope we’ll work on in the bye week) but a good part of that is that we were playing conservative and run the clock from the start of the 3rd quarter.

I'm proud of my damn strong football team. Have a great day!

The Jets AND the Giants

are NJ teams. The NY is just there to get all the money that comes with being a “NY” team. They both play in the same stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, across the parking lot from where the NJ Nets play and the NJ Devils used to play. Buffalo is the only “NY” NFL team.

Buffalo: A New York Team

Buffalo may be a (the only) New York Team right now but their owner is doing everything he can to become a Canadian Team. They are playing a couple of their home games across the border in Toronto and if I remember correctly, the Bills owner wants to play all of them there unless he gets a new stadium in Buffalo.

Since Buffalo probably can’t afford a new stadium (who can in this economy?), it won’t surprise me if, sometime in the next couple of years, the Buffalo Bills end up playing ALL their home games in Canada.

They play 1 reg season game a year for 5 years,

Not sure its working however. The stadium is too small so to cover that they charged WAY to much last year. The cheapest seats were priced where premium seats are normally priced in some stadiums.

The man driving this to all happen here was Ted Rogers and sadly he died last year. Not sure if his company will be as determined to push for this.

As a Toronto resident, I am 50 / 50 on whether or not they would ever come here.

i totally agree

that the storyline is “sanchez plays poorly” rather than “saints play well,” since our defense isn’t an exciting/good story—the script for coverage about us by non-local media is 1) Drew Brees is the best, 2) Reggie Bush is a bust, and that’s actually about it (except for don banks’ column that i posted in the fanshots—kudos for him to giving us our props)
.

but here’s what i think is so bizarre— the way jets fans are having to justify to themselves “oh well we didn’t really think we were going 16-0 anyway,” or, “let’s work on going 15-1.” seriously? are people that naive about the realities of the NFL? Look we knew it was going to be tough going against that defense, and yet we found a way to win. let them blame themselves if that somehow makes them feel better—saints fans see how our D is energized in a completely new way.

…and i like how sanchez being a “rookie QB” was only pejorative after this game. he wasn’t a confused rookie when he beat THE UNSTOPPABLE PATRIOTS and was brilliant for the first 3 games, was he?

Well done, M-E. You showed real restraint. Here’s the point that I think is widely overlooked:

the Saints’ offense throttled back and idled for most of four quarters…until they needed to score. Then they scored. End of game.

With a 14 point lead, you don’t call the same plays as you would if if was a much closer game. No need to go long to Devery or Meachem and risk a pick, that would be greedy and foolish. The problem is, SOME people think you’re being contained and you CAN’T go long. Hmmph. CBS-New York took some hits in the game thread, big time. And by the way, why are homers Gumbel and Dierdorf assigned to cover the NEW YORK Jets 4 games in a row? It turns a national broadcast into an irksome local (New York) one. Oh that’s right, Peter King said 99% of all TV sets are plugged in within the Tri-state area.

We did go long to Meachem and Henderson, and they were contained. The Jets secondary played excellent man coverage, all game long. Luckily, we have a balanced team now, and not every team has the Jets’ DB’s. The Saints were probably taking less shots downfield than they might have, if they had needed points, but they still weren’t clicking like usual in the passing game. I’m not really complaining, I’m just saying, against the Bills, I could say it was a good Tampa-2 defense in the bad weather. This week, it was a lot of man-to-man in the dome. The Jets left a lot more coverage out than I would have expected, but Brees still found some single coverage receivers out there, and they just failed to connect. We have some awful competition coming up this season, and I expect the passing game to look as shiny as ever against the Rams and Bucs and Skins, but after this week’s game, I’m not looking at the “middle-of-the-road” defense and respectable running game as a fallback, or “just enough” to prop up our stellar passing attack. It’s looking like we’re gonna need great defense and hard running to stay in the tougher games. The cool part is, we have those things now. It’s unbelievable. The Saints looks like the teams that usually go the distance. But I’m starting to think the new plan isn’t going to include a lot of 300 yard, 3td passing days. It’s very hard right now to wrap my mind around the idea that great passing is now the fallback plan, instead of the only thing that’s right. Still a lot of football left, so who knows? Not me, for sure.

