Sean Payton Approval Rating
This was something I wanted to do last week at the halfway mark of the season but never got around to it. I thought it would be interesting to take the temperature of fan sentiment regarding head coach Sean Payton and try to get a quantifiable answer as to how fans feel he is doing in his job as head coach this season.
Personally, Payton gets an "A" from me. Pretty hard to find fault with the coach of a 9-0 football team. In fact, my initial hesitation with writing this post was that I thought his excellent work this season was too obvious and evident and that it would just be a waste of time.
But just for funsies, let's do it anyway! Cast your vote below and grade Payton's performance so far. Of course, your greater take on the subject can be expressed below in the comment section.

I give hime A+
Every move he made this offseason has been gold(coaches and free agents along with draft picks have been great can’t help two of them got hurt during camp)
Ive seen alot of play calling in my time and we probly right up there on off plays called
so out of 600 plays he scewed up about 10 of them thats pretty good in my book.
plus he’s starting to honer old Saints players and getting them the respect they deserve
along with his own off feild contributions are great and he expects everone on the team (especialy vetrans) to contribute also
and he’s got a great personalty that you want in a coach aggresive but not full of himself(all the time)
Exactly!
That’s the only reason he will get the A- in my book. Everything else, thus far, has been A or A+. I do have a problem with some of the conservative play calling in the latter part of games, but that’s the safe route in order to secure the win. I understand that but would rather see the offense continue to push the pedal and squash the opponent’s throats. Just IMO.
GEAUX S88S!! Konichiwa!!
I would have given an A+, but...
This may seem petty, but I would grade him an A+ if it weren’t for the occasional decision to go with those ugly ass black on black uniforms. It looks like something Jerry Glanville would do. Our traditional black with gold jerseys is possibly the best looking in the NFL so why would you want to change it???
You have to admit that the black on black, other than trim color and logo, looks frightfully similar to the uniforms that Jerry put the dirty birds in during his reign as coach. Rather than the fact they are just plain ugly, that may be the real reason I dislike them so much.
No, keep it coming, Drew-Dat
I’ve been fighting my own lonely battle against the black-on-black leotard ensemble. Makes them look like they belong on “So You Think You Can Dance,” instead of on the gridiron.
If bringing up Jerry Glanville can help change hearts and minds, I’ll make him my avatar.

I used to be a big fan of the black on black unis.
That was last year. This year I despise them. Somebody needs to gather them up and burn them in a dumpster somewhere.
Forget the nickel and dime, you'd better bring a half- dollar to deal with this team.--Tony Moss, NFL editor

He's been
He’s been stellar …
and really …
I think the overall team performance as of late is the only reason I don’t give him an A+ and I think he would agree, there is always room for improvement.
You have to be happy with so much about the Saints.
From the team …
to the coach …
to the GM/Ownership.
(gotta love the proactive Mcalister pickup)
Everyone seems to be on the same page and taking the necessary steps to get to the game of games!!!
I think our tough stretch and the challenges we have faced are a result of 2 things primarily;
1) The opposition teams are super hungry and want a chance to beat the undefeated and as such, they bring their “A” game to the field each and every week.
2) The injuries to some of our key players, specifically on defense where we probably notice the loss of personel more simply because we’ve gone so long without a D that could take some of the heat off of our offense!!
It’s a fact ….
every great team of the past …
every team period, endures time of challenge that eb and flow.
Ups and downs …
they happen in life and in sport!!!
I’m so excited and love how our Saints have won games that we jumped ahead quickly in and I love that we’ve had some comebacks ….
and I love that we’ve had a few blowouts and while I can’t say any of us enjoy the ugly wins, it is a fact of life in long and trying NFL season.
Even a pre-playoff loss would be an event, a chance ingredient in building character and providing lessons that coach Payton and the entire organization could use to bring a championship to New Orleans!!!
I gave him a B+
cause we will win the division but have struggled the last couple of game. Part of that struggle (a small part) is on Payton for game plan although the vast majority is injuries and piss poor play. That is why i gave him a B+.
Win a playoff game > goes to an A
Win the conference and go to the SuperBowl → goes to an A
Win the SuperBowl → most definetly becomes an A+++++++

if you hyphen before and after, everything in between gets striked.
so, you’re saying a playoff win is only worth an A-?

