The Unthinkable
Here we are at the halfway point of the season, a perfect 8-0. Who woulda thunk it? It's been a phenomenal run, so far. The offense is clicking in ways we never thought possible. The defense isn't nearly as dominant statistically, but they're forcing turnovers at an alarming rate, thereby not allowing their opponents the opportunity to keep pace.
Eight games in, and the Saints' champagne glass is undoubtedly half full ... or is it? Following the team's win over Atlanta last week, Anthony Hargrove was asked what seven straight victories to start the season meant to him, personally. I must admit, his cautiously optimistic reply took me by surprise: "It means we can't finish 6-10". He then went on to touch upon the importance of it having been a divisional win, etc., ... but it was his initial statement that continued to resonate with me, long after the interview.
Even a game later, as surreal as this all is ... what have we truly accomplished, that fifteen other Saints teams throughout history haven't? Here we stand, atop of the 2009 mountain, gazing out as far as the eye can see. It's been a long, difficult climb and ... just like all hills ... it only gets easier going down, right? Well, maybe. See, if you happen to trip and fall going UP a hill, you're probably not going to tumble very far. Why? Because you're moving at a methodical pace. You're also travelling in the opposite direction of this little thing called gravity. If you're hauling ass down the backside of a hill and stumble ... well, you're a lot more likely to wind up in a heap on the valley floor.
Let's not dance around the subject any longer. It's every Saints fans' ultimate fear, no matter how quickly we choose to label it a non-concern ... the 0-8 collapse. The dreaded Tragedy that chases away our Comedic grin. It's time to tackle the remote possibility head-on. Ready for some hardcore hypothetical soul searching? Let's continue.
If the Saints were to finish this season 8-8 and NOT make the playoffs ...
1.) Would you continue to be a Saints fan?
2.) Would you entertain suicidal thoughts?
3.) Could you handle the ridicule such an epic choke job would inevitably spawn?
4.) Should Sean Payton be fired?
5.) Would you begin to believe in Marie Laveau's curse?
6.) Could you ever again approach a new football season with unbridled optimism?
7.) If you're a season ticket holder, would you renew? If you're not, would you take advantage of the cancellations, in order to get your foot in the door?
8.) Would you attempt to rationalize the 8-0 start, by considering that "maybe we just weren't that good all along"?
9.) What changes (if any) would you want to see made, before investing yourself in the team again?
10.) Which (if any) of your answers to the above questions would depend on the circumstances surrounding the collapse? In other words, would a season-ending injury to Brees in the Rams game (for example), somehow lessen the humiliation in hindsight? And to what extent?
Please take a few minutes to think these 10 questions over, then answer them as candidly as possible. If you'd rather avoid the Debbie Downer role play all together that's fine ... just refrain from posting. I'd rather avoid lectures on the power of positive thinking, incredulous opposition such as "why do you even wanna go there?" etc. You should know me by now. If there's a flipside to anything, I'm going there.

Not nearly as often as someone will superfluously mention the possibility of them going 16-0.

until we lose
somebody (a lot of somebodys actually) will always bring up going undefeated. im not even sure if payton would play his starters in week 17 if we made it to 15-0.
but the negativity in this post is overwhelming. i mean, what if it wasnt that bad? we lost hebert in ’91 and still didnt lose the rest of our games. do you think losing brees for the season makes us 8-8? how do you have any fun watching the saints if this is the stuff going through your head? ive also seen where you posted your confirmation for a room in miami for the superbowl. i dont get it.
all i can do is quote a movie (i know you love those)

I booked a room, because if they happen to make it to the Super Bowl, I plan on being there to support the team. It doesn’t mean I’m numb to the possibility of them losing the remainder of their games. If they did — or even if they won the the next nine and lost in the NFC Championship — I could always cancel the reservation. And no, I don’t think losing Brees guarantees us an 8-8 season. At least, no more than I think not losing him guarantees us a 16-0 season. We’ve won over 8 games with Steve Walsh, Heath Shuler and Danny Wuerffel combined in the past. I think Mark Brunell is a better QB than any of those guys. We’ve also lost 9 is a single season with Brees. Of course, I think our chances of making the playoffs diminish considerably if he were to go down. That doesn’t mean we absolutely CAN’T make it there without him. Hell, 8-8 got them to the playoffs with Walsh. It just depends on what the rest of the NFC does.