Meachem

was not contained on the long pass play to him that i saw. Brees has just flat out been average the past couple weeks. He has not made the throws that he has needed to make for the TDs the past 2 games. Meachem was open and if Brees throws it more to the left or possibly just more deep and up the middle, Meachem is gone. Bad pass, not contained. Now, the Jets did do a great job of containing our passing game. The did alot of man to man with safety help over the top. I do agree about the score dictating how we play the game.

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

by skinnykinney on Oct 5, 2009 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That long pass to Meachem . . .

WAS THERE! Meach didn’t fully extend for that ball. It couldn’t have been more perfect. Dead run, over coverage, lack of extension and off the fingertips. If he would’ve fully extended, it would have been an easy six. That was a ball that should have been caught, or at the very least, he should’ve gotten his hand on. A professional wide receiver needs to take advantage of those opportunities.

disrespect? - soak it in

I love it! Who would’ve thought that we’d be 4-0 and still be overlooked? All the better. Listening to Dierdorf was excruciating (as it usually is) because every comment seemed to come around to the Jets and what they were doing or not doing. I love the whole “if only 1/2 of the game hadn’t happened, we would’ve won” attitude. If only Bush hadn’t fumbled, it is a walk…. If only only our offense doesn’t make a lot of small errors, we win by 28. If, if, if…

Dierdork is a @#$%

It seemed to me like I had turned off the tv’s sound and turned up the Jet’s radio play-by-play guys. Thank god that was our only CBS game. Our only other home game vs and AFC team is the Monday night game vs the Pats.

If Atlanta is still in the running by the time we head to ATL, I wouldn’t be suprised if the moved that game to the night game.

Saints defense

Funny how our defensive greatness was never mentioned by the announcers who touted the Jets’ D the whole game, even though ours was performing 10x better. The announcers acted like the Jets were poised to come back and win it the whole time.

The only reason Sanchez played so bad was because we were kicking his * the whole time. Go Saints! Thanks for bringing our D back Mr. Williams!!!

my favorite

was when it was 17-3 and homer Dierdorf goes “they score on this drive and they’re right back in it.” he was this close _ to screaming J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS when they scored in the third quarter.

In this one, and with Aikman in Philly,

The best part of the commenting was in the fourth quarters, when Aikman and Dierdorf sound dejected and disinterested. You got the feeling listening to both of them that they would have rather get a head start out to the parking lot than have to spend time discussing the Saints’ solid play. The other three quarters, it drives me nuts having to listen to how great the opponent(who has yet to hold a lead ONCE) is, and how it’s all about to turn, but, as long as we’re winning, it all pays off in the fourth, when they realize that it’s NOT about to happen, that it won’t happen, that…The Saints…have handled…the “superior” team.

I refuse to get overly excited

about the improved play of the secondary, considering the experience of the QBs we’ve faced thusfar. The four have had 28 prior NFL starts combined and 25 of those belonged to Trent Edwards. One solid game against a mediocre veteran signal caller does not a championship caliber defense make. That being said, they’re playing with MUCH better balance on offense, something that would behoove even the weakest of defensive units in a league stir fried in parity. Time of possession. Limiting the opponents’ opportunities to score, be it via turnovers or a game of keepaway. THAT’S what winning football is all about. Right now, I’m not worried about undefeated seasons, playoff berths or any of that way-down-the-road type stuff. Right now, I’m just glad that the Xbox Kid has seemingly finally gotten the picture.

the good news is

our d is handling inexperienced qb’s the way theyre supposed to. last year we had clown qbs like sage rosenfels throwing the ball around like joe montana. what else can we ask for from them.

were are definitely getting better running the ball, kicking the ball, and playing d. if we took the team we had the last two years and played the same four teams we just played, i guarantee we would be 2-2 right now.

