Are the New Orleans Saints for Real?
Hello Saints fans! Here is a Story that I posted at my site, called Checking the Numbers. It's a statistical comparison of the Saints' 2008 per game numbers versus 2009 numbers. I emailed Saintsational to see if he was interested in it, and he said he'd like it posted as a FanPost, so, here it is. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks!

Last season, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees nearly broke Dan Marino's single season passing yards record. He fell just a few yards short of breaking the record on the final play of the final game of the 2008 season. While Brees had a great season individually, the Saints as a team were the definition of average, finishing with an 8-8 record. So far in 2009, they are one of the last remaining undefeated teams in the NFL. So, the question is, are they for real, or are they either just on a hot streak or playing cupcakes?

In this post, I will compare the Saints' per game statistics from 2008 with those of the first quarter of 2009. For each season, I will also compare their league rankings in offensive and defensive points, total yards, passing yards, and rushing yards. Then, I will do the same for their average opponents' rankings. This should give some indication as to the level of competition from last year to this. Finally, I will also show the average opponents' rankings for their remaining opponents this year to see if their schedule will get harder than it has been so far.
First, let's compare the Saints' per game numbers of 2008 with those of the first four games in 2009.
| New Orleans Saints Year to Year Comparison | |||
| 2008 | 2009 | Yr/Yr Imp | |

| Pass INT/G | 0.94 | 2.5 | 1.56 |
| Pass NY/A | 6.4 | 5.2 | -1.2 |
| Sacks/G | 1.75 | 2.5 | 0.75 |
| Rush Att/G | 24.88 | 33.5 | 8.63 |
| Rush Yards/G | 117.81 | 83.25 | -34.56 |
| Rush TD/G | 0.88 | 0.75 | -0.13 |
| Y/A | 4.2 | 3.7 | -0.5 |
| TO/G | 1.38 | 3.25 | 1.88 |
The main reasons that the Saints were not serious contenders for a playoff spot in 2008 were their defense and running game. With the exception of their rush defense rank (17), their defense and rushing offense all ranked in the bottom third of the league last year, which we will see below. As we can see from the above table, though, New Orleans's offense and defense are putting up better numbers in just about every way. While Brees is averaging about 63 fewer yards per game passing, the offense is more balanced, averaging nearly 67 more rushing yards per game. The improved balance has led to fewer interceptions (0.63 fewer/game) and more points, just over a TD more per game.

AP Photo/Bill Feig
The defense is also putting up better numbers. They are allowing over 8 fewer points per game so far in 2009, over 44 fewer yards per game (about 10 fewer passing and 34 fewer rushing yards), and fewer TDs on both the ground and in the air. They are also forcing more TOs: 1.56 more interceptions per game and 1.88 more total TOs. The biggest part of this is due to the early success of Darren Sharper, which I mentioned in my Around the NFL in Week 4 post. Not only is he leading the league in interceptions, with 5, he returned two of them for TDs, to get within two of Rod Woodson, the all time leader in INTs for TDs. Having discussed their per game numbers, let's compare their rankings from 2008 against 2009 so far.
| New Orleans Saints' Rankings | ||
| 2008 | 2009 | |
| Off Pts | 1 | 1 |
| Off Yds | 1 | 2 |
| Off Pass Yds | 1 | 10 |
| Off Rush Yds | 28 | 2 |
| Def Pts | 26 | 7 |
| Def Yds | 23 | 9 |
| Def Pass Yds | 23 | 13 |
| Def Rush Yds | 17 | 8 |
Based on these numbers, the Saints are clearly playing more balanced football with a higher performing offense and defense than in 2008. Their offensive passing rank is lower than last year, but that is more than made up for by the improved running game. The question now is: Are they doing that against the same level of competition as last year?
The table below contains the Average Opponents' Rankings for the Saints' opponents in 2008, so far in 2009, and remaining in 2009. I decided to include the "remaining in 2009" rankings because I was curious to see what their remaining level of competition looked like.
| Average Opponents' Rankings | |||
| 2008 | 2009 Q1 | 2009 Rem | |
| Off Pts | 15.88 | 16.5 | 21.83 |
| Off Yds | 15.56 | 19.25 | 19.33 |
| Off Pass Yds | 16.5 | 17 | 15.5 |
| Off Rush Yds | 13.06 | 18.75 | 9.33 |
| Def Pts | 17.25 | 21.5 | 16.5 |
| Def Yds | 19.38 | 13.75 | 20.25 |
| Def Pass Yds | 18.19 | 18 | 13.08 |
| Def Rush Yds | 19.5 | 16.25 | 17.58 |
First, let's just look at the numbers for 2008 and 2009 Q1. The opponents' average offensive rankings in 2009 Q1 are all close to or less than those of 2008. The biggest difference is in Rush Yards rankings, which drops an average of over 5 spots. The others are pretty close, although Total Yards is also about 3.5 lower than 2008. Some of the difference is probably accounted for the Saints' defensive improvement. New Orleans's defensive rankings improve much more than the difference in opponents' offensive rankings, which suggests legitimate improvement, not just better numbers due to inferior competition. The 2009 opponents' offensive rankings would also be impacted by the fact that the Saints' defense is putting up better numbers.
Now, when looking at the Saints' opponents' average defensive rankings, it does not seem that there is drastic difference in the the rankings from 2008 to 2009 Q1. The biggest changes are higher opponents' rankings in total yards and rushing yards. Since the Saints biggest improvement so far this year is in rushing the ball, this also suggests that the Saints' improvements are legitimate. They're not just playing teams that are seives against the run.
Finally, I wanted to take a look at the current rankings of the teams left on the Saints' schedule. The biggest differences are in opponents' average rushing rank, which is significantly higher (almost 9 spots higher), and the defensive pass yards rank. With the improved running game, the higher opponents' defensive pass rankings shouldn't be an issue. However, it's possible that the Saints' rush defensive rank will suffer, even if the unit is playing better than last year.
Having looked at all of these numbers, I have to conclude at this point that, yes, the Saints are for real. They have the best balance they've probably had in team history. Currently, the rush offense is ranked 2nd in the league, their QB is one of two in NFL history to pass for over 5,000 yards, and their defense is much improved in all aspects. This appears to be a team with few weaknesses at this point, if any. We will see how the rest of the season plays out, but up to this point in the season, there is no legitimate reason to doubt that the Saints are championsip contender.
Thoughts?