Somehow with Saints 8-0 and in Unchartered Territory
for a Saints’ Regular Season, an unnerving number of the FanPosts and comments on CSC lately have gone from interesting and enjoyable to something bordering on a bunch of poster’s that aren’t sure what to say so let me say anything – even if it is pointless.
Come on people – up the standards. Analyze game tape, play selection, personnel moves, offensive and defensive packages…let us know some of the fun and crazy stuff you see at the games.
Many of you guys are killing the site .. you are just posting to post, kinda like the guy on the cell phone behind home plate when they know the TV camera is on them and they are calling all their friends to say “look at me”.
Know this board can do better!!

The possibility of an 8 game losing streak isn’t an enjoyable topic. That’s pretty much a given. Do you have anything constructive to add to this non-enjoyable topic?

I'm gonna quote Jeff Duncan's tweet from this morning,
“Only Saints fans could be 8-0 for first time ever & still angst-ridden. "
Personally I will enjoy the ride as best I can whatever happens. In the end, 8-8 or 3 consecutive superbowls and everything in between, it’s just a game.
So far, it’s pretty easy to enjoy.

This is like the post you expect to be reading mid-season
1) That’s a stupid question. But no, for the record.
2) Not because of anything the Saints do, but I wouldn’t rule anything out as impossible.
3) Sure. What would be the difference, really? The Saints have sucked a lot over the years.
4) Probably not. He’s done a great job this year. He’d have to really screw the pooch to deserve the can after the first half of this season.
5) Does that have anything to do with the burial ground beneath the dome? Because that’s what’s been causing all the Saints’ woes, and that alone.
6) Never did to begin with.
7) Not Applicable. If I lived in the area, I’d love a crack at a season ticket, though.
8) No. I think that would be giving an absurd amount of credit to the coaches. If the takeaways suddenly came to a grinding halt, I’d figure other teams figured out GW’s scheme, end of story. The stats on the defense give an accurate depiction of that squad in my mind. Mediocre defense, but ballhawks, and a solid secondary.
9) I don’t understand the question. What do I want in the draft or FA? OLB’s, and O-line, and a real young qb prospect. But I’m invested, whatever the outcome, so I don’t see there being any need for a “deal” with the franchise. If they drafted two new WR’s, another CB, and a highly touted longsnapper, I’d complain, but I’d still watch. I guess, uh, no black pants.
10) 4, possibly, but he’d have to call some really terrible games.

A disingenous post...
The real point of this thread is not to gain insights into what emotional impacts a season collapse would produce on its fanbase, but instead throw cold water on fans that are rightfully proud, upbeat and positive about their team and its future.
Pizza, why not just troll on the Redskins and Packers boards for a while? You’ll get a really good feel as to what abject disappointment and dashed expectations feel like.
by TigerPaw on Nov 10, 2009 1:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Does that mean the real point of threads that discuss the possibility of the Saints going undefeated, is to throw hot water on fans who have seen both the good and the bad and readily admit that both can just as easily manifest themselves?

1.) Would you continue to be a Saints fan?
I’ll still follow them, but I’ll likely be moving out of state sometime next year regardless, so I’ll have a new local team to support and/or call my favorite. To be perfectly honest, the only reason I haven’t relocated yet is because I had already purchased season tickets and I want to be around to see how this whole thing plays out. It’s pretty much a one shot deal for me, no matter what.
2.) Would you entertain suicidal thoughts?
Not even if they went 0-16.
3.) Could you handle the ridicule such an epic choke job would inevitably spawn?
I lived through the 1980 season. I’m pretty sure I’m immune to ridicule.
4.) Should Sean Payton be fired?
Tough call. I think he would be, if only to regenerate interest among what remained of the fan base. Whether he’d deserve it or not would depend on how it played out.
5.) Would you begin to believe in Marie Laveau’s curse?
Yes. I don’t now, but I definitely would.
6.) Could you ever again approach a new football season with unbridled optimism?
I never do.
7.) If you’re a season ticket holder, would you renew? If you’re not, would you take advantage of the cancellations, in order to get your foot in the door?
No. If for whatever reason I continued to live in New Orleans, then yes.
8.) Would you attempt to rationalize the 8-0 start, by considering that "maybe we just weren’t that good all along"?
Yes. More along the lines of opponent’s strength, though. I’m iffy on how good they are from a personnel perspective to begin with.
9.) What changes (if any) would you want to see made, before investing yourself in the team again?
Franchise LT, a C, two or three new OLBs, a relatively young backup QB with NFL experience, a flatout bruiser of a RB. New open air stadium, outside of the bowl.
10.) Which (if any) of your answers to the above questions would depend on the circumstances surrounding the collapse? In other words, would a season-ending injury to Brees in the Rams game (for example), somehow lessen the humiliation in hindsight? And to what extent?

next time you fire up a post titled, “Unthinkable!”, follow it with a narrative on the season, a quote from a Saints player, a string of questions…AND then tell people they shouldn’t comment, do everyone a favor – fire up your own blog.
oh, and make sure to have lots of pictures of abandoned Detroit, North Korea, stormy skies and the Ft. Hood memorial on infinite loop.