Anyone who gave him less than an A-
Shame on you. Seriously, how can you call yourself a fan?
For the 1 guy that gave him an F, you are funny. I applaud you.
A-
I give him an A because of the 9-0 mark and a – for playcalling, challenges.
His playcalling as of late has been sporatic. It seems he only runs the ball in the second half. With or without the lead. I would like to see stats of rushing attempts 1st half to 2nd. He has been getting away from bread n butter plays and hopefully he doesnt need a blast from the past double reverse to knock some sense into him.
Challenges…where do i start. He should be one of the few coaches to want replay to go away. Either that or fire the guy who is telling him to replay these things. After the play is over, he needs to call the next play and then look up to the jumbo tron so he can review it himself. Tell Drew to take the sanp if D is out of sorts if not wait till the last second to give time for Payton to challenge or not. If we are on D, and we see the Offense hurry to the ball, then we go ahead and challenge or call timeout. Then we challenge only if we are 100% on call so we do not lose 2 timeouts.
After saying my piece i am happy to have SP here and would not take any other coach right now. He has been great and will lead us to our final resting place. SB44 Geaux Saints
p.s. you are right about the black on black uni’s. U-G-L-Y
last three games
The offense has not been as dynamic as the beginning of the year but it has been better than average. Does anyone else have a feeling something is wrong with DrewB? He’s not looked as sharp, especially against theRams. If it’s not Drew then it has to be Payton’s play calling.
Bear
Hmmm, could be the . . .
Dropped passes the last few weeks? 3 or 4 by Colston, one last week by Shockey turned into an INT. Blown protection a couple times. Seems everybody is so tight and wired the first half the last 3 games. Then they relax rework the game plan for the 2nd half. ALso, we’d ahadda nother TD if Colston wasn’t trying to be Reggie at the endzone against the Rams! Betcha he won’t try THAT again!
I agree about Colston
He should never try to fly like that again. I’m just saying, dropped ball not withstanding, I would like to see Drew be a little more accurate on passes and not fumble as much as the last few games.
Bear
B+
He’s too fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants on the challenges and still relies a too heavily on the pass for tastes, especially when we have a comfortable lead. Athough, he has improved leaps and bounds in that area, since last season. He also goes for it on fourth down too often. On top of all of that, he’s a pompous ass. On the flipside, he seems to have gotten away from forcing a square peg into a round hole, as far as using Bush as a conventional RB is concerned. I also like that he’s using the TE much more often this year and not running a ridiculous amount of gadget plays. He’s playing it more conventionally and the improvement in the win column speaks volumes because of it. I’d like to see them run screen and shovel passes more often. All of our HBs excel in open space. There’s no reason why they shouldn’t be utilized more in that capacity. I’d also like to see the occasional WR screen, which is something at which the Saints have always excelled, but have inexplicably gotten away from in recent years. I like that he’s letting Gregg Williams call his own game and not getting into Gilbride-Ryan p*ssing contests. They seem to have a pretty good rapport. All in all, a great job with what he has to work with. I just think there’s room for improvement, particularly in the way of clock management and on-the-spot decision making.

“and still relies a bit too heavily on the pass for my tastes”
That first sentence was a syntax abortion.