Agreed. I also like the fact that the rest of our schedule isn’t exactly teaming with opposing QB talent:

Eli Manning – inconsistent at times, though above average when on.
Chad Henne – inexperienced.
Matt Ryan – slightly above average.
Jake Delhomme – wildly inconsistent.
Marc Bulger/Kyle Boller – an injury waiting to re-occur/inconsistent.
Josh Johnson – inexperienced.
Tom Brady – among the best.
Jason Campbell – run of the mill.
Tony Romo – see Eli Manning.

That’s not exactly a Who’s Who list of players that are going to beat you on any given week.

not to sound like a complete homer, but...

Eli Manning has been far and away the best quarterback on that list this season. He’s got a better qb rating (104.1 vs 83.7, not that I really put much stock in qb rating) a better passing % and twice as many tds (8 vs 4) with 49 less attempts. Not to mention the fact that he plays on a clearly better team (again, right now) than any of those other QB’s. I wouldnt sleep on Eli just because people have this preconcieved notion that he isnt that good. As of this moment, he’s a top 3 qb (with his bro and Brees).

by daveh873 on Oct 5, 2009 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I gotta lotta respect for Eli.

It’s obvious the G-men do, too. Nice contract, huh? Eli has been lucky that he hasn’t had to carry the team like some others. Nor has he had superstar receivers like some others. Unlucky that he will always be compared to his big brother. If you watched the Colts game this weekend, taking nothing away from Peyton, but man his receivers made some pretty fantastic catches. Makes him look even better.

He has a mild case of plantar fasciitis

I wouldnt plan on not seeing him in 2 weeks, or on him not being at or near 100%

“Team physician Russell Warren told Manning he could play this weekend against the Oakland Raiders if he could tolerate the pain. “It’s not as serious an injury as (the doctor) has seen before, where it’s the whole foot that’s hurting,” Manning said in an interview on ESPN Radio in New York. “It’s just kind of a portion of it.”

by daveh873 on Oct 6, 2009 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And on the CBS postgame show

I heard Shannon Sharpe, off-camera, (as they were showing the highlight of Eli when he hurt his foot and discussing that he hurt it dropping back to pass) say something like “Yeah, Eli hurt his foot kicking ______ in the butt all day long.” (alluding to the fact that the Giants were beating up on their opponent) HILARIOUS

NYSaint finds respect in NYC

although its shocking that ANYONE could down play the saints after a strong 4-0 start, its not as one sided as you southerners are making it seem. The FAN, sports radio 660 AM was talking up the Saints all week leading up to the game AND giving them praise this morning. dumb NY callers were going on and on about how their “San’chise” finally looked like a rookie QB, but the DJ’s kept saying “give all the credit to the NY Saints DEF”

same thing on ESPN NY radio this morning. Mike & Mike had chris carter on and he too gave the credit to the saints D. paraphrasing: good defenses make QBs struggle at times, but when the ravens force payton manning to throw 3 INTs in a game, no one says he played to his true caliber. they say the DEF had a good day and the QB had a bad day.

sorry to say it, but the saints are not flying under anyones radar. they are commonly referred to, by the NY & national media, as a Super Bowl caliber team…a high powered /best offense in the league (even being compared to the “Greatest Show on Turf”)….and even a really good defense.

much respect for beating the jets…true test…beat the giants (possible NFC championship preview?)

Honestly, the Saints are getting alot of love today around here (north Jersey right outside NYC) and alot of people (the ones I actually will listen to and know what they are talking about) arent saying “the Jets lost the game” but that the Saints were the superior team. There’s no disrespect coming from the competent minds up here. Great win yesterday. I’m more pumped for this Giants-Saints game than i’ve been for any regular season game for quite some time (a large part of that is because my gf is from N.O. and a big time Saints fan, but still). I’ll say, it pisses me off when I can hear the commentators during games, as it seems even the best color guys are rooting for somebody(maybe not Madden, or Collinsworth), and, against the Saints, it always seems to be the opponent who’s brilliant and about to steal the show. I don’t really blame them for that(extremely small market, perennial underachievers, etc.), but it still pisses me off to hear it.