This will end right now
You have the right to blindly follow the Saints with unbridled optimism just as CP has the right to question any and all possibilities for the rest of the season.
What did Darren Sharper say the other day…
“The only thing this win today guarantees us is 8-8. That’s all.”
If you’re too immature to think about reality, that’s fine. You don’t have to. But personally attacking him just pisses me off. Especially after he anticipated possible reaction and asked nicely for those to bite their tongues. Does CP tell you that you’re being too optimistic? No. So leave him the hell alone This is my blog and whether you believe it or not, I like to examine the team from every…single…angle. You might not like that. Deal with it.

I think the responses are due to all the condescending and crazy remarks CP has made himself. Pent up frustration coming out. There’s no way this isn’t going to happen on a forum, I’ve learned. However, this blog is waaay better than some of the stuff you see on Nola.com, sportsline or Saints report.

hey
Look, I get it. I understand that CP rubs people the wrong way. Sometimes I think he’s crazy. But I don’t think CP makes condescending remarks or attacks anyone personally unless the same is done to him.
CP is the most objective motherpucker on this site. More so than the journalists. I think some people have a hard time dealing with his objectivity. He said it himself…
You should know me by now. If there’s a flipside to anything, I’m going there.
But you all just have to deal with it. That’s why CSC is awesome; we’ve got every kind of person represented here.
CP is just as big a fan of the Saints as anyone else here (He’s got a freaking hotel reservation for the Super Bowl for crying out loud) so just let him be a fan in whatever way he likes. When anyone attacks him, they’re sinking to a level lower than they accuse CP of being on.
As for this…
this blog is waaay better than some of the stuff you see on Nola.com, sportsline or Saints report.
Thank you, I appreciate it. The only way we’re going to stay that way is if people check their ego’s at the door (homepage?), stop using profane language (I know I did earlier but I was pissed), being negative on a personal level and realize we all love the Saints.

I will say however, that merely picking the right end of the stick becuz everyone chooses left or vice versa isn’t objective. Not that objectivity is expected all the time on a blog geared to a specific team. I agree and admit that people do throw a lil’ heat his way, however I wouldn’t say that it’s been thrown his way unwarranted. With that said, respect is respect and I hear ya.

We’ve said it quite a few times over at the Phinsider, but wanted to say thank you for having some top notch fans. Classy, respectful, and its been nothing but a joy to speak, debate, and discuss our upcoming game with you guys.
If you want a comparison, think back to the idiot Jets and Eagles fans that came over here. Is that how you want to be viewed? That is CERTAINLY not how I want my blog to be viewed and when any of you guys get compliments like the ones above, I take that personally and with pride.

Dave, Darren was right, the only thing this start guarantees is 8-8. That is true. We aren’t guaranteed anything beyond that.
But calling thinking the idea of going 8-8 after this start utterly insane, moronic, and wacko is not in any way shape or form “immature”. It’s theoretically possible on about the same level of probability of a member of one political party using five words or less and converting their most die-hard opposite number to a true-believing brother-in-arms. But realistic? In no way, shape, or form. So it’s not in any way immature to call the idea moronic.
Attacking CP on a personal level, yeah, that’s moronic. Attacking his post or idea, however, not remotely. And especially not attacking the idea of trying to limit people’s responses. He has no more right to tell people they can’t respond than they have to tell him he can’t post.
by FriarBob on Nov 10, 2009 9:26 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Absolutely
your final point is correct. I’ve already acknowledged that fact. You can disagree with his post or idea (I think attack is harsh), regardless of whether he tells anyone not to.