Excellent stuff, thanks!
However, I believe you have one factual error: didn’t both Brees and Warner break the 5000 yard mark last season? If so, that means that Brees is one of three to have done so.
I happen to agree with your analysis, but I also happen to be a Saints fan, so I’m a bit biased….I hope WE’RE right!!!

Kurt Warner
You’re crazy GSO. Though Warner was a DISTANT 2nd in the NFL for passing yards he only finished with 4583(still a very respectable number).
Fun Fact: 2005 Tom Brady led the league with 4110 yards. Then the Breesus dynasty started

Still love Breesus

Glad you liked it
Warner was on pace to break 5000 yards last year, but he fell short. Probably, that spanking the Cards took in New England killed his chances. Anyway, here’s a list of the top passing yard seasons.

Thanks for the support
We, as saints fans, are a little biased and it’s nice to see some other people believe we are SB contenders too. Good luck this season! We might have almost the SB from last year excpet for a better defense from the NFC team :D.

Thanks all
And, let me just say this. I didn’t just try to write a fluff piece to make Saints fans feel even better. I do think that the Saints have the kind of balance and overall strengths to be contenders. I wouldn’t have said that at the beginning of the season, because I expected more shootouts with the defense struggling. It really looks like the offseason additions, most notably Sharper, have improved the defense considerably. It will be interesting to see how the run D holds up over the rest of the season, though. I think that with the newfound running game the Saints have, though, that will help take pressure off of Brees, allowing him to be more ready to step up in those games that it’s really needed.

Sharper is
who most people see as our biggest addition(at least among other team’s fans and alot of analysts) but I think alot of Saints fans will tell you that Greg Williams is who is giving this team the biggest boost. He’s made a very big point of attacking offenses and creating TOs. Also it helps when he just let’s Sharper do his thing :D

Williams
Yes, I had forgotten about that, but a new D-Coordinator can make a big difference. Reminds me of when Lovie Smith went to the Rams and helped get them back to the SB. Mike Nolan’s doing some kind of job in Denver this year, too. I think the Titans are seeing the other side of that with Schwartz going to Detroit.

I think these stats paint a picture
It is a pretty accurate depiction of what we have seen this season. The Saints have been playing with a lead pretty much all season. That leads to milking the clock and more rushing plays for us, and more passing plays from the opposing teams trying to get a quick score and play catch up. I think these stats prove the point that this Saints team is built to jump out to an early lead and then effectively hold on to that lead.
by VAsaintsfan on Oct 8, 2009 7:56 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Even more than that
Not only are the Saints running more to milk the clock, but they’re running it more effectively. Over 66 more rushing yards a game and a full yard more per attempt is a huge improvement. And, even if opponents are passing more because they are behind, the defense is still holding them to fewer yards passing than last year. All around, pretty impressive improvements to this point.

Thanks, I appreciate that :)
Yeah, if I was a Saints fan, I’d be waiting for the bottom to fall out. But, I’ve been a Steelers fan all my life, and even coming off a SB win, I’m nervous about the Lions game coming up. But, I do wish the Saints well, and I expect you will keep it going. The only concern may be how they handle the playoffs. But, they handled them well a couple years ago, just losing to the Bears in a freezing night. And, I’m pretty sure that this team is more balanced than that one was.

Re: Yeah, if I was a Saints fan, I’d be waiting for the bottom to fall out.
After all these years, I have to admit this is all a little hard to get used to. I have never ever given up on or abandoned the Saints, but my faith has been tested, shaken and folded, spindled and mutilated more than a few times. I believe. I believe. I believe……

Interesting stats...
While it’s clear the Saints’ D is better than last year, the fact that we were ahead in every one of the four victories throughout the games shows the stats of opponents’ passing, for example, was far higher re yards and completions, because opponents had to pass to try to get back in the game. Kolb of the Eagles, for example, got 175 yards in the 4th quarter, when the game was already lost. While Detroit scored 22 points against the Saints, most of those came against our special teams, when this phase of our game was the weakest and is now one of the strongest. The reason our passing stats fell off in the last two games wasn’t because Brees was off; it was because the Bills and the Jets were determined to let us run and put 5 & 6 pass defenders back. We did what good teams always do; they take what the defense gives them.

our real test will be the giants running game this week if we can beat them and hold their running game to respectable numbers it will be a big boost to our confidence

*Are You Serious?????*
Let me guess. Your game day attire is a pocket protector and a slide ruler? Have you ever attended an actual game and had an actual beer? Have you ever heard the phrase, “On any given Sunday…..”?
Throw your statistics and numbers in the toilet and get out there and enjoy the sport for what it is. If Drew throws five touchdown passes for over 80 yards each I don’t care diddly squat if it’s a new record, a mathmatical impossibility, or a freakin’ miracle. I just scream and jump up and down till I fart! If you can’t do that, then go cheer for Harvard.
Jeeeeez!
