There has been a lot of talk about problems.
First, let's remember we are undefeated are playing Tampa Bay next. It is really hard to reason to complain when you are unbeaten, but we seem to be a good job of it. You have to understand that the Saints are now the number target in the NFC. For teams like the Rams, this is the closest they are going to get to the Superbowl. I remember when the Saints were a sad team and they would give their best performances against the top teams. Let us examine the games in question:
1. Miami, they were coming off a bye week and needed a win to reach .500. We were playing on the road. In the NFL it is always tough to win on the road. They were on a two game winning streak and needed to win to get back in the division race. The Saints were coming off a big win in trouncing the Giants. It was the perfect setup for a letdown and think it showed in the first half. However in the second half, the Saints made two adjustments that changed it all. They showed the world how to stop the Wildcat and secondly they started going down the middle to Shockey.
2. The Falcons, they were coming off a disappointing loss and were two games in back of the Saints and were desperate for a win in order to get one game back. A loss meant they would be essential 3.5 games in back due to tie breakers. Without Fujita and Ellis to stop the run, the Saints were undermanned against a good rushing team. The only reason the Falcons got back into the game in the 4th quarters were some miscues by the special teams.
3. Carolina, another team that was on a two game winning streak. A win made them .500. Remember they were almost everyone's preseason pick to win the division. Additionally the defense was still weak in the middle due to injuries. A loss meant the end of their hopes for a division title.
4.The Rams, this was their Superbowl. They had just had their first win and needed to keep up the momentum. They had had their bye week and had two games to get ready for the Saints.
All things consider, the Saints did what good teams have to do in these situations, find a way to win. I really think we have been condition with so much disappointment with past teams that we are waiting for the other shoe to drop and for the Saints to let us down once again. I really don't see that happening with this team.

Green Bay and Miami
both thought they were going to roll over the Bucs Green Bay paid for their mistake and Miami (after their fans all predicted a huge blowout) barely got away with a win. Will the Saints also make the mistake of taking this team too lightly?

Nope.
It’s a tale of quarterbacks. You’ve got a young one back there, that has been playing well. You can best believe he’s going to be pressured early and often. The only person in Tampa that has me nervous is Cadillac, and we’ve already shown that 150+ yards rushing doesn’t mean squat in beating the Saints. The game will not be close.

A Complete Game
Ajun,
Your quickly becoming on of my fav fellow saints fans. This post makes great sense. AsI said in your other one , we need to stop saying 16-0 and start saying 10-0. This week lets hope not only for another win but a complete game. Limit the mistakes, not too much style, just a good solid performance. And dont worry about New England untill we finish off Tampa Bay. The road to the top is one game at a time.

Tampa is another trap game
If they catch us looking ahead to New England, they could beat us. This is their chance to shine. They can be ones to drop an unbeaten team. It might even save Gruden’s job. He’s in trouble in Tampa and his players like him. They know this and will play hard to save him. The game is road game and any road game is tough. This team is not experienced, except for a couple of individual players with the pressure of success. This is the perfect trap game. I hope the Saints don’t fall for it.

I just did a "what if" poll
on BUC EM, about coach Morris and Bill Cowher you might be surprised how many people support him keeping his job.

NOT if
he goes 1 – 15, when they thought they had a shot at winning the division at the beginning of the season. The fans in Tampa do realize they are mathematically eliminated from winning the division…right?

I cant speak for anybody else
but i thought 6-10 or 5-11 was realistic, hardly a division winner!