I'm in...
…nothing wrong with a dose of potential (bad) reality:
1.) Would you continue to be a Saints fan? When you cut me, I bleed black and gold.
2.) Would you entertain suicidal thoughts? Never, under any circumstance would I contemplate such a stupid thing. (If losing the love of my life in divorce TWICE hasn’t done it, nothing the Saints can do will)
3.) Could you handle the ridicule such an epic choke job would inevitably spawn? See the answer to #1 – additionally, I’m a Cubs fan.
4.) Should Sean Payton be fired? Impossible to say without all the circumstances being considered, and as the situation has not occured, unanswerable. Probably not.
5.) Would you begin to believe in Marie Laveau’s curse? No. See my signature, applies to ALL supernatural belief. :-)
6.) Could you ever again approach a new football season with unbridled optimism? Always, tomorrow is a new day – see comments about divorces from women I wanted to die in the presence of. :-)
7.) If you’re a season ticket holder, would you renew? If you’re not, would you take advantage of the cancellations, in order to get your foot in the door? I wish I were a season ticket holder, but living in NC that would be irrational. IF I were, no, I would keep them, if I lived there and weren’t, and was financially able to, yes, I would get them.
8.) Would you attempt to rationalize the 8-0 start, by considering that “maybe we just weren’t that good all along”? See answer #4 – unanswerable. WHY did it happen? Hypothetically too many causes exist, injury, poor play, etc.
9.) What changes (if any) would you want to see made, before investing yourself in the team again? Do they address the issues? With the present management, I think they would at least make an attempt to do so, so unless they totally screwed the pooch after totally screwing the pooch, I’m there. Again, cut me, I bleed black & gold.
10.) Which (if any) of your answers to the above questions would depend on the circumstances surrounding the collapse? In other words, would a season-ending injury to Brees in the Rams game (for example), somehow lessen the humiliation in hindsight? And to what extent? Of course, extenuating circumstances will count in my reaction, but not in my being a fan of the team. I will be disappointed, angry, disgusted, but whatever adjective you choose, it will go in front of “Saints fan”, as in “I am a very ****** Saints fan.”

1) I have a job that I can’t wait to get to in the morning and don’t want to leave a night.
2) I have a girlfriend that tolerates my multiple addictions to football and all things bass guitar related – not only tolerates, but encourages and participates in, she’s become a Saints fan!
3) The Saints are 8-0.

Fair question...
…since I mentioned it, it’s open season, right? ;-)
Two different women (I stopped dating “chicks” when I left Salmen High School).
First one, truly was the love of my life, and while I’ve come to terms with losing her, it still sits on my mind every day. I’ve moved on, but there is a small “part” of who I am that mourns that loss and always will.
Second one was a “love at first sight” issue…then I met her children, especially her now 20 year old son that has cerebral palsy, and fell MADLY in love with them. I thought THAT love was enough to deal with the insanity in the love (which did exist) between she and I. It wasn’t. Very sad, but for a different reason, since she has made it a point to cause it to be impossible for me to see my (and I see him as my) son.
Answered? :-)
(For the record, as I posted above, I’m a genuinely happy guy.)

Nothing unique there, bro. I think when you get to be our age, there’s probably something amiss, if you HAVEN’T experienced heartbreak. At least, at some level. It’s just a crappy part of life. Sorry you had to deal with it on such a large scale twice. How’s that saying go? Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.

Precisely:
Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.
Life is far too short to look back and wonder “what if”, it’s much better to look forward and say the same thing, right?
We get one sure chance at this, I wasted 2+ years at the first divorce, trying to “convince her she was wrong”, learned a very costly (not financially, but in real life) lesson from that, and now, just getting on with it.
The Saints being 8-0 helps. ;-)

It does help. And I agree that spending an inordinate amount of time worrying about the past accomplishes nothing. But I do like to wonder “what if” on both sides of the coin (positive and negative), when it comes to the future. And even the past sometimes. I’ve seen some pretty interesting movies on the very subject. From a personal standpoint, I find the best decisions are usually made whenever you consider all the possibilities.
In terms of this exercise, I already know what the ill-effects of a season turned sour are, in terms of an online community. Interest dissipates quickly. As a Saints fan, I’ve experienced it as recently as 2005. Trust me, places like this become a ghost town. That’s the main reason I wanted to see the flipside to all of this now. Because IF it were to happen, most of you would no longer be around to express why, what you were feeling, etc. A captive audience > no audience. That and I knew no one else was going to cover the angle, if I didn’t. So, there you go.

I agree and disagree with the decision-making point you made.
While I can attest to occasions calling for putting much thought and logic into a decision, some of my best choices in life have been based on gut as opposed to logic.
One such animal was involving my ex-wife and whether I should try to work things out or not, which all intelligence and logic pointed to, while my gut said otherwise. I went with my gut and long story short, I’m happier than I’ve ever been with an amazing woman and son. Looking back now, the times I had with my ex, I was never completely happy or satisfied, but that’s because I didn’t know what happy or satisfied looked like.
Hindsight truly is 20/20. Oh well, you either live for the moment, or you die from its loss.