The other six days and 21 hours of the week, I’d love nothing more than to be overlooked winners by the msm. Berman and Eisen can do nothing to help the Saints win games, and I don’t care if they noticed my team or not. I’m entertained by sports media, and I love a good Saints highlight reel, but I want it to always be a surprise that the Saints could beat somebody, and I like it when the other team’s “homers” are the ones who have to figure out the excuses every week. As a Saints fan, their misery and awkward explanations bring me great joy, having experienced so much of that firsthand.

No they are NY teams. They were both based in NY and only moved across the river. The fan base is NY, Long Island Upstate NY and Connecticut in addition to New Jersey and parts of Penn. It’s silly to say that only people in NJ root for them.

i don’t think he’s saying only people in NJ root for them. saying that their stadium is located in jersey and buffalo is the only team that actually plays home games in the state of new york

If we hadnt let them score 14 on turnovers we would have won.

Lets say we didnt get 14 off turnvers, then we have to say they didnt get 7 off of ours..

Not all that surprising

As a New Orleanean who has lived in NYC since Katrina, I am not all that surprised that the general FAN attitude here is that “Jets Lost” rather than “Saints Won”. The Jets have been as long suffering as the Saints have been (it’s been a long time since Broadway Joe) and their fans are every bit as dedicated to their team. I watch the Saints each week on a side TV in my local Pub; a Jets Bar where I have been welcomed for my 4th Season. On Sunday I had the big TV with sound, surrounded by their faithful. My brews were specially poured in a Jets’ branded glass ( I good naturedly ignored it for 2 Quarters) and I drew a few glares when I shouted on Sharp’s Pick to the House and Grant’s forced fumble in the end zone and cheered on PT Cruiser and Reggie.

The Jets fans have the additional scourge of dealing with Giants’ fans who have been far more successful through the years. And face it, they play their home games in New Jersey which is enough to give anyone a complex.

I’m not so sure that had the tables been turned, we wouldn’t have been a bit the same way. How often have we talked about the close games that we “lost” last year?

BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT WE ARE 4-0 AND THEY’RE NOT.

Anyway just like the coaches have no doubt already told the team; It’s Monday and what’s past is past. The Giants game is now the focus. They are tough on both sides of the ball and it’s a must win.

by 911willie on Oct 5, 2009 12:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

good point, willie

I bet close analysis of our media following games might also find a similar focus on what our team did to win/lose rather than what the other team did to win/lose.

I think it all goes back to what M-E always points out – everyone has a bias, no exceptions.

Absolutely

Had we lost the game, we’d be talking about Bush’s fumble, our inability to control the clock, leaving points on the field by going for it on 4th down, etc. It sure as hell wouldn’t be all about the Jets’ amazing goal line defense, the heads-up strip of Bush, the poise of Sanchez in overcoming the noise of a sellout crowd, etc. Unless you’re going out of your way to be objective, everything is going to be spun towards the team you more closely follow. It’s human nature.

agreed

if it would’ve been Brees’ throwing the picks, it would’ve been Brees making mistakes instead of their defense doing such a good job on him(which they did but at sacrifice to stopping the run consistently).

Hopefully, and seemingly, they’re both professionals and grown-ass men, and stuff like that doesn’t factor into their lives much. I think Payton is definitely a cocky little SOB, but both he and Williams are paid to make the team work. He gave GW money out of his own pocket, and hired his son, to secure him, I should think GW knows he’s got Payton’s respect. That said, I don’t doubt that Payton wants it to be Sean F-ing Payton’s coaching brilliance that takes them to the promised land.

yea thats my biggest concern great defensive coaches dont usually stick around long before someone makes them a head coach there are alot of teams that will need new coaches at the end of this year

I can’t stand that guy. Aikman was a little one-sided in the Philly game, but Dierdorf makes Jim Henderson sound like Bob Costas. Also, seeing his face makes me wanna throw up in my hat.