I Respectfully Disagree
AC,
All things considered, you bring up some very salient points, however, I respectfully disagree for several reasons:
1 – Our philosophys must be consistent. Both Sean Payton as Well as Greg Williams has stated on several occasions when asked about preparation for other teams that they are less (“not”) concerned about what other teams do, but what we need to do. So the points about the circumstances surrounding each team we’ve played & how they calculate into an unexpected, less than stellar outcome for an ELITE team, becomes somewhat irrelevant (again from a consistent philosophical standpoint).
2 – Both Sean Payton and Drew Brees have both touted the defense for picking up the slack in the past 240 minutes of play. I’m a big believer in defense, but my problem is, the offense is not showing up to play against teams that are not on their level. Either our offense is NOT what we are making it out to be OR we are not showing up on the job which leaves the defense no choice. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for balance, but my point is the offense is NOT doing the job I know it can do. I’m not seeing an aggressive offense here, and yes I understand perfectly we cannot expect to do against Miami what we did against Oakland (??) at the beginning of the season.
Bottom line: Sean Payton needs to stop sounding complacent about getting the “W” despite mistakes and start sounding a bit more resolved about correcting the mistakes. We have exposed our weaknesses at the worst part of the season – the time when other teams are getting better and have had 240 minutes of tape to figure out how to beat us.

That is so much bull hockey.
If their philosophy never changes, then there would be no half time adjustments, which there have clearly been. Additionally, I’m talking about how the Saints prepare, I’m talking about other team’s preparation. You seem to think that every that goes wrong is a Saint mistake and not something the other team is doing right. Bill Walsh once said, “A game plan goes out the window after the ref blows his whistle.”
This is from a man, who invented scripting the first 25 plays of a game. He knew that you can plan all you want, but that you had to adapt sometimes to how the other guy planned. In the first half of the Miami game, the Saints were getting beat at the corners, because Miami was sealing the ends. In the second half, the Saints started blitzing the corners everytime they lined up in the Wildcat. That’s adjusting to the other team.
Good teams have to adjust or the other team who has several hours of film on you will scheme you to death. As to exposing our weaknesses, EVERY team has weaknesses and they are all exposed by the third game.
You guys do know that there are two teams preparing for these games and they both want to win. They will do some things right, even if we do nothing wrong. I am not Polyanna and saying we are playing our best football. We are not, but how can you be playing your best football, when you don’t have your best players on the field.
It is ludicris to think that the injuries that have been hitting us has not affected our defense. Our offense is not getting many short fields. Do you know who leads the league in drives of over 70 yards….The Saints.
I hate to be picky, but we didn’t play Oakland. However, that is irrelevent to my argument. I say we have several injuries and are going to have to live with some subpar performance until some of them comeback. Finally, if you don’t mind I will take any win under any circumstances, no matter how ugly it is.

Ajun I agree with you
and I would rather win a Super Bowl with the flat out ugliest performance ever than lose with all the pretty stats and highlights. But, what’s more is, as you say, we are taking everyone’s best shot with a patchwork defensive secondary and our 2 best runstoppers not in the game. The only thing I really would like to see is GW make the changes on defense that he has been making at halftime a little earlier like in the 2nd qtr. I also think Pressley should start (or come in earlier) and Jenkins should get more time, and I am thinking that will happen this game.

When putting up 28 points in a game is considered a slow day, I’d say your team is having a damn good season. The Rams game was the closest game of the season, and they had to throw a hail mary to have a shot at winning. There are 30 other teams in the league that wish they could be in the position the Saints are. They’re just fine, and the only reason for the close games is that there’s a HUGE star next to the Saints on every team’s schedule that we play from here on out. Let’s face it, we’re everyone’s Superbowl this year.

AGREE
I think we are so used to losing the close games and after our convincing wins in week 1 – 4 the last games where we the other team has been ‘in the game’ even though we won we thing there is something wrong! Well sure I would rather see us get back to the way we were playing in the first 4 games BUT…… we are winning the games every other year we would have LOST! I guess the “Wait till next year” mentality and the Monday mornings of how did we blow that have gotten to be a habit…. the team is breaking so many of it’s old habits and patterns… we need to get coached up on how to handle all this success, I mean would we be happy if we had lost those last 4 games… NO so maybe we do need some coaching in how to handle success, even when it’s not some convincing blowout!
Saintsational, you teach any classes like, “How To Root For A Winning Team” ? We are short on experience but long on willingness to learn…lol