Well, we're WAY off topic now...
…but my only advice is this:
Never EVER take it (that marriage you care for) for granted. That is the death of it.
If you assume it will always be there, it WON’T BE. Never ass/u/me anything about any relationship with anyone, always treat it as if it is a rare and difficult to keep alive orchid – feed, water, and tend to it daily.
Don’t fear anything, just treat it as if it were the most important thing in your life (well, after watching the Saints win Super Bowl 44! See, I got us back on topic there…), the thing that makes you most happy, and it will always do that.
I lost wife #1 because I spread myself too thin, gave too much of my attention and efforts to things that were not as important to me, and by the time I understood that, it was too late.
Keep that marriage #1, and you’ll be fine Tay.
Peace.

1.) Would you continue to be a Saints fan? I have spent too much money to change now but even i wouldn’t have, i’d still be a fan ;D
2.) Would you entertain suicidal thoughts? Only if the Colts won the SB b/c I’d never hear the end of it from my fiance. If I say something about the Colts, she says “Who’s won a SB?” lol
3.) Could you handle the ridicule such an epic choke job would inevitably spawn? I’ve had worse
4.) Should Sean Payton be fired? It depends but probably not
5.) Would you begin to believe in Marie Laveau’s curse? Idk about the curse really unless it’s about us being built on a graveyard and even if i heard it, i wouldn’t believe it.
6.) Could you ever again approach a new football season with unbridled optimism? Is there any other way to approach a season? lol not for me, there isn’t
7.) If you’re a season ticket holder, would you renew? If you’re not, would you take advantage of the cancellations, in order to get your foot in the door? If I lived in Hattiesburg still, I’d definetly be all over that.
8.) Would you attempt to rationalize the 8-0 start, by considering that “maybe we just weren’t that good all along”? No, I think we’re better than we’re actually playing now.
9.) What changes (if any) would you want to see made, before investing yourself in the team again? I’d invest again but it depends on why we collapsed to know what I would want done. If the team just got devestated by injuries(i think it’d take more than just Brees) then just added depth but if we just played terrible games, then I dont’ think it’d take any changes really.
10.) Which (if any) of your answers to the above questions would depend on the circumstances surrounding the collapse? In other words, would a season-ending injury to Brees in the Rams game (for example), somehow lessen the humiliation in hindsight? And to what extent? #2, as stated. #4 possibly but not probable. #7, also as stated but depending on my cash flow. #9 but not that much i think

Dave, I think your response is out of line
CP constantly tries to just piss everyone off, condescend, get nasty, belittle individuals, and otherwise bring huge negativity to this website. The list of individiuals that get angry at him for snied comments is quite long. He relentlessy bashed certain Saints and constantly minimizes the talents of a lot of the players on the team such as linebackers, reserves, safeties, running backs. He is one of the few people who post that drags this website down. And then he goes and stirs up controversy and we react and you admonish us. We’re all wrong?? We’re all the ones looking to bring negativity here? Take a look at the history and then decide which poster is constantly making us think we are on the wrong site and it would be more fun elsewhere.

I apologize for my response but I find this discourse (since the summer) to be tired and ridiculous. It honestly makes me not want to do any of this anymore.
CP constantly tries to just piss everyone off, condescend, get nasty, belittle individuals, and otherwise bring huge negativity to this website.
I don’t agree with this. He doesn’t try to piss people off, he just states unpopular viewpoints. People get pissed off. You view it as negativity; I view it as reality. We laugh when we read other teams blogs and the whimsical fantasies their fans seem to have about their team. Don’t you think we look just as ridiculous to them? We love our team so much it hurts and often times fail to see a lot of it’s faults. To me, CP just doesn’t seem to get blinded by much of that. He deals much more in reality. I think a lot of us have a hard time dealing with that. Mix that in with the fact that he he’s relentless during a debate and you’ve got all the ingredients for misplaced anger.
He is one of the few people who post that drags this website down.
I guess he should take you down from the leader board in the weekly Player Pick’Em post he runs every week then. I think CP contributes more football knowledge to this site than I do.
And then he goes and stirs up controversy and we react and you admonish us. We’re all wrong??
It’s the personal attacking I admonish. I wouldn’t have even stepped in if I thought you guys had expressed your displeasure in a more positive manner. See FriarBob’s post below.

It appears to me that CP has been involved in every controversy here since the summer. I am clearly not saying that no one should disagree or dissent, but it appears to me that CP has and still does since the summer go out of his way to cause strife among posters any way he can.

If such infractions are as intentional and as blatant as you describe, then why are some people not going on and on about it … rather, simply following instructions and answering the 10 questions posed? My guess would be because it’s only SOME (as in “not all”) that are getting butthurt over something as trivial as looking at the next eight GAMES (as in “it’s just a game”) from a worst case scenario perspective.