A-
He got us Gregg Williams, and found some quality defensive backs for once, and he started off calling games really well. He’s still calling balanced, just not nearly as smart as in the first few games. He also got a 9 game win streak, and almost definitely a playoff bid. His recent return to his trademark boneheaded late-game playcalling(which would be genius if it worked, but it doesn’t), and his terrible clock management of late brings it down to a minus. If he can’t field a playoff-caliber defense in December/January, it could drop lower, just for the apparent strength and conditioning shortcomings.

like my teachers would say, there’s always room for improvement.
“A whole lot of room.” they’d usually add, shaking their heads at me.
I went A-
Some questionable calls made that could have lead to a loss, and will lead to a loss if not corrected.
Pointing to you Atlanta run plays w/injury and the timeout to make a challenge and lose another timeout in the process.
I gave him an A-
to encourage him. Don’t want him to think the job is finished and he can rest on his laurels.
And you know he reads CSC, and really cares about what we say about him. Really does. No, really.

He’s doing a fine job. The additions of Sharper, Greer, and Gregg W. (which he helped to pay for) were spot on. The drafting of Morestead, that I thought was crazy at the time, was good. The play calling, I’m not as hard on him as others. He has made a lot of references to self-scouting and he’s trying not to be predictable in certain situations. You have to admit, some of the failures have been execution and others were good defensive play. Not saying it’s been perfect, but do you think anyone else in the league could do better? I don’t think so. The double timeout/challenge play, I’m still confused (almost as much as Payton was at the time.

ok....
Who’s the dumb_sses who voted F. Come on, what about a 9-0 season so far constitutes anything less than an A.

maybe they thought "F" stands for
F&%*ing-A he’s a good coach!
I gave Payton an A. He’s led us to 9-0, our offseason moves have been a resounding success, and we are currently winning games that we have shamefully lost in past seasons. However, it’s only just after midterms and he has half a semester of coursework and a final project (playoffs/Super Bowl?) that will determine his final grade…

I thought about an A or A+ because of the 9-0 and off-season additions.
But realized even at his own press conferences he has admitted to poor time management, play calls, challenges, etc… over the last few games (ie. coaching errors). So an A or A+ would be a stretch whereas a grade of an A- or B+ seem to be much more realistic to me.
I gave him a B plus
he seems to go away from hot players last couple of weeks and seems to be holding off on killer instincs last few games and gave B plus so he does not get too high on himself if he reads these post..
hard to imagine
giving the coach of a 9-0 footballl team anything less than an A. The fact that even coldpizza gave him a B+ speaks volumes in my mind. CP giving him a B+ must have really hurt – that’s like an A+ from any of the rest of us.
I gave the A-. After the first five weeks, idiotic challenges notwithstanding, he was still an A+. But for the last few weeks we’ve struggled quite a bit and he hasn’t fixed it. And that’s the problem. Everybody has an off day. But when they keep going on and he either can’t figure out how to fix it or just hasn’t done it yet that deserves a knock.
It’s one thing to struggle against Atlanta. Or even Carolina. I may utterly despise them but they aren’t horrible teams. I wish they were, they’re division rivals after all. But they are not. And Miami is somewhat understandable.
But to struggle against St. Louis? That’s why he gets demoted. And if we struggle against TB again, he gets demoted again. Until one of the following happens he’s going to keep slipping in my mind: 1) beat a quality team, 2) blow out an inferior, or 3) play a very good game from the first snap to the last even if we lose.

Payton is key to Saints success because he is ........
Leader by example
Brilliant at game-planning and play-calling.
Great at evaluating talent and developing hidden talent. (Colston, Moore & Thomas to name a few)
Hard working, always has team well perpared. ( he’s often the first to arrive and the last to leave practice)
The best that ever was at fostering a productive Coach-QB relationship.(not only here but with the Cowboys, Giants and Eagles as well)
Totally selfless (ponied up $1/4 mil. of his own to land Greg Williams)
The epitomy of opptomism (his can-do spirit is contageous)
On top of this he coaches one hell of an exciting brand of football to watch! so I give him an A+
A-
It’s hard to argue with success, and the 9-0 record is the only reason he doesn’t get a B from me. Overall he’s doing a great job, but he has made a lot of bad calls at the end of games. Running plays instead of taking a knee to drain the clock; passing on 3rd & 2 then going for it on 4th; going for it on 4th when in field goal range; and generally letting teams stay in it by not being more aggressive and sealing a win when he has the chance.