Someone has the Saints' back

I didn’t mention it before, but Gruden was here in Iraq visiting just before the start of the season. Someone asked him who he liked to go to the Superbowl and he said, “Watch out for the Saints.”

Later I actually met him and shook his hand (As hard as it was to shake hands with a Buc!), and when he heard I was a Saints fan, he was very quick to point out that Payton and Williams were going to shock the league this year. He seemed pretty adamant about the Saints going all the way.

At least that’s one person, and having been there himself, gotta love what that says. That, and it was kind of funny to have him say that in front of Fisher, Coughlin, and Harbaugh.

The people who say, "Winning isn't everything," don't win very often.

Yeah

Gruden is a big lover of the Saints. Was watching some NFL Films thing last night and he said Sean Payton was the best play caller in the league.

I’m in Baghdad right now. The good news is that last time I was here, the Saints went to the Championship game.

It’s pretty good, when they’re winning like this, they televise a lot of the games on AFN. I’ve seen all but 1.

Dallas and Ed Werder

see the Saints as a passing fad that won’t make a splash even if we make the playoffs. Right now I’m also not really convinced. It seems like we make too many mistakes and still can’t really secure games early. I would feel better if we could get a lead, keep the lead, and just keep rolling. I am happy that we won despite getting stuffed on 4th and 1 a couple times. This could be the year but we have a LOT of room for improvement.

by xen-cuts on Oct 7, 2009 6:27 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

S'ok...

…I see Dall@$$ as a sub .500 ballclub:

Dall@$$ is 2-2, here’s the records of the teams they beat:

Tampa Bay 0-4
Carolina 0-3

Here’s who they lost to:

NY Giants 4-0
Denver 4-0

So, when they play anyone that can actually PLAY FOOTBALL, they lose. When they play a patsy, they win – and by the way, the win against Carolina was more like a loss because of a really bad play by Steve “LOOK AT ME, IT’S ALL ABOUT ME!!!” Smith than anything else.

They’ll probably move to 3-2 this coming weekend, they’re playing another 0-4 team, and they really have a handle on beating bad football teams in Big D. Just can’t seem to win against actual NFL teams.

As for Ed Werder….who the F*** cares what Mr. Weirder has to say….he’s apparently got his head so far up Jerry Jones’ tailpipe, he can only see three colors: Silver, Blue, and BROWN.

Irony: An atheist Saints fan.

I don’t get what your problem is on this. We haven’t trailed yet this season. The two times we were tied, we took the lead back in the ensuing drive. 35-3 in the first half would be nice, but 10-3 is not bad.

Room for improvement, definitely, but this year has been a dream come true for me in getting and maintaining a lead.

ELI ?

I have to not agree. Every time I watch him all I see is confussion and turn overs. I think he is the most over rated QB in the NFL. He shaows me nottin honey. He is on a team that wins in spite of his dumbness. I hope he plays his average game against us , we will have 6 turn overs from him alone (lol). He is just like (Delhome) with the Panthers.
He is light years from his older brother. Right now I think Payton is the best # 2 I think
Brees and after that seems like most are all about the same. I think Farve is a old man that seems to be luck a lot (?). Remember now next year he will probably come back and play against the Vikes @ Pack and do it on the Detroit team !! We can all see and say that he is NOT a team guy at all. It’s all about him and more records and tv coverage..Many QB"s could have better records then him but they retired with some class and style. Montana-Tarkenton-Bradshaw-Gabriel-Griese-Steve Young-Meredith-

and on -on-on. Romo ? How does he keep his starting job ? Mc Nabb , has he ever played a complete season ?

Eli's thrown 2 picks this year

one of which bounced off his receivers hands to a defender. He’s got the 2nd highest passer rating in the league, and he’s currently quarterbacking a 5-0 team that has dismantled three straight admittedly terrible teams. He’s doing this with wide receivers that nobody but Giants fans had ever heard of before the season. Oh, and he’s a Super Bowl MVP.

But you’re right about one thing – I also remember seeing a hell of a lot of confusion from the Patriots after this play

"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09