As I’ve said before on this particular (Reggie Bush) subject, legions of Saints fans on this sight and others bashed Jason David, even after he led the team in interceptions last season. What’s the difference, other than you (and many others) seeing more good in one player than I (and many others) do? Was Jason David “not a Saint!!!!”? It’s differences of opinion based on perceived strengths and shortcomings, value to the team, etc. Nothing more, nothing less. Further, we don’t have to hold hands and sing Kumbaya to co-exist as Saints fans, so spare me the peace treaty.

5.) Would you begin to believe in Marie Laveau’s curse? Why not. I didn’t believe the “Billy Goat” curse on the Cubs until a few years back.
6.) Could you ever again approach a new football season with unbridled optimism? Probably not. At that point, Seeing is believing.
7.) If you’re a season ticket holder, would you renew? If you’re not, would you take advantage of the cancellations, in order to get your foot in the door? If I were I would and I’d definitely take advantage of some cancellations.
8.) Would you attempt to rationalize the 8-0 start, by considering that “maybe we just weren’t that good all along”? Depends but probably not. Sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way.

OK, I probably shouldn’t write this. I do like you after all. But this has literally got to be the most ridiculous list of questions I’ve ever seen written about football. And I’ve seen some insane ones.
1.) Would you continue to be a Saints fan? I stuck by a team that went 4-11-1 last year. A team that flat out sucked for about two thirds of the year and was pretty crappy much of the rest, and I’ve got no compunction about admitting it. What the hell do you think? There is absolutely ZERO chance the answer to this will ever be no. Even when I wasn’t actively following them due to college and then a bit of a delay in coming back to football at all, I was still a fan I just didn’t actively follow them. They were still my first team ever, and always will be. Even such a literally impossible choke job wouldn’t change that. I am a Saint fan for life. No ifs, no ands, and no buts. If I can’t watch because they suck so bad, then I just won’t watch for awhile and then come back later.
2.) Would you entertain suicidal thoughts? No. I love the Saints but I do actually have a life outside of football. I’d be very sad, but that’s it.
3.) Could you handle the ridicule such an epic choke job would inevitably spawn? Sure. Because my fan-hood for the team would have absolutely nothing to do with whether this insane scenario occurred or not. So anybody who tried to ridicule _me- personally would find themselves the objects of complete contempt for their sheer idiocy, and I’d tell them so in no uncertain terms. And if they tried to ridicule the team they would quickly bore of the lack of reaction.
4.) Should Sean Payton be fired? No. Because there is no realistic chance this happens in the first place. The only chance it could would be literally losing half the team to season-ending injuries in the first quarter of next week’s game. And that wouldn’t be his fault. His strength and conditioning coach, however, would be fair game.
5.) Would you begin to believe in Marie Laveau’s curse? No. I don’t even know what it is, and still don’t care. Even if you explain what it is, answer’s still no. Period. Always and forever.
6.) Could you ever again approach a new football season with unbridled optimism? Why on earth not? Just look at the Fartcons of last year, an absolutely horrible 3-13 team in utter chaos and disarray the previous year went 11-5 and would have won the division if we’d held up our end of the bargain. Or the Bengals of last year and this year. Or any of a dozen other scenarios where a team does good one year and not the next… or vice versa. The only thing that can keep your team from having a chance any year is an idiot in the owners box, the GM slot, or a key coaching position.
7.) If you’re a season ticket holder, would you renew? If you’re not, would you take advantage of the cancellations, in order to get your foot in the door? I live in Ohio. But if I could afford the plane tickets every week, I’d probably get them even then.
8.) Would you attempt to rationalize the 8-0 start, by considering that “maybe we just weren’t that good all along”? Hell no. We are that good. Period. No ifs, no ands, no buts. We beat some very good teams in a fashion that can ONLY happen if you are better. And we were. If by some insane twist of fate we suddenly become that horrible, then fine, we’ll be that horrible. But we’ll only be that horrible then. And right now, we aren’t, and won’t have been. Nothing that happens after this point can reduce the fact that we were, up to this point, the best team in the league bar none. We just won’t be anymore.
9.) What changes (if any) would you want to see made, before investing yourself in the team again? None. Because I wouldn’t have become uninvested in the first place.
10.) Which (if any) of your answers to the above questions would depend on the circumstances surrounding the collapse? In other words, would a season-ending injury to Brees in the Rams game (for example), somehow lessen the humiliation in hindsight? And to what extent? None, none, and none.

1.) Would you continue to be a Saints fan?
Hell yeah, I’m a glutton for punishment. The Saints are a part of who I am and where I come from. I’ve moved all over the place, and I’m still a fan.
2.) Would you entertain suicidal thoughts?
More like homicidal
3.) Could you handle the ridicule such an epic choke job would inevitably spawn?
I’ve been a Saints fan my whole life, isn’t that ridicule enough?
4.) Should Sean Payton be fired?
No, he’s done great things with the organization, but he would have to reliquish play-call duties.
5.) Would you begin to believe in Marie Laveau’s curse?
I already do.
6.) Could you ever again approach a new football season with unbridled optimism?
I’m optimistic by nature, but oddly enough, the more they win, the less optimistic I am. It’s really strange, but I think I’m looking for the let down.
7.) If you’re a season ticket holder, would you renew? If you’re not, would you take advantage of the cancellations, in order to get your foot in the door?
I WOULD KILL FOR SOME TICKETS!
8.) Would you attempt to rationalize the 8-0 start, by considering that “maybe we just weren’t that good all along”?
I’d attribute it to something else. We’re obviously that good, something would’ve shifted to cause that kind of collapse.
9.) What changes (if any) would you want to see made, before investing yourself in the team again? I wouldn’t need any changes. I’ll still be there rooting every Sunday, star or suck.
10.) Which (if any) of your answers to the above questions would depend on the circumstances surrounding the collapse? In other words, would a season-ending injury to Brees in the Rams game (for example), somehow lessen the humiliation in hindsight? And to what extent?
I think it’s bad to even mention Brees and the “I” word in the same sentence . . . EVER.

It’s not a preferential thing … I do like it cold, but I’ll eat leftover pizza both ways. I’ve actually had this screen name since 1996 … well before the ESPN show was around. It originates from my college days at UL-Lafayette (USL at the time). I lived on campus and the room & board package included three meals M-F in the adjacent dining hall. On the weekends, you were pretty much on your own. On Saturday nights, I would often go to a nearby pizza buffet place and pig out, then stack as many “to-go” slicess as I could possibly fit on a plate and sneak on out the door. Back at the dorm, I had one of those little cubicle fridges — used primarily for beer and soft drinks — but no microwave. Whenever the Saints played a road game the next day, I would chill out in my bed … watching the game … and eating cold pizza. Just a simpler time in my life that I like to reflect back on from time to time. So, I chose the name for Excite Virtual Places and it just sort of stuck. I will say though, that if you close your eyes, you can easily distinguish every single ingredient on a slice of cold pizza much more easily than you can on a hot slice. Warm cheese tends to dominate the taste buds. Not sure why.

I appreciate the input from everyone who’s given it. Whether you agree or not, I find staring down the barrel of worst possible scenarios cathartic, in a sense. Not that this is even the worst possible scenario … coughwearemarshallcough … but you get the picture. At the beginning of the season, I predicted the Saints would finish 9-7, simply because they’ve been flirting with mediocrity from a talent standpoint since the Dick Nolan era. Even as recently as last season, their W-L pattern resembled a sewing machine stitch: WLLWLWLWLWLWWLWL. Be honest. If that was a heart monitor attached to your loved one, you’d walk out of the hospital room to grab lunch, thinking everything was business as usual. Never in my wildest dreams did I think a worst possible scenario halfway through 2009 would look like: WWWWWWWWLLLLLLLL. The mere fact that they’re two victories away from exceeding my expectations makes me happy. If they wind up doing even better than that … and at this point, it appears that they will … then more power to them. Hell, even a meet-me-halfway WLWLWLWL jigsaw job from here on out leaves them at a franchise best 12-4. Actually 12-3 in 1987 was their best winning percentage, but I won’t quibble on that, due to the scab games involved. In any case, it’s refreshing to know that there are a few people mature enough to get past the tantrums of a Utopian society and stare down the potential evil that COULD (but in all likelihood isn’t) lurking just over that hill. In answering these 10 questions, you now have nothing to fear. Aside from it all coming true [Crypt Keeper laugh]. Jk. As you were.

My 2 Cents (about what it's worth!)
1.) Would you continue to be a Saints fan? Sure, always have been!
2.) Would you entertain suicidal thoughts? No way!
3.) Could you handle the ridicule such an epic choke job would inevitably spawn? I’ve been a fan since the beginning, and I haven’t lived in New Orleans since 2000. What do you think?
4.) Should Sean Payton be fired? Depends on circumstances, but probably not
5.) Would you begin to believe in Marie Laveau’s curse? No. Attributing bad luck to a curse or something beyond control just creates a vicious cycle.
6.) Could you ever again approach a new football season with unbridled optimism? Unbridled? I don’t think I ever have. Optimism…yes! Unbridled? No.
7.) If you’re a season ticket holder, would you renew? If you’re not, would you take advantage of the cancellations, in order to get your foot in the door? Since I’m out of town, that not an option. If I were able, I certainly would.
8.) Would you attempt to rationalize the 8-0 start, by considering that “maybe we just weren’t that good all along”? Again, depends on the circumstances. Like many long-time fans, it’s already hard to believe that they ARE that good!
9.) What changes (if any) would you want to see made, before investing yourself in the team again? Umm, maybe some help along the offensive & defensive lines, but it wouldn’t be a requirement. They’d still be my hometown team, and I’d still follow and cheer for them. I’ll be in the stands in Washington in a few weeks!
10.) Which (if any) of your answers to the above questions would depend on the circumstances surrounding the collapse? In other words, would a season-ending injury to Brees in the Rams game (for example), somehow lessen the humiliation in hindsight? And to what extent? Probably number 4 and that’s about it. Thanks for your thought-provoking post coldpizza. And thanks for the awesome job you do with the blog Dave!

Coldpizza needs to change his name to wetblanket
Honestly, I wonder if this guy is really a Saints fan sometimes with his comments. He is always negative and I make this bold prediction with two Tampa games, one St. Louis and Washington let on the schedule, the Saints will win at least 12 games with anyone, including me, a 60 year old fat man, at quarterback.

8-8
1.) Would you continue to be a Saints fan?
YES
2.) Would you entertain suicidal thoughts?
Its football, it aint worth anybody’s life.
3.) Could you handle the ridicule such an epic choke job would inevitably spawn?
LOL, we are Saints fans that has happend to me every year since 1987.
4.) Should Sean Payton be fired?
If his coaching is the CAUSE or significantly adds to the collapse then… YES.
5.) Would you begin to believe in Marie Laveau’s curse?
Forgive my ignorance, but i dont know who she is or what her “curse” is all about.
6.) Could you ever again approach a new football season with unbridled optimism?
LOL. We are Sainst fans! “unbridled” is harldy how i’d characterize any feelings of “optimism” i ve had for the start of any season.
7.) If you’re a season ticket holder, would you renew? If you’re not, would you take advantage of the cancellations, in order to get your foot in the door?
Unfortunately, I’m a Saints fan that lives in 49er country and being of limited means season tickets are out of my tax bracket. However, i would renew my NFL package and still watch Saints games.
8.) Would you attempt to rationalize the 8-0 start, by considering that “maybe we just weren’t that good all along”?
Rationalizing is for losers. To quote a movie “Do or do not, there is no try.”
9.) What changes (if any) would you want to see made, before investing yourself in the team again?
Depends on why we lost. None really, just the start of a new season.
10.) Which (if any) of your answers to the above questions would depend on the circumstances surrounding the collapse? In other words, would a season-ending injury to Brees in the Rams game (for example), somehow lessen the humiliation in hindsight? And to what extent?
Numero 9. Frankly, if Brees died in a car wreck on his way to the game the Saints are a better team than the Rams and Bucs ( who we play twice) and probably the Panthers. 10-12 wins would still be in our graspe. Any collapse i’d just have to see to believe. The only thing that would would ameliorate the humiliation is another team collapsing just as badly or worse than this team. I’m still suffering from images of Mutombo clutching the ball at the free throw line in Seattle after game 7 of the 1994 NBA Playoffs. The one thing make me feel better…in 2007, the 8th seeded Golden State Warriors defeated the #1 seed Dallas Mavericks in 6 GAMES. NOTE: Dallas did not suffer any injuires, just got there but kicked and out were altogther out-coached.

Frankly, I'm surprised at you, CP.
Were you drinking when you wrote this? None of this sheeyat is gonna happen. Did you forget to refill your Zoloft?
You’re talking to Saints fans here. Half of us have ‘just wait til next year’ tattooed on our ass.

I hear where you’re coming from … 8-8 isn’t anything new. But 8-0 inclines, followed by 0-8 declines would be uncharted territory for any NFL team. That’s more than be said of 16-0 inclines, right? That being said, I figured why not get a read on what it would be like, being that we were/are in a position for it to conceivably happen. If we were 7-1 right now, the extreme peak/valley doesn’t exist and it isn’t worth talking about. Just taking advantage of the rare situation, my good man.

Put it this way … if we were 0-8 right now, and I was talking about finishing 8-8 … it would be just as unrealistic, with the same end result … but no one would be bitching about negativity. In fact, I’d venture to guess you’d probably have less than half the people you do right now participating on these boards (just as we did this past offseason), so negativity would have already manifested itself in the form of apathy.
